Analysis Tom Mitchell

For those who always suggest no plan B from Horse against Hawthorn, Mcveigh was moved forward in 4th quarter kicking 2 goals and Tom Mitchell moved onto Sam Mitchell who up until then had been running riot in the midfield and curbed his influence to 3 possessions in the last quarter. Good coaching by Horse and a bit of luck with some wayward kicking by Hawks and game goes Swans way.

Indeed for once we changed a few things around in the past 2 goals down with 12mins to go we probably go on to lose by 5-6 goals.

Longmire finally matched Clarko in the box on Saturday night.

People talk about our inside mids; Kennedy, Parker, et al, but Tom is a pure inside mid (not outside at all). His presence frees up our other insiders to do more outside and forward work. He is essential to our team and I'm sure will be a major part of our team for the next 8-9 years.

I actually feel sorry for Bird. Might we loose him?

I think as has been said in the past, one of him or Mitchell to go. Mitchell near cementing his spot and giving a bit more flexibility to the side makes me think he keeps Bird out with current 22. Add his youth and salary I think the club see's him the one to go with. Sadly for old mate Bird who I rate.

Just the squeeze that comes with a side in contention, with solid depth through the mids and some talent coming in the draft.

Bird to go for bid points. I hope to GWS if thats the case, stays home and near his mates.

He'd be running around with Jed Lamb. GWS' midfield depth is extremely good. Shiel, Treloar, Ward, Whitfield, Greene, Griffen, Coniglio, Kelly are just the top line. Guys like Palmer, Smith, Scully, Ahern, Bugg, Hoskin-Elliott, Steele, Pickett and Lamb get shunted to other roles or the NEAFL.

There's no way GWS would pick up Bird. They've got all the experienced players they need and their young guys now have mature bodies. Bird doesn't have the talent required to be at GWS. That's no slight on Bird, it's just that he's reached his ceiling.

If I was Bird I'd be thinking very seriously about moving on next year. Personally I think he's best 22, playing that defensive mid/forward role. But Horse thinks otherwise, and honestly, you can throw a blanket over our bottom 11 or so (sometimes this seems like a good thing, other times not so much). Even if he makes it back, he doesn't have much in the way of job security, but I could see him going to a bunch of other clubs and playing regular footy.

Some club will go for him for sure. I highly doubt that we'll get a lot in return (a pick in the 40's or 50's maybe) but the club has shown that they're willing to help a trusted clubman find a new home if they want out.

Bird is the only decent depth we have. Trading him would be madness.

Who is to say Hewett, Robinson, Jones, etc can't do that job? I know what you are saying but these players deserve a chance too.

Bird would be attractive to only a handful of clubs and a pick in the mid 40s out would be the best we could hope for. But with the way the new academy drafting rules have been framed, pick 45 is actually worth pick 34 for an academy selection so that's a fair trade.

I think now Bird is only a depth player for us and I would hope guys like Robinson, Hewett, Rose would step up to his level fairly quickly. I think we need to start exposing a few of these guys to seniors just in case of injuries.

I'm definitely not writing him off yet but it's always tough to see guys like bird who give absolutely everything on the field playing in the reserves because of one or two small shortcomings. Jarred Moore and Paul Bevan were in a similar boat.

Pretty good article by Emma Quayle about Tom and how injuries held him back from getting fitter, I guess there was a reason he wasn't playing after all. There goes another BF conspiracy theory.

Mitchell arrived in Sydney at the end of 2011 with knee tendonitis, a problem that lasted through most of his first year. He injured a foot at the end of 2012, and an ankle late in 2013. He has started every pre-season later than almost all his teammates, and had other niggling injuries prevent him from completely catching up. More than once he has started to wonder when or whether it was going to stop.

It wasn't until last October that Mitchell was able to do an off-season program, and start from the same place as everyone else. It helped, as did everything that happened after that. He was able to get fitter, not just fit. He was able to train for hours every day and every week, working on his game before having to worry about whether it would lead to a game.

First player in the history of the AFL to not be fit while having 29 disposals and more tackles in a game than any of his teammates managed all year?

He's even better than I thought he was.

Yep, his tackling was my highlight from the game

I can't remember if it was mcveigh who said it or one of the coaches but he himself moved forward on his own. The coaching staff didn't tell him to move forward. Great on-field leadership and game sense shown by him. Kudos to the coaches and tom mitchell in curbing sam mitchell in the 4th.
