thanks all. its a midfield which is finally starting to grow some teeth. being able to rotate the "class" with murphy, gibbs, & stevens - the "grunt in and under" with bentick & carrazo and the "marking, running tall" with walker & kouta - its starting to have some multiple strings. add the wingers and the durable (simpson, scotland, houlihan, rusell, betts etc) and it has some shape. still need to develop a few stronger grunts though - but looks much improved.

how do you feel it shapes up against richmond in round 1?
richmonds midfielders - johnson, deledio, tivendale, tuck, polo, hyde, tambling, krakour, white, foley

Simpson
Murphy
Scotland
Simpson
Bentick
Carrazzo
Koutoufides
Russell
Houlihan
Gibbs

Walker, Lappin and Betts to also spend some time in the middle.

And yes, Carlton's midfield is much better than Richmond's.

EDIT: Forgot about Blackers-it's because he hasn't been getting a run in the team...but I think he can and will definitely be in our best 22 by the end of the year.

well, i dont know if its quite as clear cut as that, but either way - i dont think its something to brag about. Whose is better than whose is really yet to be seen this season, but its safe to say that both would be somewhere in the ballpark of 11th-16th midfield in the league

to add my 2 cents worth

Murphy - will get the oppositions best tagger
Stevens
Bentick
Carrazzo
Simpson
Koutoufidies
Scotland
Houlihan
Gibbs
Grigg

With
Russell, Betts, Blackers, Walker, Lappin all there if needed as well.

I'd find a place for Blackwell in there also. Only problem being he doesn't really bring anything different to the table. I love him, but needs a bit of height, or a turn of pace. Perhaps if Grigg and Benjamin come on, he could slot into the rotations while maintaining a good balance in the midfield.

I posted in a previous thread that I thought that Johno Browns inclusion for saturday nights game shouldnt matter alot to us. This is due to the fact that our midfield has been performing so well.

The midfield looks great on paper and even better on the field.

Hard to cut it to 10, but Blackwell would definitely be in our rotations I would think. He'd play more footy in there than a Scotland / Walker and Gibbs for this season at least I would have thought, with the first two playing predominately from defense and Gibbs I would expect would spend a bit of time up forward / on the bench.

I know it's early, but the rotations mentioned in this thread has me praying we draft yet another gun midfielder with our first pick in this year's draft. Scotland, Bentick, Carrazzo, Houlihan and Russell don't have the class or the hardness to win us a flag if you compare them to the midfield of the Eagles, Crows, Dockers, Saints and Swans. Gibbs, Simpson and Murphy are class acts, but the Saints would have them covered with Dal Santo, Ball, Hayes, Gram, Goddard(he is a gun) and Armitage.

Here's hoping the best kid available at our first pick is an onballer like Ball or Mclean and not a ruckman such as Kreuzer, Bellchambers and McEvoy. Grigg and Blackwell are still young and Walker is best suited to the wing and half back flank.

I'm with you on that one. IMO we're one or two high performing midfielders short at ATM. They could come from within our list or at the next draft, either way, we won't reach the top without some more midfield assistance.

Bit harsh there on Scotland. Bentick and Carrazzo could prove you wrong i hope.

But scotland is extremely hard and very good for us.

Really you need at least 12 players rotating through the midfield in modern football. Standard midfield at the moment basically has 2 wings, 1 in and under player (centerman?), 2 on-ballers, and at least 1 stopper. Then you need to be able to rest all those guys at some point.

I'd say our current rotation (starters listed, rotation player in brackets) is something like:
Wing 1: Simpson (Russell/Lappin)
Wing 2: Houlihan (Betts)
Center: Murphy (Bentick/Blackwell)
on-baller: Stevens (Koutoufides)
on-baller: Scotland (Gibbs)
stopper: Carazzo (Walker)

Looking at that midfield, we are still way short of where we want to be. Our first 6 isn't bad, but we lack a genuine stopper - especially with Walker generally starting in the backline. I'm not sold on Houlihan either... but he's been better this pre-season

Our second rotation is where we get killed. I've ripped Pagan in the past for how he has managed his rotations, but when you look at it we have some clear issues there. We really only have 1 genuine AFL standard midfielder in that group - Walker (and thats debateable). Betts has shown promise this pre-season, Russell seems to be coming along, and Kouta still has his moments. Bentick seems to be there some days but not others, and Lappin is past his best.

Its no surprise we tend to fade in the last few minutes of quarters. That secondary midfield isn't up to standard, so we either leave our starters in too long and tire them out, or get blown away when our secondary goes in. I guess using Carazzo instead of Walker in the primary group is an attempt to balance it a bit more, but we're still probably 2 years and 3 extra players away from having an a-grade standard midfield IMO.

The plan this year seems to be to play athletic, undersized ruckmen as followers around the ground, to try and stretch the opposition a bit through the midfield. Be interesting to see how that works - it means you tend to give up first use of the ball, but get and advantage if you can win it back...

I just don't rate Scotland as a high performing midfielder and definately not an elite midfielder. Don't think we should dump him or anything, as he has a role to play, but we also need better players than him out there.

Bentick is a maybe as a ball getter and I think Carrazzo just lacks polish. I want another top-bracket mid before I get too comfortable.

There's one you are all missing. A bit from left field but Thornton has showed a desire to play on the ball and through the middle.
I know he's rather tall for a "normal" on baller but he has pace and can get through a crowded pack.He can play offensive and defensive.
