Things That Shit Me the Eighteenth

Once, men (mainly) learnt general fixing and maintenance skills from their dads and grandfathers. Having said that, my dear late mum kept a set of tools in a cupboard and knew how to use them. She came from the do-it-yourself generation when people just couldn’t afford to pay someone to fix things or buy replacements.

People used to do real jobs because those were the jobs on offer. When my dad went to school you could either learn a trade or go to uni and become a doctor, lawyer, teacher etc. At that time it was prestigious to go to uni and have a degree and had only recently become accessible to the average Joe. I know my grandfather was accepted into uni but couldn't afford to move to the city and study so became a mechanic.

There's also a trade off in time and money vs value. You don't buy a new car every time you need an oil change because a basic $200 service doesn't seem like much for a $30,000 car. But how many people would spend $200 to fix a microwave? Unless you can fix it yourself with a cheap part it's going to end up costing you that. Furniture, electronics etc. used to be very expensive so you either maintained them or paid someone else to. Now the cost of labour is so high and the cost of new goods so low that society shifted. The other aspect is relative wages. If you can make $50/hr and get a man in for $20/hr then it is worth it. Now it seems like a lot of people are making median/average wages of $30-50/hr and getting anything done by anyone costs hundreds. Each to their own but I do most things myself and get pros in for skilled stuff I either can't do or they can do way more efficiently.

That commentary is hilarious, as are the skiers moans

The boys took a beating on that one, hahaha

I thought the, "watch this again" said with a level of joy could have maybe be toned down a little

There was a comment from Tony Greig at the cricket.
The camera panned to a wedding .

I didnt get the flew in comment.
I was too young at the time.

Sometimes you could hear swearing if they didn't get the cuts right .

I loved metalwork and wanted to go to tech school but that became an "over my dead body" issue and so I went to... Frankston High.

Fortunately I escaped from there and finished my schooling in Auckland, was expected to go to university and joined the railways instead.

My tech studies teacher told me it was a good thing I had a decent head on my shoulders.

This is doing the rounds again - it's from last year and not the Olympics as some are suggesting
Still warrants the repost. Generates waves of male sympathy circling the world with ripples eventually reaching France.

Because Visa is sponsoring the Olympics the venues will only take Visa. They won't take cash either. So if you only have Mastercard, like me, you're ****ed for purchasing anything at the venues.

Can't you load up a prepaid/gift type visa card?

I loved woodwork at school. Still enjoy doing the odd bits and pieces and home but I am too slow and make too many mistakes to have ever made a living out of it.

Pretty much everyone I know that is successful is either book smart with some level of street smarts/practical skills, or has practical skills and also some business acumen. The number of people who are brilliant at something no one needs or practical/book smart and either can't communicate or over/undersell their skills is massive.

I have two floor tiles that need replacing. The tiles I have need to be cut so I purchased a $40 tile cutter today. Went to cut the tile only to realise it doesn't fit. The cutter is 300mm, my tiles are 400mm.

400mm cutter is 90 dollars but has 18 one star reviews so I'm going to avoid that.

Next available cutter is a 600mm at $260. Stuff that for a two tile job.

Nothing on marketplace anywhere. No other tool shop has one for cheaper. Thankfully I have like 20 boxes of these things so I am trying a few methods from the net but no luck yet.
Tile problem all sorted thanks to a legend from here.
