Big inside info is that Sydney will give up Mitchell for Tippett. From very respected sources. :thumbsu:
As a followup to my previous post, the other big inside info is that Sekaj was just shit-stirring the Sydney supporters on our board.

I heard the same rumours.

how ridiculous that the AFL are going to wait until mid way through the trade period to announce the compo picks - of course they will have an impact on the trade period, I would have thought that would be plain ******* obvious.

seriously, its like they make shit up on the run and never seem to do anything in a manner which reflects the multi billion dollar business they run.
That's why they left a whole week of the trade period after the FA period had concluded...

Excuse me but when was the last time the Swans went after a big named player in trade week?
The last time you needed one, noting that Goodes has basically filled the hole left by Hall - but now Goodes is only 1 (maybe 2) years away from retirement, so it's time to go big game hunting again.

but why bother? why not make the announcement and then that the 3 week period?

It is a bullshit bandaid approach the AFL take to most things these days.

A F/S that was touted as a top 10 draft pick. He hasn't played because he has had his injuries this year. I think you're overstating Tippett's worth if you think we'd give up Mitchell to get him. Assuming you'll be wanting a draft pick to go with it.
So.. Mitchell is worth a top-10 pick. Tippett is worth a top-10 pick, plus a pick in the 11-20 range. You do the math..

I feel like nothing is going to get done until all these compo picks get sorted, AFL have really bugged this whole Free Agency/Trade period thing up. I think looking at the amount of speculation from both Swans and Crows boards no one has the foggiest idea of what will happen. It doenst help with clowns like Damian Barrett throwing baseless rumours around willy nilly. This is the first time a trade has been done with the Swans that I can remember where I genuinely have no idea whatsoever is going to be offered up.
Completely agree. As David Noble was saying last night, a lot of clubs are sitting on their hands until the compo is decided. Saints look like getting a first rd pick. Nobody knows what Port will get, as they lost Pearce and Chaplin, who together make up more in salary than Goddard, so will they get a first round pick as well? Would put everyone after pick 7 back another rung.

Mitchell is going to be a gun midfielder. Why would we trade him to you for a forward who is probably the 10th best forward in the league right now (probably worse than that).

About to be the highest non-expansion team player in the league though?

I don't know, ask your coach and CEO.

I guess a big part is that Tippet is already AFL ready Forward.Ruck, where are you are talking potential.

They can't let the post-season stretch on forever. They've modified it this year so that it runs for 4 weeks - 1 week for FA deals, 2 weeks for both FA and trading, 1 week for trading alone.

This is the first year that the AFL has had FA in place. I suspect that they'll do things differently in 2013, based on the lessons learned this year. I think it's harsh being overly judgemental on them, given that they had no idea how FA & trading would interract with each other (ie clubs holding off on trading until they know what compo picks they have from FA moves).

I don't think I'm being hard at all.

my point is, why not have FA period, then assign the compo picks, then have trade period.

If the AFL had no idea that teams would consider trading the compo picks, or that those picks would have an impact on clubs position is preposterous, of course it will, they are interring in the market either would or should have known this.

I don't think they will do this though. E.G. Bris wanted to know what was happening with the Tippett trade before they would sign other free agents. If FA happens and then trading, they can't do this, therefore limiting movements in FA. Has to overlap IMO.

I have no problem with the two interacting. My suggestion is as follows:
  • Compo picks have to be announced as soon as the deal is made. Forget about this "balance of Free Agents in and out" rubbish. This balancing act is preventing a whole lot of FA deals from going through, because clubs are afraid of diluting the picks that they're going to get after losing a major player (eg Goddard) early.
  • Reduce the FA period to 2 weeks - 1 week alone, 1 week overlapping with the trading period.
  • Leave the trade period at 3 weeks, as this should allow more deals to be done, as clubs will have time to properly assess the players on offer.

I agree with your first point, it is crazy. However I would add there shouldn't be compo it is just plain stupid.

I think they can keep it at 4 weeks, FA period 2 weeks and the 2 weeks trading.

If they get rid of the compo picks the issue also goes away.

and yet you're club is offering the "10th best forward in the league" a million dollars. Imagine how much of that extra salary cap money you would have to use if he was a top 3 best forward in the league.

The compenstion system for free agency is a joke as well when clubs have manipulated the process in order for them to secure compensation picks.

Surely the Monfries deal will be the catalyst for a significant change to the FA system next year.
