Thoughts on Matthew Lloyd , form queue here

Great player, but I have doubts whether the captaincy will affect his form. I've noticed the few games where he has been captain, he hasn't played all that well. Also, not as easy to verbally "marshall the troops" from full-forward. I think he will be captain, more becuase it's a logical progression, rather than it necessarily being the correct move. I think J.Johnson, would make a great captain, especially being in the think of the action (ala Hird, Voss).

On the other hand, Neitz is a great leader from full-forward, so it's a tough one. I tend to think Lloydy plays his best football without the pressure of being the leader.

I assume you mean he's no good as captain because he had a poor game against Geelong. He's been OK in other games as captain - I think!

I, for one, Thank God every night we have him and I look forward to him Captaining us. What do you think ?

Still don't think he is a captain. Shoot me for having an opinion.

Of the leadership group on Saturday - he was the only one to show leadership - which was great by Lloydy and terrible by the others.

There was such a distinct lack of leadership on the weekend - that is what you can contribute the thrashing to.

Well done Lloydy but one game doesn't change the fact I don't think he is a captain.

I agree. I remember a couple of weeks ago some people were calling for his head.

Nobody's called for his head. The guy is an absolute champion of the game, and the fact that he plays for us is a major reason that we've been in the finals the last six years.

But: I don't know if he's captaincy material.

OK, maybe I was exagerating but I remember earlier on in the year some people (not neccassarily from here) were bagging him etc and there was one particular person on the official essendon website saying that we should trade him!

Would anyone like to re-visit their thoughts on the captaincy given M.Lloyds efforts in leading the side with Hird being out ?

Matthew Lloyd is an absolute champion of the game and without a doubt the best full foward in the game.

I think yesterdays game against port proved that he can be captain and play a great game at the same time

I'm happy to eat my words - but not yet. A couple of good games is very promising but he needs to continue on with this. I can't tell you how happy I was to see him lead the team the way Hird would (and beat that pack of dogs)- and even the week before I thought he did a lot better. But then if you look at the Geelong game - he was terrible when it counted. If he can continue on with this sort of performance - I will have to change my view.

I pray to god I am wrong but I am not getting too carried away just yet. If he has indeed turned the corner then he is our future captain, but 2 performances isn't enough. Do it again next season Lloydy (Hirdy won't get injured again this season :) )and then no one will stand in your way.

Hmm a tough one here, Lloydy has been in the game for quite a while, so would know how the side go, as he is in the ideal position watching the game unravel from full-forward.
I notice some of you say he was crap against Geelong, didn't Hird play some crap games as Captain? (albeit rarely!) Everyone has a bad day in the office every now and then.
Despite all the comments above, I still think Lloydy is capable of captaining a football side. That's just what i think.

good player, **** captain

It's always intrigued me how everyone on the internet seems to know whether a player is good at being a captain. For instance, we see them play, but we don't really hear what they say to each other on the feild, during the breaks etc do we?

I think last night could also be used as an argument as to why he shouldn't be captain. Played very well, but no influence on the result.

Grade 2 Maths lesson:

7 x 6 = 42

+

1 x 1 = 1

Total = 43.

Essendon's winning margin = 40

Matthew Lloyd's point total = 43

40 - 43 = -3

Ummm ... The Great One DID have an influence on the game. That remark was just plain nonsense!!

that remark was for the previous week's game against st. kilda...sorry to reign on your parade :)

Still Undecided

Lloyd's a gun don't get me wrong but still not 100 percent decided that hes the right man to lead the Dons when Hird retires. More performances like Saturday night will help his cause but well just have to wait and see. As for other candidates well only 1 springs to mind... A. MCPHEE all the attributes of a potential captain, hard at it, inspiring, won't take a backwards step. Has the ability to go anywhere on the ground and lift the team when they really need it. Hell at least be a vice captain very soon.

dont get me wrong, lloyd is a great of the game but I would love to see JJ or McPhee given captain (though I think McPhee will probably need a few more years experience at Essendon before he is given this honour). Lloyd way be good for a while but I would love to see these other blokes given a go.
