Tom Stewart bump on Noah Anderson

Probably the right decision. The AFL really should be more lenient on football actions.

The player didnt have the ball so Stewart didnt have tackling as an option, and made body contact which is ok. That subsequently there is head contact with the ground is unfortunate but i just dont think the AFL should be punishing that. There has to be a line drawn somewhere - as we saw with Meek last week.

Had he hit high then for sure the usual 3 weeks.

Probably the best execution of a bump i have seen in a long time. It comes at a time too with uproar and outrage at everyone wanting a head to roll for every bump, and we now have a huge impact bump that flattened a bloke and it was done to textbook perfection..

The AFL communitt now knows the bump is well and truly alive, but the ownus of execution lies with the player to do it right.

Interesting to see how hard 3aw went on that bump, basically all saying it was totally wrong and would get weeks.

Most other commentary was fairly lenient thinking it would get off or maybe a week.

Now, this is a contentious one that is absolutely worthy of a thread.

It's well known that Stewart is a thug with a history of bumps, not to dissimilar to this one.

This bump was in days gone by, a perfect example of a bump, but it's 2025 and these bumps are no longer excepted!

Here is why this is contentious. The bump is still a, albeit small, part of our game. We want to see bumps, we love the bump, but not outside a contest for the ball!

How i see it is Anderson is going down trying to collect the loose ball when Stewart sees his opportunity to hurt someone. At no stage did Stewart look to contest the ball, actually running past the ball to make contact with a wide open Anderson. Thankfully for both players, he didnt get him high.

The bump did cause Anderson's head to make forceful contact with the ground and he was most certainly distressed as he laid on the ground for a couple of minutes before he was helped to get back on his feet.

He was cleared of a concussion but taken to hospital to get his "chest" looked at.

This has a lot of Jackson Archer/Luke Cleary contentiousness feel about it!
Suspended once in 171 games

There's a good reason for the old saying, "Is that true, or did you hear it on 3AW?"

The AFL should use the Stewart bump as a text book example of how to do it. He should be lauded for his duty of care and application. He was never going to be suspended for a bump that had no long lasting ramifications for the player concerned in a body contact sport. The head was not hit, the bump was perfectly executed and Stewart just plays a tough game, that's all.

Well, she says it was head high contact, so she's off to a flier.

Don't see why it should've been a free kick TBH.
He did nothing wrong.

Yes, my point exactly.

Chris Scott spending half his presser trying to get Stewart off was pretty unedifying. Fwiw I don't think he should be suspended but can't Scott just keep his trap shut and let the mrp do their job?
Sam Mitchell is no saint but when Meek got Lipinski late he said he hoped the latter was ok and that he wouldn't be commenting on a possible mrp sighting. That should be the stock standard response imo
Can’t disagree, re: Scott, it was a bit over the top and really not necessary. But Sam still owes Ken 20k, after his unnecessary and bizarre older man sook commentary last year. Coaches will defend their own though, so it is what it is.

I'm interested to hear/know Wheatleys opinion on this one. He was very strong last week re Meeks incident that the player should be culpable for the head contact with the ground.

The line needs to be drawn at some point I guess we will find out in this case where it sits.
He will probably do a Hodge, Lewis, Dunstall, Brereton or Dixon and gloss over it because it involves a member of the team he supports. There are no bigger mouthpieces on football incidents than these guys except when a Hawthorn players puts himself in the gun, then there’s nothing to see here, let’s just wait and let the AFL do their job.

I'd probably sook too if I shook hands with Ken post-game, had a cordial chat where I congratulated him on the victory then watched him go and bizarrely taunt Ginnivan (while everyone around him looked bewildered).

Yeah fair enough, I guess what you are saying is that in certain instances, it is okay for coaches to use the press conferences as a vehicle to pressure the AFL disciplinary processes.

In Scott’s defence at least he was advocating for his player to get off, Voss did the same thing in his PC this week for the opposite outcome. But Scott should know better and definitely more likely to rub oppo fans up the wrong way. Ultimately I think both tribunal outcomes were fair.

But, yeah I guess Mitchell was in the right, Ken should never have taunted Ginni, because it wasn’t like he had it coming. And to be fair Ginni hasn’t done anything similar to opposition since, nothing like Willie Rioli disrespecting Hawthorn earlier in the year. Jack has really grown from the whole incident and put his head down, Sam should be proud at how he’s handled it and brought him along since.
