Triple J

It's better than commercial radio, but only by a small fraction. I used to love it 8-10 years ago when I was growing up, it played great music. I think there is too much Australian content that is not up to scratch. Less international acts that are small here get less airplay.

Bands that get played on full metal racket should be played more at other times. Radio is irrelevant these days, youtube has really taken over. You can request your song at will.

I like Triple J I was a pretty heavy listener over the 2004-2010

Have barely listened just because I haven't listened to radio that much this year.

But I really just think this is a bunch of rebelling against the 'hipster' movement currently taking place. I'm not a fan of hipsters but I'm not going to stop listening to Triple J just because a bunch of kids start popularising the music which I have an interest in.

The quality that Triple J has been playing is always dependant on the strength of the music put out that year. They do a lot of great things for the industry & are a necessary part of it.

A lot of the whining on here sounds like a lot of people from (in their minds at least) it's mid 90s hey day. You might be right or you might just be growing out of the station.

If I choose to listen to the radio I either choose Triple J or if I have access to the net NME's radio stream.

Try talking to us and socialising, we're not that bad.
In a music sense, Gen Y is horrible. THis is the generation that has pushed garbage like Coldplay, KOL, Kasabian not to mention large amounts of pure pop garbage to the top of the charts. It's horrible.

Shaddap You Face by Joe Dolce was number one for weeks when I was a teenager.

Duncan by Slim Dusty the same.

In my parents era - How Much is that Doggy in the Window ?
Does Your Chewing Gum Lose it's Flavour on the Bed Post Overnight????

Every generation puts shit at the top of the charts.

As Del Amitri put it.
"Every generation throws a hero up the pop charts."

And every generation has the one before them calling them out for some reason

Yeah, starting to dislike JJJ myself also. All they play now is Aussie Hip Hop and this 80's esque pop rock shit. The only reason I listen to it is because it's better than the commercial stuff.

Going to start channel surfing, maybe pick up on a winner.

I am Gen Y. And I love Slim Dusty*. Just find it really disappointing that the 'big' music festivals targetted to younger audiences are full of rubbish, with Soundwave being the exception. BDO is horrible, except for Soundgarden, Pyramid is a collection of "why would you bother", ditto Falls. Massive soniamdisappoint.

*Maybe not love, but I like my country.

Think you'll find that was Paul Simon, but I agree wholeheartedly.

Everything is shit now and was better 10/20/30 years ago.

Although the Falls Festival lineup is average this year, for the last 4 or 5 years it has been really quite good.

The Splendour lineup is usually amazing, this year I wasn't much of a fan though.

Although not 'bigger festivals' Laneway is good once again and Harvest had a great lineup.

You bag out new music acts then talk about you liking country?

I'm not sure how you expect the festivals to give more music aimed at the older listeners? Bring back old washed up acts? I like older music as much as anybody but more than one or two comeback bands per festival is too much.

Of course it was - How embarrassing ! :o Even when I am sure of myself, I normally do a google check before putting something so affirmative down. Got lazy !

Quite a coincidence though because I remember JJJ being criticised for playing stuff from the Graceland album because it was too mainstream for what was supposed to be an alternative station.

Gracelands was a ground breaking album, alternative (in the true meaning of the word) and one of my favourite albums of all time.

Simon exposed the world to South African music like no one ever has before. If you can get the DVD of the Gracelands concert in Harare, amazing, Mama Africa, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and being a vet of the anti-Apartheid movement very moving. I still tear up at Hugh Masakela singing Bring Him Back Home, and if you don't feel something at the end when they play Nkosi Sikelel' Iafrika you must be dead.

Magnificent album. One of my favourite of all time. Which makes it even more galling that I got the reference wrong.

I'll give you Harvest, that was alright.

Very few talentless hacks make it in the country scene (there are a few exceptions - Kasey Chambers being a notable one, she's horrible) in comparison with the pop garbage dished up regularly.

I suppose I can't blame the festivals for giving people what they apparently want, and I'm back to blaming my own generation for being shit again. At least Soundwave gives me a good festival to see guys like Slipknot, Gojira, machine Head, Alter Bridge et al.

Rock and metal mostly, with a smattering of old-school punk (Pistols, Clash, Ramones, BR etc). Not the kind of things that get played on most radio stations (at least back home), or at most festivals these days, as there is a growing dance/hip-hop element that I find shitfully boring.

Oops, missed the current bands part.

Love Slash's solo work, Alter Bridge, Gojira have some cool stuff coming out of France, Megadeth, Stone Sour, QOTSA, Slipknot, don't mind Loaded, The Darkness.

Ah fair enough. Seems to be a bit of a narrow taste you have, but although I don't like metal myself, I never bag out people who like metal. Is a type of a music I could see how people could think was good. With tastes like that you can't assume, or even slightly expect festivals to be tailored to your likings.

My tastes may seem narrower as most of the music I listen to is from bands that are either no longer around, or only perform sporadically - Zeppelin, Sabbath, GnR, Van Halen, AC/DC, and the Aussie pub-rock scene, Chisel, H&C, Rose Tattoo.

Agree on the festivals sadly, except Soundwave - which is ****ing awesome.

A lot of people forget how groundbreaking that album was because it such a huge commercial hit. It had a lot of influences you just didn't find on a modern pop/rock album. It really was a groundbreaking album for the time.

Always been a big fan since senior years at school and thru uni (now i am in my early 30s). What I found amusing thou is the follow the leader mentality the station presenters now have. They are like puppy dogs all following the kingsmill cult (and i like kingsmil).

When a few years back they did the Hottest 100 ever various presenters gave their top ten. Nearly all of them had arcade fire in their top ten (their late 90s stuff). The thing was arcade fire was never ever played on JJJ at that time. Only when they came cool in 2006 all of triple j jumped on the bandwagon.

I almost guarantee the nobody would have been voting for their late 90's stuff. Considering their first recordings were in '01 and that Funeral wasn't released until 2004.

I doubt any radio stations were on them before 2004 and I highly doubt they would have been making ANY top 10's.

I don't really see how you can write off festivals as being 'rubbish'. Music is subjective. Just because you don't like a group doesn't mean they're rubbish. I don't like many of the bands at Soundwave, but it isn't fair for me to consider it a rubbish festival.

Just out of interest, wondering what JJJ haters think of this song?

It's Aussie hip-hop, but doesn't have the "strine" in it as much as Hilltop Hoods or Bliss n Eso and is currently getting high rotation on JJJ.
