That's the point ,
Scraping together a few third and fourth round draft picks in exchange for Warnock , Lucas etc won't advance us up the ladder at all ... We've got to be more creative and daring !!

Nobody wants to lose Henderson , he's a beauty ...
But would Carlton benefit in the long run and be a better chance of top 4 by trading Henderson for say Boyd and GWS pick 4 ??

Of course there's no garruntee's but at the moment our list is way off the pace and things have to change !!

I reckon the reason Henderson's name has popped up out of the blue is because Rowe has been able to hold down the CHB spot so well this year. Henderson is a way better CHB than he is a CHF so a club like GWS who would be well open to doing a trade for a CHB would well and truly stump for him.

Malthouse may view Henderson as surplus to his needs in defence and would be prepared to trade him for some other quality items we are in need of.

Don't like it as I rate him highly but the concept seems quite plausible. If you are ever going to trade a player, best to do it when they are their maximum trade value.

Jamison , Rowe and White as our 3 tall defenders backed up by Watson and Giles .

Waite , Casboult and Boyd as our 3 tall forwards ...

Also we get to add 2 of the best young mids in the country with GWS pick 4 and our pick 6 .

Yes Henderson is a beauty but you have to speculate to accumulate !!

Henderson would not get us Boyd and 4. Best they might offer is straight swap.

St Kilda or Dogs would be the ones putting horses heads in Micks bed. Maybe Freo and Geelong too now that frawley is bound for Pies.

This has killed us for years !!

Every other club has at least two players they picked up in the 2nd & 3rd rounds who have turned out to be just about bone-fide guns.

If we are targeting Boyd and somehow manage to land him (which would be a massive get, but highly unlikely), then that would be a great start to restructuring our spine for the future. I would not want to give up Hendo to acquire him though as I feel like a forward line of Boyd and Casboult would be too slow and not overly great at applying defensive forward pressure. The way the modern game is going you really need to lock the ball in the forward 50 and not let it get released so easily. This is where Boyd at FF and Hendo at CHF with Waite there for 1-2 more years while we develop a third tall would be the perfect setup.

Our list has holes in it all over the park though and in my opinion, the midfield is the biggest priority.
We really need to address midfield rotations and outside speed because we are light on both quality midfield rotations and quantity.
We have too many inside types with average speed such as Curnow, McLean, Bell, Graham, Carrazzo, Cachia, Cripps, and Robinson (and that's excluding Gibbs and Murphy who are elite players but definitely not quick). Every team needs a few of these types, but when we take in all of Curnow, McLean, Bell, Robbo, and Carrazzo, we far too often get caught out running the other way. We need more speed and link up play to address our low uncontested possession count week in week out. We need quality and quantity.

Last year we made huge strides in list management by bringing in Docherty, Everitt, and Thomas for second round picks. We need a similar off-season again where we look to add midfield depth (with a focus on speed). Call it a rebuild of sorts, but we might be pleasantly surprised with the results if we don't look for a short term fix like we have in the past.

How can people say the midfield needs to be fixed first?

You've added Boyd to your forward line but there's just one problem ...

You haven't told us how we land him ??

Not disputing that we need to add more outside run, but...................

............Thomas, Yarran and Buckley with a monster pre season training beside Curnow, Walker, Judd or Bell would go
a hell of a long way to alleviating the perceived shortfall.

A fit and firing Daisy is elite by anyone's standards.
Yarran has improved, but still plays behind or ahead of the ball, his pace and skill set scream wing. Get a tank, may also
alleviate the recurring niggles if he gets genuinely fit.
Buckley's efforts have been great, but clearly has run out of puff late in games, not sure of what holds him back as seems
to have work ethic.

We have too many players seemingly taking the easy option. Injuries, natural tank, work ethic, fitness staff issues, what is
holding them back?

Walker, Simpson and Docherty also capable of filling the role, possible the Irish trio and Holman too.

I understand that we need to address our KPF stocks pretty urgently, but if we have a midfield that has speed, run, and carry with plenty of possible rotations through there, then we can be highly competitive. We've seen that this year already with games against Hawthorn, Geelong and Fremantle and that was without plenty of outside run and depth. Maybe grab a Jacksch type through trade if we don't have to sell the farm and then focus on our midfield woes through the draft. We have a history of looking for short-term fixes rather than hit the draft hard. Look at Saints last year.. they grab Billings, Dunstan and Acres. They don't have a great KPF outside Riewoldt and yet they realize the midfield is key.

That is the exact problem. I don't expect us to land Boyd because we will have to give up players that in our position of little depth, we can't afford to lose. I'm honestly not sure how we would get that trade done. I would start by offering a combination of Casboult and picks. Walker would be the one I would trade as we can cover his lose with the continued development of Doc and Bucks. However, someone mentioned he may not be willing to be traded. Hendo for mine should be placed on our untouchable list.

All those guys you mention would add some great run to our midfield, but leave holes off the half back if moved further up the ground. Thomas will hopefully move into the midfield next year with a big preseason. Bucks should be left at half back, Yaz is capable for bursts in the midfield but I would also leave him off the half back or occasionally up forward. Doc is the one I can see developing into a midfielder of that lot.

The injury thing.. not sure if we have just had rotten luck over the past few years or whether we have quite a few injury prone types. Our senior players are also still suffering mentally from our woes of the last decade. We need to turn this around to start building a winning culture again, particularly in close games. These players need to drive the standards for our younger boys.

Sell Hendo, how idiodic can someone be? Hendo is a jet, whats the point of trading out like for like? ie Boyd... Id love to get him as much as the next person but giving up our best KPP for another isnt making any ground. Drafting and Trading is a science and it would seem we have someone at the helm whos starting to tick the boxes. Get Jaksch (KPP)for a 2nd draft Laverde (speed skill mid)with our 1st and we start to look ultimately better, throw in a free agent or another Doc,Dre like trade and a full preseason into the boys and we will make great leaps forward. Realistically we are probably another 2-3 trade periods away from adding the depth and filling the holes. We arent going to fix the team with 1 blitzkrieg trade!

And personally ill keep Casboult too! Great hands good tank he is the perfect CHF.

We embrace the draft for a few years and continue to bring in quality kids who will rejuvenate our list. Players that Malthouse and Co. believe can take us to out next premiership.

I don't think anyone is disillusioned enough to think we can trade our trash for treasure, but even a late pick may strike gold on occasion.

We can't delist all the players we don't see fit to take us to our next premiership all at once (thanks to years of inept list management), but we can build on the start we made in last years off-season and continue to turn over our list over the next few years. We as Carlton fans have been guilty of demanding success every year without a long term vision of what it takes to build a winning team. It takes time and I feel most of us will embrace that if we see the club is taking time to do things right from now on in a list management sense.

If we can make another value trade like Doc and Everitt.. Brilliant. If not, hit the draft. Trading away players like Hendo would literally be reserved for a deal we can't refuse type scenario.

Would also make sure that keeping Hendo is a priority. He has had a very interrupted year and has still shown genuine talent at both ends of the ground. A true key position swing man...more valuable than single key position player. He has moved from Brisbane to Vic partly to be closer to family. Not sure that he would want to move outside Vic in a trade. The only thing I have against Hendo is durability. He seems to gather a lot of injuries. At least these have seemed to be a host of different things rather than recurring injury issue that might cause long term concerns. Must keep!
