Mr. Reliable posed the question on his height and whether he would be too small at 185cm.

Ben plays a lot taller than 185cm and the bonus is he has very good smarts/forward awareness. Somewhat of a presence in the forward line, good on the lead and can use his body. Could ideally put on a bit more muscle but the key with Ben is his work on his agility and ball winning at ground level along with his defensive pressure.

Ever since he was a junior at Yarrambat, he has had a very good work-rate and discipline enabling him to get the best out of himself. He has done well at West Coast, by no means been poor. With his studies nearly over, and a fresh start back in Melbourne he is definitely worth a second chance or look at pick #69.

Do not underestimate the importance of having competition for spots in our forward line and the importance of a mid-size player who can play taller than he actually is. I've always been told Essendon and Carlton were front-runners over North, but I'm glad we're making a play for him. Worth a shot IMO.

The good thing is we have our picks before them. they have given 40 for Libba Jr. so worst case scenario for us is pick 51.

i would be happy to give our 2nd rounder for him, given we get melbournes 2nd rounder in the hale trade, or even our 2nd rounder if we somehow snare another first round pick.
he definitely has a lot of talent.
was out of favour with the coach and had limited opportunites.
would provide good comp for azz and benny but also, if one of goldy or mac go down, petrie can pinch hit in the ruck and mckinley is capable of playing full forward.
as i said before, 69 would be an absolute steal!!!

in terms of the dogs being keen, that's not surprising, between the bulldogs and the blues, they are keen on everyone! so sick of hearing about them!!

I think the positive for Ben is he looks like a very comfortable kick from 50m, not about accuracy but in terms of his range. We know Edwards and Warren are more 30-40m range, as they get more tired later in games they are no hope from 50m.

He also nominated North or Bulldogs as his preferred destination.

i'm pretty sure he is still contracted, but if he isnt, we wouldnt pick him up in the draft with pick 69, we would give them pick 69 in exchange for him.

Ease up!! 2nd round is a bit rich. You could put togther a highlights reel for just about anyone and they'd look good.

I'd probably do pick 69 as a speculator as he clearly has some ability, 51 at an absolute stretch. Let's not forget the guy couldn't crack a regular gig in the worst side in the comp.

No man, no.

I don't want to miss out on an Aaron Black for McKinley. I'm happy with 69 and even selecting him with pick 69, but I don't want to give up our 2nd or 3rd rounders for him.

From WC board, make of it what you will...

Rich man's Aaron Edwards for mine.

He might very well kick a heap of goals at another club but people will soon realise that just like Edwards, Paul Medhurst, Mark Williams and Mitch Morton - he's simply not big or versatile enough to be a genuine focal point and he doesn't have enough strings to his bow to be anything but

Because he can't play in that structure. He's poor defensively, poor below his knees, is not a high possession winner and gets in the way of key forwards.

He is shorter than many midfielders but has poor pace, average recovery at ground level and his best skills are "mark and kick" full forward type. And the kicking has been shizen this year.

He is an undersized tall forward who no doubt has natural goal sense but not the skill set to play as a medium forward

He kicked 42 goals in his first proper season, with a terrible midfield and little opportunity.

Has developed his work rate and defensive side, but has been the victim of poor coaching and lack of consistent opportunity as much as his own deficiencies.

In the right side could easily develop into a 45-50+ goal forward.

A solid contributor without being a star. Has a good mark and great opportunistic goal sense

It's a shame to see him go IMO. He's just a fraction too easy to spoil on the lead, due to a lack of pace and height. I hope he does well at another club.

These are all to familiar comments, let's not get too excited.

I also heard something similar. I heard that they were willing to let him walk to the draft if they didn't get a 3rd Round pick for him.

Kangaboy, let's not get excited, he isn't the Second Coming of Christ, though pick #69 would be about right. Really want him, but would not be offering anything better.

I agree, however;

If we drafted Matt Little at #69, im sure most people would be happy.

McKinley is an absolute bargain at 69, his down form COULD be attributed to wanting to come home, a fresh start could be the thing he needs, at the end of the day #69 is peanuts, he was probably worth a first rounder at the start of last season.

Do it.

Rumour on the FOX Sports website is that Bulldogs and Carlton are also linked to Ben, but that the Dogs will sew up a deal to get McKinley by Friday.

FFS, how many players do they want.

Watched "It's Hailing goals" last night and talked myself into demanding a first rounder. Once the euphoria wore off, anger kicked in, thinking why the hell hasn't he been churning out bags like that since!

Pykie,
i agree, was more aimed at suggestions of a second rounder being thrown at him.

42 and 30 goals in his first 2 seasons.
a poor return this year, but didnt have the confidence/support of the coach, plus west coast finished dead last and have a shocking midfield- especially ebert who cant hit a target to save himself, which obviously doesnt help out the forwards.
i dont think we need so much new young talent.
we already have a rich crop of young talented players, if we pick up 2 first rounders or a first and a second rounder that will be plenty!
plus, though i am a fan of benny warren/edwards, i find warren looses his feet/goes to ground to easily, and neither has been able to kick bags of goals.
we are desperate for someone who can kick 40+ goals in a season and mckinley has showed that so definitely worth a punt!

Let me get this straight.

McKinley is a great grab for his size and can take a shot on goal with an accurate boot from the 50/55mtr range. He is slow, lacks defensive pressure and offers next to nothing if the ball hits the deck. Essentially a forward player who has next to no potential of playing any other position.

This about right?

By no means next to nothing Groggy. Certainly his defensive pressure can marketdly improve and a weakness of his for quite a while has been his agility.

Really needs to work hard in that area just to add another dimension to his game.

I think his potential output, like most lead up forwards, is dependant on the quality of supply.

Eagles midfield has progressively got worse year by year with the loss of Cousins, Judd while injuries to Kerr and Cox and also the shitful decline of second tier midfielders like Embley and relying more on butchers of the ball in the place of quality players when going forward.

If you would graph the sources of inside 50s and from whom and compare it with the decline in the output of any eagles key forward you will probably notice reverse trends.

Cheers.

If his WAFL form this year was reasonable he might be worth a punt with a 3rd or 4th rounder.

If it was shit, you'd surely pass.

He was good for East Perth this year.

11 Games
140 Kicks
45 HandBalls
72 Marks
39 Goals
27 Points
21 Tackles

Career at East Perth - 58 Games (124 Goals / 105 Points).

For memory East Perth knocked off East Fremantle in the second semi-final and Benny booted 6 goals inside the 1st half to help them over the line.
