If we can't get fair value for him we must leave him on our list. It would be on him if he choses to sit the 2015 season out.

Unlike GWS, who are refusing to trade a player who wants to leave them, we are trying to find a way for Griffen to get to GWS without us being shafted.

Of course, yes. He has to stay on the list. But happy for him to sit out for the season.

Ok, say he says he wants to sit out next season, end of year comes and you want to trade him; a) he no longer has an obligation to you stay with you so PSD becomes an option or a Free Agent. You could still receive nothing only it's a year on.

Well then they win this one. 4 might get us Wright, it will get us a good player. 4 and 6 and then the picks in the 20's is a good hand. We still don't know what we get for Cooney or Jones.

But Griffen is a steal for that. I think it will make us more determined than ever to come even harder at them next year.

I don't agree it shows us falling over or the end of the world.

I think the point we differ on is what Griffen is worth in a trade.

1.He turns 29 next season. Maybe 2-3 elite years left, solid thereafter. Bodies can fall apart quickly and few players make it past 32 or 33.
2.Is coming off an okay season but well below his AA year.
3.Has injury concerns which impact performance (see point 2).
4.No leadership qualities that would really benefit the youngsters at GWS.
5.If this rebuild leads to a GF it will be after Griff has retired.

Pick 4 (or any pick for that matter) is a gamble but with 4 you would expect a 200 - 250 games player at high standard. IF we can get something on top of 4 I think its a great deal for us.

It's gotten to the point where he doesn't even try to hide his personal agenda against the club.

His behaviour during the Pickering interview was so unprofessional. His grandstanding comments these last 2 weeks not only about the dogs but footy in general have been absolute bullshit. Knows nothing and how he can get a paycheque each week on the basis of his contacts in the industry giving him "scoops" is absolutely incredible.

I have no problem with Griffen sitting out next year if we can't get an appropriate trade done. But to compound a shit situation and turn it into an unmitigated disaster would be very foolish.

If we keep Griffen on our list next year then players and managers will have well and truly received the message that we won't be bent over.

We have to stop being emotional about this. Griffen is not going to sit out for a year and, if he is, he would be the only player in decades to do so. No-one else has even threatened it, so we don't need a rule about it.

Missing a season for a 28 yo is a much bigger disaster than for a 19 yo. If GWS take Griffen in 2016 they won't be taking the same player. So much harder to get back to the same level at that age.

The balance has shifted too much to the players. FA comp or a PP should be manufactured if a rule like this was introduced. Its bullshit what is going with players just running the show and clubs being bent over.

The answer as to why Griffen would want sit out for two years, well the answer is $2m, in a career with maybe a 12 yr earning window.

There is a contract in place that protects the player and the club. If Griff refuses to play and burn all bridges, I would not put it past the club to pursue damages

And I expect Gordon is pointing that out to the AFL right about now. Your club, with your money - has created this situation. You can now fix it.

Griffen will be a free agent at the end of 2015 - he will not be entering the PSD.

Honestly, a lot of things have changed with free agency and players ability to trade etc. but for the captain of your club who has been with you for 10 years to say he wants to leave and only go to one club when he still has a year to go on the contract he signed, THEN say if you don't orchestrate a trade he will sit out for a year and not fulfil his contract, I'm just blown away.

The AFL would have to intervene if that were the case, otherwise what does a player contract mean anymore? I'd like to see a scenario where if a player decides to not fulfil his contract if the club has met all requirements receive a ban equivalent to the amount of years not fulfilled. So Griffen could sit out next year if he wants but the he has to sit out another year after that as punishment for breaking his contract.

The afl should be intervening right now to get 2 players who want to swap clubs, to SWAP CLUBS!

Pick 4 (or any pick for that matter) is a gamble but with 4 you would expect a 200 - 250 games player at high standard. IF we can get something on top of 4 I think its a great deal for us.

On the open market Griffen is worth 1st round and second rounder. Heard Melbourne's list manager, Josh Mahoney confirm this.

As GWS' first marquee recruit, somone wanting to come to them, when all the talk is about who would want to go there. Griffen is worth more than market value to them. In addition they have the capacity to pay.

In my view a lot of what Picks Griffen is worth is irrelevant, its Boyd or bust now I hope. (But I also hope we have been working on a backup plan with another 3rd party club)

How does Griffen get $2M for sitting out for two years? Griffen couldn't be paid for those two years.

Do you really think that GWS will offer $1M per year to a 30+ year old who has chronic back problems and has sat out of the game for 2 years? Why would Griffen even want to go to GWS if they promise him the earth and he ends up missing two years of footy, misses two years salary and ends his career as a laughing stock.
