Wouldn't now be an opportune time to change the name of the Essendon Football Club from "The Bombers" to something a little less violent?
With all of the terrorist activities that have been going on lately (Bali, Madrid & London attacks) I think that the time is right for a change.
As a world traveller, the last thing I want is to get hasseled because I'm wearing a t-shirt that says "I support the Bombers".
Perhaps the EFC could change their name to The Jets? It would certainly keep in line with their Essendon Airport theme.

Ok, instead of moving on with our lives, lets change a name of a sporting team and let them know they have won, thats great spirit crumble when something goes wrong. Cant beleive you are a bomber supporter

Are you the same idiot posting this on every forum?

This is first time I've posted this topic, and yes I am an Essendon supporter.
And my apologies for not doing a search on the topic first.
But why all of the name-calling? I was just making a suggestion which will most likely never happen, but some of you have made out like I was creating a petition to declare Aussie Rules illegal.

What did you expect the reaction to be? This is a forum where passionate Bomber fans come to give their opinions. To suggest we should change our name on the back of a few brain washed morons killing people in the name of religion is a tad extreme. If it was good enough to be the bombers from WWII through the korean war, Vietnam, and the gulf war then we can handle this situation.

this thread and asio must surely be a joke.

to suggest that a sporting team change their name because of world events is taking things a bit far.

we are who we are, the essendon bombers, we shouldnt change that for anyone. asio ******** off.

I have to agree with the consensus here.

Sure, in current circumstances, our name does seem harsh - BUT it has never bothered anyone during WW2, Vietnam, Korea etc then there is no reason to change it now.

We ARE the Bombers - and we will always be the Bombers. If we change our name, we let them win - why should a sporting group change their name because of current events - if we change it once, whos to say that if a jet plane crashes, than we'll have to change it again and so on.

Leave our name alone.

Dougthelegend, thanks for your comments, and I see your point.
Also, this was the kind of conversation (ie: thought-out and non-crude) that I was expecting, and not the vulgar display of profanities that I read earlier today.

Honestly, we're so worried about up-setting people these days.
From the general talk board where they want fathers day to now be known as "Special Person's Day" to this.

Honestly, don't satisfy the few, please the masses.
The name will never change.

here, here......

Ridiculous idea. We're not the Essendon Terrorists or the Essendon Jihad. Bombers does not refer to suicide bombers but to war planes. Why must context be completely ignored in debates like this?

Thank You for not calling me a naughty name, waah, waah, if u make ridiculous threads, your gonna get picked on, deal with it. Dont start sooking.
Im going to apologise in advance for picking on you, please dont tell your mummy on me.

They get a bit of 'Car'n the Dons' or even 'Donbers' out of me.

Always like the caricature of the bomber with the snarling nose. There was some sort of vague precedence with Stkilda moving away from the German colours during one of the wars, but, for a start, the terrorists aren't dropping bombs from aeroplanes.
