See this is why i usually ignore you

Because your POV is usually poorly thought-out and is better off not being analysed?

Most sports that allow draws also have mechanisms for dealing with the situation where a draw/tie occurs, but a trophy has to be handed to someone. Soccer has the penalty shoot-out, footy has the replay, cricket has various countback systems like aggregated run rate. But in all cases, the actual match result is recorded and recognised as a draw/tie. Which I think is a fair reflection of the outcome of the contest.

Not in all cases. In finals except the GF extra time is played. e.g. The 2007 SF between West Coast and Collingwood is recorded as a Collingwood 19 point win but after full time the scores were level and extra time was played.

Which is the same process followed by soccer during knockout matches. i.e. extra time counts as part of the match but if the match ends up as a draw, it's a draw.

I barely visit the board in the offseason because of the 50000 threads about AE and fantasy games that I don't have the slightest interest in. 10 sticky threads o_O

Elvis Grbac, lol.

If it is a draw after extra time then there is the penalty shootout which go for 5 kicks, after that it is sudden death until somebody misses.

Yes, but the result of the actual match is still recorded as a draw.

Do you just mean that the score is recorded as (for example) 2-2 (Liverpool won 6-5 on penalties)? Because the result is not a draw..

According to the rules, a penalty shoot-out is a tiebreaker and is not actually part of the match. It is used to decide who advances to the next stage of a knock-out competition or who wins a tournament, but the actual result of the match is recorded as a draw.

Thus the final of the 1994 World Cup was a draw, but Brazil won the tournament on penalty kicks.

I like having a draw as a result, as a side note. Just seems a strange way to word the rules!

Yeah, it's weird. It's mostly down to history.

Prior to the '70s, when the PSO was introduced, the only way to resolve a draw in a tournament situation where you needed one team to advance was replaying the match. If you were in a situation where time was a factor and you couldn't replay, they literally flipped a coin. Italy won Euro '68 after advancing past the USSR in the Semi-Finals on the basis of a coin toss, when the two teams were drawn after extra time.

The shoot-out was invented as an alternative to flipping a coin, because at least there is some element of skill involved. But because it's still basically a crapshoot, like the coin toss it was still classed as a tiebreaker that was invoked after a match was drawn - rather than being part of the match itself.

I'd love to see a tied Grand Final decided by a 75m torpedo goal contest. In fact scrap the whole game and just have that for 2 hours.

I have had one of the best weeks ever! I got my braces off, Geelong beat Hawthorn, I am ranked in the top 5000 in supercoach, it was my birthday AND I got a new job!

Have you been laid?

1 day down, 24 to go. very tired this morning. and i didn't even get till the end last night.

One advantage of living in WA, the test cricket in England finishes around 1am here. I'm still tired but not as tired as I would be if I stayed up to 3am.

Going for my p-plates today. :D
Good luck good sir.:thumbsu:
