Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

he has had it too easy
plays on natural ability and needs to work a lot harder

but it is funny that the blake fan club is so unforgiving on other geelong players

he needs a rest, and needs to train hard off the field

i would give motlop 2-3 weeks
bundy should be used as the mids each have a rest,

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

Or even Shannon Byrnes once he gets going. I have not always loved him but my gosh he has an honest crack and can find the footy.

Shagger is the invisible man when there is some heat in the game, particularly in finals. Would much prefer to develop Christiansen than persevere with the indirect and error riddled game style of Byrnes.

Sure, but our small forwards always used to go missing when we were getting screwed.

I thought generally Byrnes was of more value to us last year than Stokesy, and he's doing much better with more opportunities this year.

If Byrnes can get his fitness up, like the rest of the guys who used to just play small forward, he'll get a run thru the middle too, and be able to get involved in games more. I always thought even when he couldn't get the ball he would still run out games, try to effect a tackle etc..

If Trav can't lift soon, a fit Byrnes could take his spot, and keep him out. Amazing considering the difference in natural ability.

I hope Bundy comes in this week as well. Hopefully not for Selwood, but we'll see.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

I have confidence the Club will take whatever is the best path to get TV back on track. Seems little doubt he will not be in the 1's this week though as under CS I can't see us carrying passengers beyond what's reasonable. He has been given time and offered the sub role but the capacity to get involved isn't there at the moment so the paradigm has to change. We also need to reward effort from guys busting their guts trying to get into the 1's or risk the "spot for life" BS that will eventually bring us down.
Looks like Christensen , Motlop and Byrnes are playing well so we do have options.
At the end of the day a bit of tough love for Tommy and TV will either make or break them but is what we need to continually improve.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

I haven't a man love for him as some have, but if we judge impartially as I try to, he shouldn't be carried any longer, time to give another an opportunity.
6 possessions and a thank you Pods 'joe the goose' goal says it all, not enough.
Then subbed, thankfully releasing Milburn
Couldn't see him impacting against the Saints, even if there was a next week, their backline's pretty tough and hard.

Varcoe's record in tough, physical encounters is not good (no surprise there). We can't afford another non-appearance against St.Kilda.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

It's maddening that it always seems to take some heat for Varcoe to produce what we know and have seen that he is capable of. Give him a kick up the arse and he has another game like he did against Carlton. Then he seems to coast again. Really thought he'd turned the corner with his second half of last year, but it's just been a terrible 2011 from him so far. His spot should not be guaranteed. I think he needs a stint in the twos to give him a much needed wake-up call.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

If he isn't dropped this week I would be very surprised. Pretty telling that he was substituted - I would think Scott has run out patience by this point. Needs to get his hands on the ball and work much harder to earn his spot back, and he probably needs a couple of weeks at the least, just like Hawkins.

To be more accurate, another quarter like he did against Carlton. Was brilliant in the third, but absolutely unsighted apart from that.

He's had enough chances, for weeks on end he's been avoiding contests and skirting the action. Christensen is knocking the door down in the seconds and should be rewarded.

I think Scott sending him off for Milburn was the final straw. He started Varcoe as the sub against the Dogs and he did nothing, this week he was sent off for the sub. There's only one further step and that's the reserves.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

Bundy will come into the side for the loss of Selwood and this "may" very well spare Trav relegation to the VFL.

Do we not have enough depth at the club to promote another player to have a go - if Varcoe's lack of form warrants some time in the twos ?

I know we have a few injuries - but maybe there is another player worthy of having a look at.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

I thought Varcoe's start to the game was good and heading in the right direction.
Just for a second I thought he was back, but then went missing as he has been doing all year.

Back to the 2's and give a youngster a go.

He even did a run down tackle, something we haven't seen him do this year.

"YOU MUST BE jOKIN!" I SEE IT, BUT I DON'T BELIEVE IT!

Honestly, I give up on this thread, you win! car'n Varcoe~ you're numero uno.

You'd reckon he'd be Irish.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

We must be kidding ourselves if we believe we've got a great group of youngsters coming through, otherwise how's this guy getting a game.

I suppose the win/loss ratio says it all, there's a big jump to seniors.

I wouldnt be suprised that the late change is Bundy in for Trav and Wojak the sub - his speed and freshness could be a key if the game is tight later on.

Surely we have to put in a guy that has form ahead of one out of form, especially without selwood being in the team.

Unless there is another player that is in doubt that we dont know about.

Edit: love the "Hitman" quote too df!! :D

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

Anyone else hear that Christensen is facing a fitness test for his hip?

Also, I heard that sometimes players don't think they'll get picked in the seniors the following week after being subbed off. There's a possibility that some players are as surprised as anyone when they get named in the seniors again. Perhaps the loss of Selwood has forced the coaching staff to reconsider giving our favourite player a well-deserved rest just when he may have been expecting a week off.

Did anyone else hear Chris Scott say after the game vs Hawthorn that Varcoe has increased his work load this year? He has been working harder than ever, apparently, not that everyone notices or appreciates the jobs he gets given to do.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

Varcoe is running up and down the ground like a mad man. There is no doubt about that.

I think Menzel should sub this week.

Have you just flown in from a long overseas holiday?
Or have they let you out for the weekend?

Whose been dropped after being subbed off during a game this year ?
Hawkins might be the only one

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

maybe chris scott wants a loss vs the saints so we dont get ahead of ourselves hence having travis "seagull" varcoe in the team again

i love the guy but come on he aint right and should be playing vfl
