Tippa is returning in 2023

Tippa didn’t play all year, it doesn’t compromise the msd at all.
He was listed for 2022 and then 'retired' in May but for all intents and purposes didn't actually, rather just took the rest of the season off.

A player sitting a season out but not officially retiring, or actually being injured, wouldn't normally open up a list spot for the MSD, but in this case did gain Essendon access to a player they wouldn't otherwise have had. That's my point.

Had he retired at the end of last season prior to final list lodgement he wouldn't still be on Essendon's list as he is now. They have been allowed to have it both ways here. Again it's not a huge thing but just saying.

(Not having a crack at Tippa by the way, just describing what's essentially occured).

Like most players that get injured then open up an msd spot.

I don’t think the player has to be injured or retired, just inactive and I don’t think the distinction should matter anyways.

And I don’t see any issues with what’s occurred.

According to this (2022 NAB AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft rules and eligibility) a player can be placed on the inactive list if they suffer a year ending injury or retires. There seems to be no allowance for just taking a break.

Don't get me wrong, I'm pleased he's back, but my point is simple - if he retired, he would normally be off the Essendon list and have to make his way back through normal channels (ie the draft). If he didn't retire, then he stays on the Essendon list but in hindsight they got an extra pick in the MSD (and he wasn't injured so that's not applicable, saying it's like an injury is not the same as it actually being an injury).

It's no big deal like I said in my original post, but just making a passing comment.

Yeah, not sure we would have made the Grand Final without that extra pick.

One small complication which I think the AFL must have had to address is the midseason draft. Essendon picked up 2 players in the midseason draft (D'Ambrosio and Menzie) including with one list spot opened up by his retirement that eventually wasn't, they otherwise would have only had 1 pick. It's an unusual circumstance and you would strongly assume this wasn't the aim from Essendon in the first place, but such a thing does comprise the MSD a little.
it does a little, but I think the MSD is working pretty well giving players who otherwise wouldn't get it a chance.

Similar with Carlton whereby Jones retired, they got the MSD pick, then they were compensated when he joined the Dogs.
it's not perfect, but I wouldn't mess with the MSD.

I think retirements stay on lists until the end of the year (cap implications, etc).
guess only. really no idea how the AFL rules work......or are applied

Can somebody please explain how come back from retirement works. Is he straight back on the Essendon list? FA, draft?

Long term mental health break is injury... He would not have been permitted to come back and play if he had changed his mind midseason.

They got compo for losing him and then used the compo pick on him.

Only joking. No idea but it's the afl and they make the rules up as they go along.

He probably has to enter the pre season draft and then they use a late pick on him.

If he is AFL fit he i a sight to see when he is up and about. It is good for Essendon and the comp. I enjoy watching Tippa in full flight.
