Looks better in thw ruck than he has as a full time forward. Rekon he is gonna be more Brad Ottens than Tom Hawkins.

No not really. Other than his first mark nothing stood out. It was s Vickery type game.

True - it sure wasn't a Cloke type game, that's for sure.

He'll get better.

He's only 21.

Hawkins and Boyd are very similar. People forget how bad Hawkins was for so long after his debut.

The rucking is important for Boyd, just as it was for Hawkins. It builds his tank, improves his contested ball, ground level play, reading of the play, defensive efforts etc etc. Yeah he gets tired and then struggles up forward but if he was plonked forward all game and didn't touch it then that doesn't help him develop. He's too cumbersome and doesn't have the tank or nous to play CHF right now, so the ruck is the best option for him when he's not deep forward.

Eventually he should be able to play alongside 2 rucks, especially if the Dogs find a mobile 2nd option like a Stanley. Put a Stanley type (2nd ruck/mobile forward), Crameri (mobile half forward), Stringer (mobile goal kicker/midfielder) and Boyd as a key forward who can play deep and up the ground and you'll have a great forward line and a very good Tom Boyd.
Well said mate. Pretty much spot on with all your points. One thing he can do also is kick the footy.

I rate players on their influence and not some stats off a stat sheet.

He played an average game at best. No influence at all. If that's the standard then he's still grossly overpaid.

Ridiculous ... some people will never praise Boyd whatever he does

Travis Cloke won a best and fairest when he was 20 in a team that lost to an unstoppable Geelong by 5 points in a preliminary final.

Also, dual AA, flag, 4 time club goals winner...

Let us know when Boyd gets anywhere near that.

That will be a big help for you guys going forward.

For goal? Nice straight action, seems pretty reliable but doesn't have huge penetration at this stage, that should come with the tank. Decent field kick, certainly better than most ruckman, but I haven't seen him get the ball across half forward and hit targets inside 50 all that often, probably because with all due respect he doesn't get the ball there all that often!

Haven't kept track of this thread at all because of how it was always going to pan out.

Watching him tonight he greatly reminded me of Josh Kennedy in his last year at Carlton. People (mainly opposition supporters) were convinced he was too slow and wouldn't make it and he was being tried as a second ruck. Really hope Boyd follows a similar path to JK.

Reasonable game but if it were any other player it wouldn't warrant the same praise and attention.

If he does it five weeks in a row then we might have something.

So tell me, what influence did he have on the game?

He kicked 3 of 11 goals ... pretty helpful start. He provided a target around the ground and while he didn't mark it often he earnt a few free kicks and was surprisingly good in close with his hands. His pickup and quick handball helped set up Jong's goal ...

Would definitely have lost by more if he didn't play

If you can't answer that yourself, you don't deserve to be answered. If you don't rate him, cool, but don't make inane comments. Makes you look like a moron.
I can answer it, you just don't like that answer.

He had zero influence on the game. He didn't test the Geelong defence and had zero impact in the ruck. Most of his disposals were ineffective but he did kick well after been gifted a few shots from the umpires.

The one thing the Dogs cried out for all game was a strong marking forward. At the very least someone to crash packs. Boyd couldn't provide that.

If it was any other young player in the game , everyone would be saying he's developing nicely.

Honestly you should give up watching football then, it's clearly not your thing.

It wasn't a superstar performance, but he was good, got himself into advantageous positions and got rewarded, and was among the Dogs' best on the night. Definitely a step in the right direction, which is all you can ask for at this stage. He's not going to suddenly turn into Wayne Carey overnight, so I don't really see why him putting in one of his better individual games still results in poo-pooing and negativity from some.

three goals is having no impact?

Boy, hasn't Roo played some "no impact" games over the years!
