If we can't work a trade for him we should retain him.

Why? We have so many players of his type and most of them are better than him.

We have far too many guys in their mid to late 20's who are borderline best 22 on our list. Mitchell, Monfries, Butcher, O'Shea, Stewart, Lobbe, Sam Gray. Arguably Schulz and Carlile too as age starts to catch up with them.

Every team needs a few of those types, but when you have as many as we do you're in list clogger territory. We need to start clearing out a few of them, and for mine O'Shea would be one of the first ones out the door.

At this stage I'd clear out Mitchell, Lobbe and either Stewart or O'Shea (not both).

I'd probably cut both (maybe re-rookie Stewart), but if it was a choice between the two then Stewart every day of the week for mine. O'Shea is nowhere near reliable enough to be an AFL defender.

We should be focusing on getting the next crop of youngsters in this draft. Keep all picks this season, or swap some around.

Do you think cutting both would leave us with not enough depth down back though? Could work if we re-rookied Stewart as you suggested. Undecided on which to cut though - O'Shea's top line is better, but his worst is deplorable. Stewart's top line isn't as good, but he's more consistent.

Hombsch, Carlile, Trengove, Jonas, Pittard, DBJ, Krakouer, Clurey, Austin, Bonner, Hoon if we keep him. Hartlett and Broadbent rotating through. That's plenty of depth.

I don't have O'Shea as one of the first out the door but I can understand if others do. I'm sure a fair few of the names you've mentioned will move on, it's just a matter of how deep we cut.

We need to snag a quality midfielder. We need to trade a decent player to get a decent mid in too.

It's time to trade the inconsistent players that some call stars.

Aggressive trading for needs is what is needed this year. Like when we traded Eagleton for Monty. No one wanted Eagleton gone but that was win-win.

Sigh. Our midfield is so average atm.

It actually isn't, and the stats show that.

We just need more class and depth.

Yes, a lot more class in the midfield. Gray and ahchee don't cut it. And we never run wingard through there much.

So I still think we need more midfield talent.

I've heard it mentioned in media, and on the Swans board that Nankervis is gettable. Lines up with what I imagine.

Good list fit for Port. A bruiser of a ruck/fwd. And a beauty of a set shot.

Handles like a mack truck however
Can't wait for the trade period.

We need to stop the Rohan talk. As I mentioned the other week, he's Jake Neade without defensive pressure. If you only watched his highlights reel you'd be gagging for him, but if you actually watch his week to week output you wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole. Had a great game against the Hawks then backs it up this week with 8 touches (4 effective) and a behind. If you look at his bottom 2/3rds output (take out the two Hawks games and the GC game) he is averaging 8.6 disposals (5.5 effective), 0.5 goal assists and 0.3 goals. All this from a guy who should be in his prime at 25 years old. That is exactly the sort of inconsistency that is killing us at the moment and the last type of player we need to be recruiting. He would be great icing on the cake at a Hawthorn where his 1 good game every 3 or 4 weeks could be great, but would be an absolute killer to our side that needs depth players putting in consistent effort.

All this goes back to the type of player we need, which are consistent output types that don't have to be brilliant flashy players. Boak, Gray, Hammer, Wingard, Pittard and even Impey these days can cover that game breaking class a good team needs. Unfortunately it's easy for one or more of those guys to be down because of the lack of consistent support. This is what I was really hoping Ah Chee to deliver this year; just a consistent 20 disposal 4 or 5 tackle type player. Didn't have to do anything outstanding all that often, but was able to be that constantly turning cog that helped keep our premiums in the game. It's something that Sam Gray has been able to do at SANFL level really well. He's never the most damaging player, but his ability to keep racking up the ball just gives more opportunities for guys like Summerton, Toumpas, Tom Gray, and Reynolds to be able to do their thing and break the game open. Unfortunately he hasn't been able to consistently translate that to the same AFL form.

Would anyone look at Brent Mcaffer as a free agent ? Has been good for Collingwood in the past, not so much at the moment but could come cheap.

Exactly this. It wholly depends on how deep we cut, and if KT's comments are any indication - not deep enough.

I think potential delistings/trades will come from any of:

Mitchell
O'shea
Colquhoun
Monfries
Stewart
Butcher
Carlile
Schulz
Ah Chee
Houston
Hewitt
Toumpas (unfairly)

I'd be toying with the idea of a Broadbent trade too.

Of the bigger name players on that list, Carlile is particularly vulnerable though contracted. Schulz I think may have ended his career on Sunday, likely Butcher too same with Ah Chee. I'm unsure if we will take the risk with delisting both Schulz and Butcher in the same year though.

3 or 4 years ago I'd be a bit interested. He's 29 next year and while he's decent he's not good enough to justify bringing in a player of his age when we need a minor list overhaul.

I really think it would be extremely unwise to delist both Schulz and Butcher, and Schulz simply won't offer anything next year so I think Butch gets another 1 year contract.

Carlile will stay on the list, may bring him in for a few games v some gorilla forwards, or if our defender stocks get obliterated again next year but his AFL time looks to be very limited.

I'm very much with you on the Broadbent trade. It's unfortunate that he's an SA boy that loves the club as trading a player like that can sting player culture, but if handled well is probably the move we should make. Would be kinda sad to see him do well at another club - which I think he would, as he certainly isn't bad at Port - but he's a bit surplus to needs at the moment and the trade value we could get from him would help bolster our weaker areas.

You'd think we could get some trade value from Arch and O'Shea. O'Shea needs to go regardless, but if we only get scrap offering for Ah Chee, I think it's better to keep him on the list for another year.

We are heading for a pick that lands us an A grade mid in the draft. Not sure there are trade targets out there that would be a better option?

If viewed as a HBF i would agree he has would offer the greatest return in a trade. That said we could always play him in his natural position in the midfield for an extended period of time.

With Howard down, one would suspect Schulz will get one more year (rightly or wrongly), unless we are going to delist him and then try and jag FA or trade in a forward from elsewhere. Not sure there is much out there of note that we could get.

It is very difficult to cut as deep as some are saying above, but we really do need to be ruthless this year.

All of the following should be moved on (whether trade [unlikely] or otherwise):

Mitchell
O'shea
Colquhoun
Stewart
Butcher
Carlile
Ah Chee
Houston
Hewitt

I thought he was moving more into the midfield earlier in the year to become that 20 touch reliable cog but he seems to have slipped back the field as Ah Chee and S Gray came in. I'm more convinced he's an AFL player than I am of Gray and Ah Chee at this point.

Oh he can definitely play. I'm just of the opinion that he's a bit surplus to needs and doesn't really bring enough to our side. And because he is quite a good player, we'd be able to trade him for something pretty nice in return which could be used to bolster our depth. I'm not saying get rid of him for a packet of chips.

Broadbent would get us a late round 2 - or round 3 - pick.

We need to shake up our list, and show our squad that no one is safe, but if hes the only one we move on, it will be a fairly insignificant trade period really.

In saying that though, it would at least fast-track Bonner and Snelling getting some games.
