Melbourne and Pies will come hard for Marra and Naughton next year I think. Our planning on how them, Lobb, Darcy and Bruce work together is critical in them staying imo.

Geez I wish we would actually 'go hard' after young superstars for a change instead of other clubs coming at us.

Both are contracted until 2024 and (rumour only) Naughts is already one of of highest paid players, perhaps top 3.
Bruce won't go on beyond next year IMO

Absolutely we need to lock Marra and Naughton up long term. Would rather give them the money we are throwing at Lobb.

I’d hope with Dunkley going we have more than enough cap space to satisfy Marra and Naughton plus pick up Lobb types.

Some posters are complaining about us topping up with old players instead of guys in there prime, other posters are worrying about how we keep our young stars long term and other posters are asserting that our time is now and we need to get the best out of our gun midfields prime years.
Do the math people.

Most clubs lock up their stars and only lose them to other, out of your control things such as go home factor etc, I’m not worried about the likes of Naughty & Marra staying. Although along the way you’re not doing great if you don’t lose the likes of Dunkley etc for more money/opportunity than you can get at a winning club with multiple stars

The story is simple. Essendon offered him way too much money, so he tried to get there.
He had to sheepishly walk back into the club that he tried to shaft, and the simple fact is that he probably wasn't fully accepted back into the fold. Partly because the players hated what he did, coupled with the fact that he is a weird unit.
He latches on to Treloar because, who else is there? He said they bonded on common ground, but there was nothing common about their situation. One tried to shaft his club, and the other was completely shafted by his former team.
He spends half a season out with a shoulder and, because Bevo didn't want to hurt his feelings, was brought straight back into the team after recovering, to the absolute detriment of the team.
The club proceeds to have back-to back-to back finals wins on the road, absolutely unprecedented in the comp's history (so unprofessional) and the club plays off in the grand final, the 4th ever in their history. Meanwhile, Dunkley is nothing more than a passenger throughout almost the entire finals series, popping up for the occasional spoil or tackle.
He was absolutely carried to a premiership in his first year. Meanwhile, great clubmen like Mitch Wallis, Robert Murphy, and my boy Lin Jong, sit and watch this guy claim his premiership medallion, something he'd sell for a few bucks.

As for culture, every single other important player that was out of contract this year has re-signed. Clubs have down years. This guy is just money hungry. He is going to sign a long term deal with a club that's going to be playing out of makeshift rooms and random home grounds in a couple of years. Who cares, money. I just wonder who he is going to get free haircuts from now?
C'mon Jongy, it's not all bad, we still love your wrong shoulder strapping prank in the VFL decider

No players will leave their clubs for this imo unless it's still happening and been kept under wraps.

If Norf and Brisbane don't sack Clarkson and Fagan they are piss takes.

I'd expect our club to sack Beveridge if he had any part in this.
Interesting you say that. Is this alleged to have happened during the time Bevo was an assistant? He hasn't been mentioned as far as I know, and I can't imagine the fatherly figure we saw in 15/16 could possibly be involved in something as horrible as this

The media reports so far say the player named Clarkson and Fagan as being in the meeting. Doesn’t report anyone else being named. Given Gil has read the whole report you’d expect that if other serving coaches were named then they’d be standing down too

The allegations that were released today, were not in the report

They are separate reports/allegations

Yeah the Dunks chat is borrrrring, at least until trade week and proper discussion heats up.

What are the thoughts on Bowes, we know it hasn’t been the easiest environment to develop in and have seen good high draft picks who have struggled on the GC flourish elsewhere like Brodie this year. Obviously has talent, believe there’s been some injury concerns too? Good age, inside/outside midfielder with good skills who has played a little defence for GC.

Can’t say I know much about him but can he be that cheap defensive small we’re craving? Most good defenders at AFL level were juniors mids
I’m all in on Bowes if we can get him. Gun junior and has shown consistent improvement until 2022 when he had a tricky injury year. If he’s anything back close to his best I’d take him for sure. Don’t know if he wants midfield time though as he was drafted as a mid but became a back flanker.

Interesting. The media reports say the case was mentioned in the report but I haven’t watched the Gil presser so thanks for that. this will get very messy if allegations are being made that are not in the report.

I don't know what to say other than I hope he had no idea what environment he was working in.

Just to follow up, it is a bit hard to work out from the press conference. Gil says “more has come today that is not in the report” but doesn’t say what that is. He could be saying that there is more in the media reports than is included in the report, but he doesn’t say the substantive allegations weren’t in the report. He says that he’s had “conversations with clubs ..representatives of those accused” and “I feel, the way they will be approaching this investigation will be clear today”. it’s unclear whether he is saying “those accused” in reference to accused in the media, or accused in the report. I’ve only watched the press conference on YouTube, he may have made other comments. Alot to play out in this one!

I wouldn’t want Soldo in our forward line, he struggles big time there and that’s what’s seen him out of the team this year as Nank is very much a 90% game time ruck.

I don’t think anyone disagrees that a forward who can chop out in the ruck is a good plan, but the problem is putting all our eggs in this magical basket which barely even exists. Lobb is basically one of the only good forwards in the league who is more than serviceable in the ruck, and even he is only serviceable at both positions for the most part.

Most clubs either cop a loss up forward by playing a 2nd ruckman whose a bit s**t up there or they cop a loss in the ruck by having a forward who can give a s**t chop out. The problem with us is English hasn’t exactly been great in the ruck itself either, so we’ve practically completely lost the ruck all game because our own ruckman is only serviceable in the ruck himself and then the part timer comes in who is even shitter.

Most clubs that go with the part timer method have dominant rucks who can dominate for 80% of the game and only need to cover 10-20% of the game. We’re basically covering our ruckmans ass for 100% of every game.

Therein lies the issue. Now when we’re using someone like Cordy who is both s**t in the ruck and s**t in the forward line, it just seems crazy to not sacrifice whatever little upside he has up forward to at least gain the positive of a proper ruckman chopping out like Sweet?

Again if this perfect plan of English and a good second ruckman/forward works out then brilliant, but it hasn’t yet, and the frustrations have been around our complete inability to be flexible. It hasn’t worked out how we’ve liked and we just will not try other options, sure it might not be the best, most ideal situation but why not try a ruckman in the ruck and English forward/ruck (even if he’s better in the middle) just as an example.

The whole inflexibility around needing to find this perfect player or nup no one else is good enough - that’s the issue, and it has severely hurt us across several years
That’s perfectly summed up.

We’ve invested a lot into English and certainly paid for it on field early days, which is fine given his talent and he needed to be fast-tracked, but our lack of other options, or want to look elsewhere should Lobb fall through is a worry.

I’m still not convinced English is an out-and-out ruckman, but he could be an absolute weapon for us elsewhere if we had another genuine ruck.

Maybe he’s the fwd/ruck we’re searching for?

I don’t want to pile on North here this is an unfortunate situation for them but I just wanted to note the irony and the deep difficulty society has accepting harsh realities when self-interest is at stake.

Two days ago in the North Melbourne thread about AFL draft compensation the AFL was the most corrupt organisation in the world, out to get North, fold the club and never to be trusted. Since this Hawthorn story unfolded the main sentiment on their board is questioning journalistic integrity and denial of any wrongdoing until such time as something is unequivocally proven by a review sanctioned by none other than the AFL.

How's he go on the wing?
