All I'm reading so far is that we are focused on ruckmen this trade period. I can't understand this. Surely there is some young rookie ruckman running around in the reserves somewhere in the country who is willing to fill in for one year. I've already heard a few names of young reserve ruckmen thrown around... Sign them up already and focus on midfielders! All we need is someone who can provide a contest in hit outs. Some young rookie ruckman with some height about them is all we need.

Just seems like we are wasting a trade period focusing on finding a stop gap ruckman who is likely going to be gone after one year anyway, instead of putting all our energy and efforts into luring top rated midfielders.

Crows have a heap of them and searching for a Shuey type which is harder to get. We already have Shuey should be easier to build around but doesn't seem it ATM.

Like who? If they're not best 22 for the crows odds on they won't be best 22 for us. Kind of like the people lamenting the loss of Koby Stevens.

I'm opening up to the idea of schrimshaw. if he doesn't make it as a midfielder he will at least become a creative flanker/wingmen.

I know People here go on about Sheppingham but IMO we don't get enough drive out of our midsize defenders. Looking at the dogs,Giants, crows and hawks, they get plenty of drive from their flankers. For us its only Hurn that does it at times. We need one or two flankers that can accumilate the footy and provide us a bit of drive out of defence. At the moment we lack a JJ, shaw, Williams, Smith, Liard and etc. If we getmore drive out of defece we could actually reduce the number of pure wingmen in our b22 and play more balanced players. I would realy love us playing cole or duggan in defence over butler and give them the license to take the game on. Even Jetta or Welligham should be given a similair role to JJ as both have some speed. If jetta can work on being accoutable then he will be a real weapon off half back.

In fact why wouldn't they just agree to high compo on the understanding that when the shoe is on the other foot, the other side will do the same for them?

Every player has a value, whether a player can use his right as a free agent to move clubs does not change his value. Club losing player should be compensated accordingly to players worth. How is that weird for you?

The club receiving the players isnt losing anything by allowing a higher pick to go to the club than what the player is worth...or are you saying ditch free agency and make it trades only?

I am saying a player has a value, if they want to leave then the club deserves to be compensated for what they are worth.

Being aggressive during the trade period doesn't just mean paying overs for players just for the sake of having some new faces around the club.

Free agency is also a reason why we can't just "rebuild" by getting rid of everyone. Players that are left will no doubt be our best players and they will think "hmmm well I won't win a premiership here, might as well go. Don't want to wait 5 years".

Draft well, develop well and continue building. Add players from other clubs where opportunity comes. If not, draft and ensure u draft well.

We can't just tank as gaff shuey etc will just want to leave when they hit FA. That means rebuild will take even longer and I am not interested waiting 6 years till team is competitive. Even then no guarantees as the likes of Carlton north, Essendon have found out.

I think you are a little over reacting.

Perhaps a little But I guess I just saw a midfield this year that was stale and in need of some additions this year and kind of hoped this trade period would be a big one for us. Seeing us being very dormant while Hawthorn, Geelong and Adelaide are looking likely to get in MORE gun mids has me feeling a bit pessimistic about our chances of forging a premiership winning midfield. Let's hope big things are being planned behind the scenes and that our young midfielders have big preseasons.

I went to 15 games this year - 11 home games, an away derby, two interstate games and that final that was inexplicably cancelled. Watched the remaining games on TV. So I've seen a bit of them this year.

I'm all for adding extra midfielders, particularly some top end talent, but at the right price. Rockliff is overrated, Barlow is cactus and there's not a hell of a lot more available. If we want depth as opposed to superstars then I'd happily look at guys like Ellis-Yolmen and Ah Chee.

Otherwise, hopefully we'll have full uninterrupted years from Sheed and Redden, better output from Jetta, and improvement from Duggan and Partington, on top of whoever we get with pick 12. That's where I see our midfield improvement coming from.

we need depth as well as stars in the middle. in all seriousness, we only have about 4 guys in there who cut it.

Is that not what the AFL are doing? AFL are providing compensation for player leaving so it's just a trade isn't it. Just that it's a bad deal.

Is the club paying it in your example or is the AFL just creating an extra pick as they currently do?

I'm not opposed to removing FA but the reality is the players pushed hard for it and got it. They wanted more control over being able to move clubs, which isn't surprising given the previous system was very restrictive and possibly even illegal in terms of restrain of trade.

I'd rather FA compensation simply be removed and the compensation is the cap space the club now has to recruit another player themselves. But that could potentially **** over clubs down the bottom of the table.
