That line of thinking is flawed. Not only is it a fact that Harvey is a better forward then the two you mention but he is also a much better midfielder.

If Butler retires then Nelson is an automatic replacement. Partington is in direct competition with the midfield group and on the basis of this season where he has not played any senior games it is fair to assume he may not be ready next season also.

It is about list quality and thus competition breeds success.

No, this is the Ross Lyon method of list building, bring in older players who aren't required at their current teams, stunt the development of your younger players, and end up with the mess that is Fremantles current situation (and St Kildas previously). It's short sighted, might help us win a an extra game or two next year (might), but isn't going to push us over the top into a contender. In fact in Fremantle's most successful season, which I'm sure you'll agree was 2013, they had 7 players 28 and over on their list, we currently have 11. We need to be blooding and developing young players, not bringing in grandpa's.

The last thing we need is another front runner , incapable of getting his own ball.
Harvey is clever, a good reader of play, knows when and where to run forward of play, has pace and good disposal, all positives.
He is also horrible defensively, almost 40 next year, can't win his own ball, often takes the easy way out and selfish.
An almost 40 year old outside mid with no other positional ability or versatility is the last thing this club needs.

Harvey will not stifle the development of our youngsters because we do not have a specialist forward pocket on our list, young or old.

What we do have is a recognised 2 year window whilst JJK, Shuey, Hurn, Jetta, Natinui, Mackenzie etc. approach their peak.

Harvey has kicked 35 goals this year splitting time in midfield. Harvey ranks 25 in afl at present. Has lost none of his skill or pace nor is he injury prone.

Had we had a young gun forward pocket interchangeable with Boomer at present I would absolutely agree with you.

He is not the 25th best player in the AFL, if he was the 25th best player in the AFL he would be playing with North Melbourne next year. As someone else has already said he's a front runner who is terrible defensively.
Damn right it's age bias, bringing in a 39 year old player on to a professional football team is insane.

I rather we blood in a karpany, tunbridge or play someone like SPP (if we get him), than have harvey. Theres a a strong chance that we might be a contender next season and after that we might even fall off. We need to blood kids at the same time as we are contending. Like simmo said earlier in the year, we need have one eye on the future.

You do realise that how many goals a player kicks in a season is not the sole determining factor in how good a player they are right?

He would be competing in a stronger forward line than North. Kennedy, Darling and Lecras have all kicked more than him not to mention assists as well. Cripps isn't far behind him in goals either but twice the assists.

Lecras beats him in contested possessions and tackles which is a bit of a worry.

Eagles list manager hopefully sees it this way in terms of priority trading:

1) Hogan
2) Lobb
3) McCarthy
4) O'Meara

The north delisters are not worth looking at.

Hogan and Lobb would attract our 1st, 2nd round pick plus a player like Masten.
McCarthy with a year out has becomer cheaper and would draw our 1st round pick.
O"meara - probably not worth bothering because Norf will throw a heap at him, plus Gold Coast would demand too much.

Agree with you that Simpson seems to like good ball users but I am not sure Gallucci fits that brief. Write ups on Gallucci is that the jury is out on his foot skills. Good but overstated by many. I spent 10 years in Melbourne so got to know some of the people behind the Avatars and people who really follow the games and not just read stats and read other people's views. Pity we did not play Vic Metro in Perth as I only got to see Vic Metro boys on TV. You miss a lot by only watching a telecast.

Gallucci's downside is he is seen as inconsistent, failing to be damaging with his foot skills, not sticking tackles, kicking looks great but too few many of his passes end up in scores, etc. There are positives but way too many negatives to be seen as elite and there are enough elite in the first round to think WCE will not fall into this trap. The other concern is that he really has not made a position his own (a little bit like Tom Lamb). A bit of a outside mid, half back, occasional inside mid. As you probably can guess, I am not keen on him as a 1st round pick. OK as a second round but not elite at anything to be considered 1st round material.

Sorry but this is one of the stupidest conversations I've been involved in on this forum and that's saying something. If you would seriously rather waste a list spot on an old man than on a player who could potentially be on the list for 10 years then I'm really glad you're not one of our list managers, and I don't rate them to begin with.
