Has not played yet , slight injury but will play next weekend in a trial. Looks set for debut this year after the following article.
http://www.smh.com.au/news/afl/roos-readies-young-blood-transfusion/2006/02/26/1140888751901.html

More specifically;

"Probably the ones standing out at this stage are [Stephen] Doyle, who I thought was really good yesterday [against the Kangaroos]; obviously [Paul] Chambers and [Ted] Richards, who we got across [recruited] to play senior footy; [Jarred] Moore and [Luke] Vogels, both in their second year and who have been good in the games this year; and then there are the other ones who you are really looking to step up, a few who haven't played yet - [Jarrad] McVeigh, [Tim] Schmidt, and [Josh] Willoughby.

He is looking super fit and put on a lot more muscle bulk. Lets hope for an injury free year and see him reap his potential.

I was a bit surprised by Roos' "promotion" of Willoughby and Schmidt.

I'm very keen to see them play, but they've missed two big opportunities to put themselves into contention, and must now surely be behind Malceski, Moore, McVeigh, Bevan and Spriggs just to get on the emergency list, let alone into the senior team.

As far as I can see, they would need to make a huge impact in the pre-season/reserves, and still need two or three injured midfielders, before they'd be considered for a senior game.

Don't look at football so politically Schmidt is easily the best footballer out of all of them and once brought into the team will be a long term player. His skill level is the best in the AFL thats right the best. For anyone who hasn't seen him play you couldnt believe some of the things he can do. He is a cross between Greg Williams and Nathan Buckley.
They use his kicking action to teach other players how to kick at the AIS.

This is interesting. Can you elaborate on how they use his action to teach others?
During camp they use examples for certain players actions as examples of perfect (or best in afl) styles. I think at one stage they use Buckley and Stuart Dew but now they use Tim.

Gee, I hope that Schmidt, in particular, is ahead of Spriggs. McVeigh and Bevan are injured and Malceski didn't do himself any favours with an indifferent performance last week.

Fitness is going to be the key for Schmidt. He's a true midfielder - I don't see him as a start-out pocket player in the way that Buchanan and maybe Moore were/are. His natural body shape is definitely that of "footballer" rather than "athlete" so the key will be how quickly he can get sufficient endurance to play a meaningful role in the middle of the ground.

Round Three

Was more than handy today, did some very good things in the middle and around the ground. Kicked two goals, one in particular (the torp) showed us that we have something to look forward to in the future. High efficiency in his disposal was the most pleasing thing.

That last goal really taught me something about Schmidt I didn't know. He has a booming kick and backs himself easily from 50m! His work in the last qtr was excellent. He could end up being the young player that Roos promotes to regular senior duty in 2007.

With Crouch and Davis possibly returning, Schmidt would have been a likely player to drop (nothing to do with his performance, just a seniority issue). But Dempster's injury looked bad, and might mean Tim will stay in the side despite Crouch returning.

Would be a shame if he did not retain his place for at least a couple more weeks.

Any chance a more experienced player would be dropped instead of him? perhaps a McVeigh etc.

McVeigh? Are you crazy?

Dempster will be replaced with that knee injury. If not, Grundy might be spending some time in the reserves. Not playing at his best at the moment.

Perhaps one moment fron Sunday's game will be the start of Tim Schmidt's career. Early on in the last quarter, he passed badly straight to a Lion's player. He chased and absolutely crunched the Lion's player.

I remember thinking at the time, yes, show some emotion when you are playing. To me he has in the past appeared to be overwhelmed by the gameplan and was not prepared to trust his instinct.

More than likely co-incidence but after cruching the Lion's player, he appeared to grow in confidence and finished the game in brilliant fashion. Not all young players are like Nick Malceski and slot straight into senior football. For most, only when they believe in their own ability do they make the grade.

One super confident young guy we have is Jesse White. After watching Tom Hawkins do you think Jesse might be worth a gamble?

Read my mind a bit. Although the big difference between Sydney and Geelong is that while they are currently building a functioning forward line (and doing a pretty good job of it from what I can see) our forward line is already peppered with powerful options.

But Jesse certainly has me wanting to punch the fast forward button on the Swans just to see what he turns into. :D
