I can't see us climbing out of the bottom 3 personally. Just think there's too much going on at the club right now, no one is focused, we've got Benny one foot out the door already and potentially some experienced players thinking the same.

Sadly I think we've got another 3 wins in us and that's about where we tap out

Smilie looks the goods, 194cm will get anyone excited, but early knock on him is potentially his kicking.

Excited to see O’Sullivan get a consistent run at it now. Been out injured, and started a little slow when he’s been back but we could really benefit from this tiny slide if the Smilie hype continues. O’Sullivan is a second-cousin of Sam Walsh, country boy boarding at Xavier. been the #1 of the class for the past couple years. U16s player of the championships, AA last year as a bottom aged. No real weaknesses besides being 182cm. Tough as nails, great mark above his head. Can play both inside and outside. Got a booming right peg. Has a step, and is explosive, a real Rolls Royce mid. Hate comparisons but maybe a little bit of Cotch about him. Hope he tears the championships up, but only so much he’s still there if we’re pick 2-3
Cripps is an ordinary kick too but a brute who gets his team going

I dont care who we get with the 1st pick so long as we bid the F*** out of the brisbane kid Ashcroft and Take Sam Lalor
Kid is a beast

Why would you bid on Ashcroft when we can do a wink wink nudge nudge deal with you so you end up with our first round pick and we get picks for bid matching?

Trade us some picks in the 20s and 30s that will get pushed out by bids - we give you pick 10(ish). Win-win for us, lose-lose for everyone else.

If Meehan can keep breaking blokes especially Lynch we won't win more than 1 at best.

Honestly wouldn't be surprised if something like this has already been agreed between the clubs

Whilst excited about a top 3 pick i have a gut feel that we will finish the year quite strongly with a 50/50 split of the last 8 games which unfortunately might push us up the ladder.
I’m the most optimistic bloke here and I can’t , I do think tho in a month with return of tt hopper and lynch we will be much more competitive,,, without winning ,,, maybe jag 1-2 from the 4 clashes v haw norf and gc

I've got us finishing 17th with 5 wins, 1 ahead of North, so pretty much our game against them in round 21 becomes the Pick 1 Cup.

We are 100/1 to win 4 more games this year. North no chance of beating any other team than us also.

I'd encourage our team to sit the long term injured players like Lynch and Taranto for the rest of the year but Louie will see to that without any interference.

I've tipped North to beat the Dogs at Marvel in an upset, the Eagles & Cats in Tassie and Suns at Marvel as Dimma can't win there. But they could just as easily only win 2-3 for the year.

I've got us beating Hawthorn in Martins 300th, then winning against North, Hawthorn again & Suns in the final game as we'll have players back by then.

you are correct if we do the pick trade with brisbane
but if its with another team then Ashcroft will 100% be on the cards

100%. Your first pick should be our absolute priority.

You have the highest rated father-son/academy kid so probably won't be able to trade up to squeeze a pick in before a bid (Suns, Blues and Crows could potentially) AND it'll likely be a top 10 pick AND we already have the points comfortably to do the deal. It's a perfect scenario for us and I'll be filthy if we let someone else take it.

Yeah our season is pretty much locked into finishing from 7th-10th I think, so as you say, no real chance to trade up ahead of a bid. If we somehow finish 4th bottom or something then it gets a bit more interesting but still don't think we'd be able to do it easily.

Tiges the first team that realistically might bid on Levi (assuming norf win the spoon) so just a logical deal to do.

Makes good sense on your end as well, stack the early draft picks as much as possible while you are down the bottom, particularly before Tassie enters the comp.

If we don't then I will melt. Surely our recruitment team isn't worse than our medical team?

Looking at some of the top mids like Finn O'Sullivan and Jagga Smith they don't look like they have much size to handle the big bodied AFL mids. However, I think footy IQ and silky skills will trump all, you can put on size and build endurance but you can't teach instinctive footy IQ and skills. I look back at Sam Walsh and he looked quite skinny, but look at him now. One of Carlton's best midfielders.

I worry that Smilie is only dominating and in contention for the no.1 pick because he's just a big man child that can outmuscle his opponents. Is he just another RCD??
Smilie is a wrong comparison to RCD. Smilie is a 30+ possession getter. RCD only averaged 14 at TAC level. I was horrified when we drafted him. Should never have been a first rounder. Smilie is more like Jason Horne Francis.

You missed the part about salary cap implications if we trade off all our players. We then need to pay huge sums to average players to make the cap.

The way to fix this is to bring forward senior players contracts. Eg pay TT a million next two years and 500k following 2 years. It’s allowed.

May 2024 Draft Power Rankings: Key position twins make their charge

1. Josh Smillie (April ranking: 1)
Eastern Ranges/Vic Metro
MID, 194cm
Talent League: 5 games, 28.2 disposals, 4.0 marks, 1.6 goals

Smillie is rocketing into football prominence, with each performance adding to his top pick credentials. His hulking size, explosive power and clean hands make him a midfield prospect with a huge ceiling, though he's also shown positional versatility at halfback. Though Smillie is six-foot-four, he hasn't proved a contested marking aptitude, but his rapidly evolving game has shown off goalkicking exploits and penetrating ball use forward of centre.

2. Finn O'Sullivan (2)
Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Country
MID, 182cm
Talent League: 1 game, 15 disposals, 2 marks, 4 tackles

O'Sullivan's campaign has been frustrating to date, returning from a broken thumb only to fracture another finger playing for the AFL Academy. It leaves him with just two injury-hampered outings to date outside of his school commitments with Xavier. At his best, O'Sullivan's power, aerial prowess and consistently damaging game style has him in pick one contention. Though he hasn't been able to show that to date, a stellar bottom-age campaign holds him in good stead.

3. Levi Ashcroft (3)
Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro
MID, 179cm
Talent League: 3 games, 27.3 disposals, 4.7 marks, 1.3 goals

Ashcroft is the star of a powerhouse Dragons outfit, building on his outside linking game this year by becoming a much-improved contested on-baller. He gets forward to hit the scoreboard, finds time and space where few can and shows elite work rate to rack the ball up all day. The brother of Will, Ashcroft is linked to the Lions through their academy and father-son ties.

4. Jagga Smith (5)
Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro
MID, 181cm
Talent League: 5 games, 30.6 disposals, 3.6 marks, 2.8 tackles

The mercurial Chargers midfielder has been a shining light in another dour year for the club, flourishing with added responsibility as its captain. Smith takes the ball from the inside to outside better than anyone in the draft and has the neat skills to release players into space by hand and foot. He sits second in the CTL for disposals per game.

5. Luke Trainor (4)

Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro
DEF, 194cm
Talent League: 2 games, 20.5 disposals, 5.5 marks, 3.3 tackles

The standout key position player of the pool has been Trainor, possibly the best performer from the AFL Academies hitouts. Trainor is a capable one-on-one defender, great interceptor and brilliant ball user out of the backline. He's been compared to Essendon's Jordan Ridley, but the right footer is more willing to take the game on and get up the ground, averaging four inside 50s per outing.

6. Sid Draper (6)
South Adelaide/South Australia
MID, 182cm
2023 SANFL U18s: 14 games, 21.6 disposals, 4.2 clearances, 0.6 goals

Draper made his long-awaited return from a shin fracture in SA's state trials on the weekend, playing a half of football through the midfield. His speed and endurance ties in beautifully with his hard edge at the coalface belying his size. Draper was a genuine Larke Medallist chance last season as a bottom-ager and recruiters haven't forgotten those sparkling carnival performances.

7. Christian Moraes (7)
Eastern Ranges, Vic Metro
MID/FWD, 183cm
Talent League: 4 games, 26.0 disposals, 6.3 marks, 2.3 goals

An elite aerobic athlete boasting snappy movement with ball in hand, Moraes excites around the forward line and as an outside midfielder. He's kicking bags of goals for a powerful Ranges outfit and forms a potent combination with Smillie out of centre bounces, though hasn't proved his inside grunt work can match his dazzling play in transition.

I love Trainor. He’s just class. A lot of Lever in him but much better kick and less w***er.

194cm who grew up playing forward but has become an elite intercept defender, a must have for all AFL sides.

His kicking is elite too. Imagine having Trainor and Brown bringing the ball out of defence? Daggers.

So composed and comes from unreal AFL stock in the grandson of Doug Wade.
