Does anyone who thinks this is a bad trade not think that Dalrymple will have looked at those picks and signed off on this trade being the right move before we pulled the trigger? The man is a draft genius and he knows better than any of us and probably anyone in the world on how the talent in this draft is spread. We wouldn't be making this trade if it wasn't to our advantage.

Look at it this way, Dalrymple and JMac prefer 20+21, SOS (the guy who actively brought in an army of spuds from GWS) prefers pick 11.

Carlton and Melbourne who will most likely be future rivals have done really well to turn their list over and improve.
Melbourne yes big tick (Bugg and two top ten picks), Carlton hell no - a bunch of GWS list cloggers and they trade out their 3rd, 4th and 5th best goalkickers from 2015.
This is after trading out their best goalkickers in recent years (Betts, Kennedy, Gartlett, etc).

While I agree with what you have said, since the switch to 18 teams, pick 18 isn't a true, old style first rounder, nor are 21/22 etc. But you can pick up good players there. If we are going deep in September soon, we all better get used to having picks in the mid-to-late teens....
We should get used to late teen early 20s picks, but we had 11. We had 11.

On paper the trade looks bad, but calm the **** down seriously. Dal has clearly decided on the players, and knows that neither are likely to be taken by the time they get to 20.

You think he'd do this without that knowledge?

You guys are looking at the indicators rather than the substance behind them. Same thing happened last year with our four picks!

Agree entirely Dannnnnnn. Have no idea about the draft. But the general concept of not having a top 20 pick, 2 years in a row worries me.
That's fine Fronk, totally get that and to be honest I'm in a similar boat (although I reckon McLean ends up looking every bit like a top 10 pick). I just think the "sky is falling" crap is short sighted and ridiculous to be frank. The emotive language and abuse some are loading their opinions with is pretty hilariously hyperbolic. Cool for people to disagree with the trade and have an opinion - personally just getting sick of the abuse hurled at the club whenever they do something people don't necessarily agree with.

11 for 20 and 21??? i don't like it but surely, SURELY Dal thinks there isn't anything good at 11 and we're better off having 2 2nd rounders instead.
He's picked his man and he'll still be there at 20/21, that's what I reckon.

Amusing to sit back and watch other clubs turn each other inside out and into knots with complicated deals trying to come up with a team as good as ours. :)

By definition, there will be about ten players we are going to miss out on.

Whether or not we want them cannot really be judged in October, though.
Agree but various posters must have intimate knowledge of the talent available if they are so sure this is a wrong move. Surely they wouldn't be so outraged otherwise.

I'd be more concerned if I didn't believe Toby McLean was a top 10 talent from last year's draft.
What are you talking about? Caleb Marchbank and Blaine Boekhorst are much better!

I know Boekhorst was a second round pick but it still makes me laugh :D

Simplistic. We were happy to delist Talia anyway so whatever draft pick we received for him was inconsequential.

Please tell us which player we should be taking at 11 when the pundits say that after the first three it is very even up to the middle of the second round? Is this player clearly better than the two we will get at 20 and 21.
Obviously none of us know. But most of the time you take pick 11 if you have that decision. 2 years in a row we don't have a 1st round pick. We did well last year but this could very easily been 2 years of nothing draft picks and that is very risky and scary.

Is it possible to go backwards in a draft period coz this is pIss weak

We have traded DOWN in a weak draft and picked up not one KP we need

Disgusted
Oh come on, its not like they did it by accident. Obviously the player Dal rates and would have picked at 11 is just as likely to be there at 21, but now we have an extra pick in the 2nd round. How could that not be obvious?

Picks 20 + 21 last year were Laverde & Goddard - if anything remotely similar is available this year I'd be over the moon.

Could have been....but wasn't. On one hand we applaud Dalrymple but then aren't prepared to back him this year. Bizzarre.

We appeared to have given away Pick 69 and a player rat for nothing, simply to make sure that Adelaide didn't get him in the PSD.

Not sure whether I'll eventually rationalise this, but certainly it doesn't sit quite right at the moment.

Zeph's meltdown reminds me exactly of the two or three posters who had an absolute fit when we didn't take James Seller at draft time.

I love how some posters give no credit to a recruiting team that has picked the absolute eyes out of every draft since 2011 - we've probably taken the best player available at every pick since the start of the 2011 rookie draft (2011 was a horrible draft year if anyone wants to check).

Why has it cost the club?
Thought without Tailgate we may have got more for him but seems we were happy to just get rid of him(glad we did and I don't blame the club)

Seems to me thus far has cost him nothing.

Would have preferred the club just delisted him and let him nominate PSD or National Draft.

Would have thought 11 was worth more than 20 and 21, but that's just me.
According to the new points system:

Pick 11 = 1329 points
Pick 20 + Pick 21 = 878 + 845 = 1723 points

It's tough to judge this trade now. We will only know on draft night if they player we wanted at 11 slips to 20 before we can call this a win or a loss.

Amazing how many posters now suddenly rate a bloke they have been bagging for two years.

Talia's fate was sealed the moment the club was made aware of his indiscretion. He was a certainty to be delisted and other clubs knew this, hence the absolute lack of genuine interest in trading anything of significance for him. The idea that he would fetch a 3rd rounder let alone a 2nd as some have been suggesting was fanciful to say the least.

How about we have a team with a raft of top draft picks and a recruiter who has done a brilliant job uncovering gold in later rounds/the rookie draft.

None of them have been screaming out about leaving because they believe in the future we're building and we've shown faith in them by not shopping them around and undermining the unity of the team.

Another year into Boyd, Libba comes back, natural improvement from McLean, Webb, Daniel, Cordy, Dale and Hamilton and we bring in 3 top 30 picks on top of that. Future.bright.
