Took the extended long weekend, and decided to get a Cats fix and head to training today.

The team started with some basic running and ball work to warm up, and then played a low key scratch match of sorts.

The group was split into two sides, similar to that of last years intra club i.e the best forwards playing on the best backs, and midfield group going head to head with one another. At the other end, the young forwards played on the young defenders, generally those that are expected to play VFL for the majority of the year. Blake and West did the ruck duties.

I think the forward structure for the team wearing the orange bibs was a sign of a proposed big man structure this year. Ottens and N.Ablett played as dual full forwards, Kent Kingsley played up the ground as the CHF or half forward flanker. He would start at 30 - 40m from goal then lead up the ground. KK was actually quite good, and used his pace to great effect. He was really clever, and would often find space running back toward goal. He didn't take one set shot though???

Most impressive were the usual suspects Kelly, Bartel, Ling, Mooney and Hunt. But the surprise packets were Prismall and Owen. Prismall spent most of his time oposed to Milburn, and whilst Milburn got a few kicks in the back half, Prismall was extremely impressive breaking lines, and using his pace to run hard toward goal into open space. Owen played at FF for the VFL forward line, and was a shining light. He is quick on the lead, and good overhead. He will play Wizard Cup, and after towelling up Spencer, Egan went on to him, but couldn't negate his pace either. He is an exciting prospect. But I thought the same of Garth in the first intraclub last year, and we all know his fate, so will just wait and see I guess.

Both teams had two distinct varying game plans. The white team, were playing the Fremantle huddles when taking the ball from defence through the midfield. It creates space inside 50, but is super short and super ugly until the ball gets delivered. It will be interesting to see when Bomber uses this style of play in the year. I hope not to often! The Gold Bib team played a more traditional style of play, that we have seen for the last two years. There is a distinct importance being placed on moving the ball quickly and having plenty of scoring opportunities. After 6 minutes without a goal Bomber screamed at the players that "it was too slow, and 6 minutes without a goal was not good enough." All in all not too much to write about this early in the year, as they still have many of the early season cobwebs to blow out, before the free flowing play begins.

Notable absentees King and Wocinski, who didn't compete in the game type drills, but did full running and kicking with a fitness staff member. King looks good, and really fit. S.Johnson, Callan, Playfair, Harley, Stokes and Varcoe were all on light ball work and restricted running. Varcoe is full of condience and looks like he could fit straight into 50 cent's new movie, or an episode of pimp my ride. He had the hat on backwards and has a real swagger when he walks. He doesn't seem shy, in fact he seems like he will talk to anyone who will listen.

HIGHLIGHTS Prismall and Owen, expect to see them play 1's at some stage during the year. Kelly moving smoothly through the middle, and Otto taking a strong contested grab against mooney one on one then going back and slotting it from 45 in front of the past players. Good to see the finger is ok, and hopefully a sign of things to come.

Thanks for yor excellent report ezbian, i took the liberty of posting it on Cats Claw, hope you don't mind.

Great report. Can't wait to see Owen. The bloke's obviously a freak, recovering from an anterior cruciate tear in the space of 24 hours!

I really think Bomber's doing the right thing with a super-focus on moving the ball in quickly. When you don't have star forwards it makes it so much easier for the likes of Kingsley and Playfair if they can get the jump on their opponents.

How were Koulariotis and Mackie?

Koula was Ok, but played on Ling from memory so was overshawdowed a bit.

Mackie I thought was ordinary, which is disappointing. He did kick a goal, but there was some undisciplined stuff from him. He had Corey Enright, and a couple of times he let him run through the midfield and up to his half forward without any pressure.

He coped a bit of a spray from one of the midfielders, (Bartel I think), it was good to see it come from a teammate and not a coach.

I forgot to mention David Johnson was a stanout as well. Great rebound from half back flank, and went into a couple of stoppages as well.

Great report there Ezbian ,

Couple of things , You mentioned Owen. You make him sound another good pick by Welles.
I was quite disapointed we missed on Ben McKinnley.Im not sure if we had of gone for him if he was there at 31 but he went at 29 so we went West and then went into Welles bag of picks and pulled Owen's name at 35. Foe some time I feel we have lacked another quality Mid forward player like Dog , hopefully he can be the man.

Interesting observation on the game plan practice. Seems to me that that Bomber banked some of that day against the Dockers and he is putting a lot of effort into being able to break sides that try that on us and so could that negative game plan not so much be ours as what other might try to stop us.

Again , I like what you report on Varcoe. I want a guy that is so confident that he feels he belongs, that wants big time footy , that wants to back himself , that wants to be the match winner

The addy had a report on this game also, and seemed to think it was Todd Grima rather than Stephen Owen doing the damage up forward. Were also impressed for Ottens and Prismall for what it's worth.

It could have been Grima, my limited knowledge of the new guys made me assume it was Owen.

In relation to the injury I was talking to Stephen Wells and he doesn't know anything about an injury, so that would suggest it is a lie.

I do apologize if I got it wrong, either way Owen or Grima it was impressive.
