Mum passed away this morning. Never forget to tell your mother that you love her. No one loves you like your mother does. Goodbye mum. I will always miss you.

Many condolences mate. Very hard thing to go through!

I prefer it to T2, but I’ve come to appreciate the latter more now that I ignore the gargantuan plotholes and recognise the signposts to John Connor’s future John Connordom.
The Terminator and Alien first two movies follow a similar path for me. The first are gritty suspense / horror films with (some) depth. The sequels are big budget action flicks. Both sequels are great big budget action flicks, I can watch over and over, but they can't be rated above the first in their series. Although the extended edition of Aliens where you get to see Ripley's daughter outlived her, giving real meaning to her attachment to Newt, rather than 'Woman = must get clucky over kid', does come close.

I watched Aliens with my kids on Sunday after introducing them to Alien the previous weekend.

Surprisingly they enjoyed the first one more. I thought they'd get swayed by the big-budget action of the second.

One thing that did make me laugh was the interrogation of Ripley at the beginning of Aliens. Set hundreds of years in the future, they're complaining about the 'very expensive space craft' that she blew up being worth 42 million dollars.

Had a bit of this about it...

I'm sorry and the weird religious nut that lays hands on people ... in a healing way, is??? We have a member of a weird religious cult running our country and her husband is our PM
I don't necessarily disagree with you.

I just find it a little disappointing that the ALP doesn't have someone a bit more "Prime Ministerial" than Albo to get Scomo out of the Lodge.

Current Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Secretary, Frances Adamson is the new Governor in SA taking over from Hieu Van Le in July.

She was Ambassador to China in 2011 to 2015 and she served in the Australian Consulate-General in Hong Kong in the late 1980s as well as Australian Commerce and Industry Office in Taipei. Was Deputy High Commissioner in London between 2005 to 2008.

Her daughter Claire Bunten worked at Port in the China section between 2016 and 2018. I assume now that she is back home, it means we can tap into her knowledge and network swhen we kickstart China strategy in 2 or 4 years time.

You can't blame the bureaucrats for pissing off the Chinese. Its politicians from both the government and opposition that have pissed them off.

Of course you can blame diplomats, their job is as intermediaries and advisors. When things go wrong it usually means they've messed up.

How can they stop backbenchers and rogue ministers saying what stupid things they want to say in a democracy?

That’s not really how it works.
You think the Chinese are watching parliament, or how the back channels work?
She will be advising the government every step of the way.

Yes it is how it works. They take all comments from backbenchers and think its all real, because they only know a one party state, where you shut up and don't criticise the leaders publicly.

Andrew Hastie was a backbencher up until the end of last year before he became assistant defence minister. He's ex SAS and was a member and then chair of the parliamentary joint committee on intelligence and security. He plenty of times attacked China publicly from the backbench and the Chinese took note of all his public utterances and also struck back at him.

How was Adamson supposed to stop Turnbull off the cuff from quoting Mao back to them at the end of 2017? That really pissed off the Chinese. It's naive to think bureaucrats have full control of what politicians say in Oz.
