We'll probably finish bottom 4, dunno about the FA rules.

I trust you'll tell Fronkilicious that his similar post re Minson possibly leaving is crap too. :)

If Cooney was really offered a 3 year deal, he was mad not take it.

Firstly, it would require Minson to want to leave something he has said with no reservations he never wants to do. Let's assume the unlikely scenario that he can be enticed. Okay next let's assume that his form continues on like this year, which was partially helped by him basically playing a lone hand in 22 games of football. Now lets assume that teams are interested in someone that may only play another 3 years after that point. Do you honestly think that he'll get offered a contract that would give us the highest possible compensation?

That even leaves out the relatively unlikely scenario that we finish in the same position or lower next year and that the AFL will keep the same free agency rules.

I was the chairman of the "Trade Minno" club this year. But I have to say that immortalmike is dead-on. Absolutely no way we'd be getting anything above Band 2 compo for Will - even if everything else fell into place.

This year was our best opportunity to get value out of Will's departure. But neither Will nor the club wanted it, so we keep building the old-fashioned way.

EDIT: To be clear, I'm not saying that Minno definitely won't walk. Just saying we wouldn't get Band 1 compo for him. For the record, I reckon the club that's the biggest threat of snapping him up is the Crows. They're desperate for a ruck and Minno's South Aussie (albeit a South Aussie who seems to hate SA!)

Doubt it, but it's possible.

I thought I already did. And it was.

Be that as it may he didn't.

Fair enough - it will just take longer to replace Jones and Cordy.

The prospect of getting two good tall forwards next draft was attractive to me.

Zero chance he'd go back from how he described SA to me :)

1. FA compensation is a lock to disappear this year

2. Wilbur will never have seen the kind of money he's going to get waved at him this time around

3. If we consistently play the kind of footy we dished up in the first half of the year..........who knows?

I think what we need is a spudodometer to measure true spudability. The measurements would be in increments of spuds with a spud reading of 10 spuds indicating that the player is so bad he is actually mash. Perhaps a flashy player who turns into a spud could be known as a Desiree, and older player who’s turned spud could be a King Edward.
I could go on....but it's making me hungry.

Surely we could up Minsons next contract, plus I don't see him as the type of guy who would leave for money. I reckon he'll do more than fine with his life after footy. I'd be staggered if he leaves

The last player we had like that was Ed Barlow.
I thought Barlow actually turned in some pretty handy performances half-way through 2011!!

The thing with Barlow is that he was never a great footballer. As far as athletic specimens go - unbelievable.

A 196cm / 93kg midfielder that beat Daniel Cross in the 3k time-trial!

Soft though...

BTW, on SEN last night, Brett Anderson (think that's his name - from Inside Footy) said that whilst he still thinks we will takes Bonts, he was nowhere near 100%.

To my ears he sounded less sure last night that he did a few nights ago when he did his phantom - definitely still a chance to take Aish.

I voted on this thread early in the piece and I felt that on paper that Bontempelli appeared to meet our needs.
Didnt seriously think that we would be in a position to pick him up, I assumed that he would be late first round or that we would go after Aish or Scharenberg. (After consideration I actually prefer one of these 2)
Didnt really know anything about Bontempelli, but I'll claim it if we draft him....lol ;)

Lot of boys playing for those two HB roles now. Should be interesting. Considering Pearce and Howard are probably playing for their careers, they will have to work bloody hard.
Still think Pearce is playing for Picken's role rather than JJ/Howard/Fuller/Murphy/Goodes'. Wouldn't be surprised if Darley was selected to play midfield either.

Agree Darley to be a mid.
Pearce wont get anywhere near Picken the way he's going and no one will rip a spot in the side out of Picken's hands without a massive fight (literally and figuratively).
Howard out Fuller in.

Fight to the death, Pearce vs Picken. Vale Pearce.

Also it's more than Howard out Fuller in. While I agree in that their positions are the same, Fuller has a big chance of playing AFL and actually becoming a part of the Dogs, Howard played 1 game this year. Massive upgrade on Howard.

To be fair, Howard's shown more than Fuller has at AFL level. Far too early to make that call.
