Open to suggestions to any player that fits our lest better than Hurley. I can't think of one. Go.
I'd have Rance and May before Hurley.
Maybe even McGovern. All gun defenders.

With all due respect I think you're wildly overrating him as a forward to be honest, there's a reason he was moved back and Carlisle/Hooker tried forward.
I think Carlisle was more the stay at home type of forward Essendon wanted and had more goal kicking potential, but I remember Hurley playing several good games as a lead up centre half forward.

Always had a real presence leading up at the ball and seemed to know where to be for the bail out kick.

I actually think you're letting history cloud your memory, or maybe we just saw different games. There are plenty of other reasons why Carlisle would have been sent forward too.

Happy to agree to disagree but in my view he was always rated highly on reputation and several good games as a forward. He consistently hovered around the 20 goal mark and didn't really threaten anything higher. His set shots were also woeful if I recall correctly and I'm not really sold on adding another player with that particular weakness into the mix. He certainly provided a target around half forward though, I agree with that.

I'm not suggesting he was a terrible forward, just that if I was paying him $900K I'd want more than what he has offered as a forward over his career.

Hurley, Hooker and Rance are the top three key defenders in the comp imo and Hurley could be the best of all of them. Massively under rated. Would sell the farm for Hurley as I don't think any player in the comp would suit our list better. He is a decent forward but he is the best of the best as a defender. Him at one end and a firing Boyd at the other would be scary. Hurley is the kind of player u can build your whole backline around. Amazing 1v1 player and elite rebounder. He wins games off his own boot as a defender.

In 3 years as a forward (usually much higher up the ground too) Hurley kicked more goals than Jones has kicked in his career.

Also got 11 brownlow votes in those 3 years as opposed to Jones' career total of 2.

Interestingly in the past 2 years as a defender Hurley has averaged 2.5 votes as opposed to 3.7 as a forward.

Wasn't part of the reason Hurley stopped playing forward is his thumbs/wrists were turning to crap?

Yeah happy to disagree, and I'm not saying he's not a great defender.
But if I'm paying a guy $900k I want more than just a negating player.

I still think he would make a very good chf.

(for the record he averaged 26 goals in his forward years and his career conversion rate is a respectable enough 72%)

He's not just a negating player. The great defenders in the comp, Rance etc, are not just negating players, but break up and start attacks themselves.

I'm actually not keen on paying a key defender $900k either, I just don't think he's a $900k key forward either.

I love him as a player and think he'd fit us perfectly, but committing 20% of our cap to two players for five or so years when we still don't have an answer to the ruck situation, or a clear option to replace Murphy/Boyd when they retire in the short term, is not a smart list management decision in my opinion.

May have been mentioned, but Goldstein or Blicavs.. One for immediate impact in our weakest area, one completely fits our style and will only improve..

There would be lots of players who fit our list, but I assume Fronk means those who are realistically attainable. The free agent list is fabulously underwhelming this year, so there will be vultures all over the Essendon carcass.

Probably the wrong word to use.

My point is- our defence is built around a team effort with multiple payers zoning and combining to limit scoring and rebound the ball.

Our offense involves working through another teams defensive press and getting it through the goals.

It is always easier to defend than attack and having good tall forwards makes it infinitely easier.

That's why the kpf's get the big bucks.

Well that we can agree on.

That's a shame. I enjoyed his posts. The trick not to take all this silliness too seriously.

That's it Pann , you have to keep a sense of humour .
can't think of anything any of you could say that would make me take my bat and ball and go home !

I'm pretty sure he deactivated his account because, and of course I'm paraphrasing here, people are the worst.
Legit? That's shithouse. Amongst the best posters on this board.
People are the worst but most of the people on this board (and I mean all of BF here) are okay, just an annoying vocal minority.
