"Over the past two weeks, Redpath has taken more contested marks and marks inside 50s than any other player in the competition. Just as importantly, he’s kicked three goals in each game, taking his tally to 19 goals from his past eight AFL matches."

We may not even need Boyd longer term if Redpath continues his recent form, although we'd expect Boyd to develop into one of the better forward/rucks in the competition (arguably the hardest role on an AFL list to fill) sow ill help immensely when he develops

Not going to downplay Jack's out-put which has been very good, but the vast majority of those games have been against pretty poor opposition.

His test will be against top 6 quality teams.

Can you do Stringer v Membrey now?

How about Billings v Hunter?

The only thats not comparable is the contract
And their height, position, players that play on them etc. etc.

Membrey isn't a 200cm key forward. He doesn't play like one. He doesn't get the attention of one. He doesn't have the potential of one. 200cm is a real point of difference in AFL, Membrey doesn't offer that and he won't get paid like that.

Boyd is not being paid on his current performance, he's being paid on potential. Tall key forwards are the AFL's most prized commodity, that's what it takes to get one to your club.

Not knocking Membrey, he's a good player and probably should have gone earlier in the draft. But he's just not going to get Boyd money.

If we ever field a team in the NEAFL we'll definitely trade for Membrey. Thanks for the heads up.

Comparing Tom to Tim is unreasonable

Should be comparing Tom to Jesse Hogan, Paddy McCartin and Josh Schache
Right now I'd have the 3 ahead of him. All 4 will be great players IMO

People who think it's unnecessary to compare contracts when comparing players are not getting with the times or new era. If your paying a guy well above his worth youre sacrificing money spent on other players/areas.

Not saying I would even rather Membrey than Boyd when including contracts but you have to discuss it, we're one of the last sports to understand tha and definitely the last sets of fans to take it into account.

Other sports trade Draft picks with overpaid players just to get them off their books. The afl is heading that way very soon and if Boyd keeps it up he might be one of the first along with Cloke to get that treatment.

These stats are a bit meaningless without number of games played. Membrey played 1 AFL game for the Swans in two years so would've seen plenty of NEAFL action. Boyd played 9 or 10 games in his one year at GWS.

It's a silly comparison anyway since Boyd is 12cm taller. I'm sure Membrey's stats are much better than McCartin's at this point but I doubt any Saints fans would prefer to keep the former.

I agree with this but salary cap management and shuffling contracts around is huge in the AFL and the Dogs were in a pretty unique situation in 2014.

If Tom Boyd eats $1m out of their salary cap each year for 7 years then it's not a good deal unless becomes Buddy, even though the cap is going up significantly from next year. And he hasn't delivered million dollar value over 2015/16 either.

With a young list and Griffen walking out they were in trouble meeting the salary cap floor. Money saved year to year isn't banked either. Trading in Boyd was a risk but the alternative was another draftee and front loading existing contracts with no guarantee of a big fish a year or two later.
