interesting to see his troubles early on, could have already been on a list if not for injuries during his tac cup years.

Doesn't seem all that confident in getting a contract for next year, surely we would need him for some depth next year. clearly best mid at box hill, getting tagged week in week out. also seeing as he has told there is not a spot for him this year maybe he is one of the young guns who may leave us yet again in october.

I found his attitude a bit negative and pessimistic, which is sad because he has put in a consistent strong performance in the twos,. For whatever reason, the club refuses to give him a senior run, and from his comments seem to have given him the impression he may not be around next year.

It blows my mind that we haven't even given him a game against a weak side like GWS/Melb/PA etc, from what I've seen/read he looks a pretty decent player, and it would be a tragedy to delist him. I would think there's a bit of a fight for a spot between Tom and Hallahan, however I think Tom has been a more consistent performer.

I find it doubly sad that Tom has been putting in consistent performances, is refused a run, and yet we've had some players running around in really poor form throughout the year; eg: Smith and Savage have been turning in horrible performances over recent weeks (Smith was handy against Cats). What is the point of alleged depth, if you never pull the trigger and use it? (I know Tom isn't a like-for-like replacement to either of those players, but bring him in and shuffle other things around a bit just to get him some experience etc)

We've had a spare Rookie spot for an eternity with Osborne on the LTI, really surprising that they won't upgrade him :(

Au contraire, I don't find the article to be at all negative or pessimistic, but an honest self-appraisal from Tom. He's been good for Box Hill, but he's definitely struggled with the extra attention paid to him in the last few weeks (plus no Cam Bruce to provide a chop-out on those pesky taggers on Tom hasn't helped).

Tom's senior aspirations aren't helped by the fact that he can basically play only one position - inside midfield, and he has a top five AFL midfielder ahead of him, plus another genuine tough-nut midfielder also ahead of him. It makes it very difficult for the club to reward good, but not outstanding form, when the club has Mitchell and Sewell in its ranks and the club needs to encourage players to spread from contests when Hawthorn is in possession.

Fair call Dixie, and I'll defer to your judgement, as you've probably seen a lot more of him than I. Does he have the capacity to broaden his range into a pocket or flanker role - or is he too slow?

Schneider does know where the goals are and he knows how to kick them, too. He could, in time, broaden his range into a forward pocket, but he's never going to be a flanker, IMO - he is just too slow around the ground. His greatest asset is his speed of thought in pack situations, just like his mentor. With Mitchell 30 next year, there will be scope for Schneider to start earning senior selection in 2013 (if he remains a Hawk and his form warrants it) because I'm sure the club will look towards the next generation of inside midfielders to take over from Mitchell and Sewell.

Having said all that, Box Hill will just about always play Schneider in the guts because he pretty much is Box Hill's best inside midfielder. Unless Hawthorn tells Box Hill that Schneider is to be played elsewhere, then I don't see Schneider having a real opportunity to add strings to his bow.

The lad sounds like a bit of a character. Seems kinda funny.

I actually thought he sounded pretty level headed about his chances/future. I thought earlier on that he might have got a chance this year but am willing to trust the coaches - we don't see everything. Maybe there is something the coaches want him to work on or something, that he hasn't done yet.

But we (and the coaches) should remember players like mitchell and sewell (who both won't be around forever) both had unconventional paths to where they are now (Sewell a rookie and Mitch missing out on being drafted right away) and having Mitch as a mentor is perfect for this kid.

I imagine we will upgrade this kid at the end of the year but if we don't i reckon he would get a chance at one of the other clubs for sure. Hope we give him a shot though.

played well on the weekend, and did a little job down foward in the 2nd half managing to snag a couple. showing that he can kick straight at least.

I would hate to see him leave us though and exceed much like some of the box hill players in past have done. But he could also follow sammys footsteps and come up through the vfl

An in form Schneider adds less than an out of form Savage, if what you lack is outside pace.

At 178cm he has to be able to do a lot of things well to make the AFL grade.

Not super quick or acceleration, not a great contested mark, not a really long kick, not a huge tank...

I hope he gets his chance, but his limitations as a player are concerning in today's game.

These comments would have been made, and probably were made by 16 AFL clubs, about Sam Mitchell before Hawthorn took a risk on Mitchell in the 2001 draft. Let me hasten to add that this doesn't mean that Schneider is the second coming of Sam Mitchell, but having watched him regularly this season, it's clear that Schneider does have talent and does have work ethic. Of course, at the end of the day, he might end up being the second coming of Garry Moss rather than the second coming of Sam Mitchell, but he is a fine footballer and, for a stretch earlier this season, was (IMO) knocking on the door of selection, at least from an outsider's perspective.

I trust the club will make the right decision BUT if they decide to cut him off the list at year's end without giving him a single opportunity at the top level to see what he's got I will be a little dissapointed.

That's all well and good, but for outside pace, Savage is currently behind Young, Smith and probably Shiels. Schneider is behind Mitchell, Lewis, Sewell, Hodge, Burgoyne, Whitecross...

We currently have a lot of his type so unfortunately he has to wait.

Personally, I would love to see him get a game and cement his spot. With Hallahan finally fit and Woodward showing some promise before his injury, the competition continues to increase though.

Now that Shiels has been given a week's rest by the MRP, any chance Tom can get a run? Or will we see Ellis/Bateman?

He's still on the Rookie list isn't he?

Get the feeling that Changa, Hill and Ellis are all ahead of him in the 'being considered over the next two rounds' list.

Justin Bieber??? There are some things in life you just keep private.

Sam Mitchell dominated the VFL. Schneider is a very good player for box Hill player. That is the difference at this stage.

Yep, agree with this.

From (failing) memory Sam was a standout in his first year at VFL level.

Won the VFL Bronlow equivalent in his second year with 31 votes out of a maximum of 33 (partially playing with Hawks senior team).

Tom is an excellent player at VFL level, really not sure he can transfer that to AFL, if so, it will have to be as an inside midfielder, or maybe a small forward (a la Callinan for Adelaide). Realistically, barring injury, its hard to see him playing seniors.
