Drew has been the mainstay of the fwd line but isn't getting any younger and let's say age dictates his output this time next year has slid from present levels and retirement looks imminent. The game style has changed and slower ball movement makes life more difficult for key forwards, and so their output is down, BUT you wouldn't hear buddy, roughie, tippet, or Hawkins use that as an excuse. Our developing key forwards are injury plagued and lets face it just aren't coming on at the rate we'd like. Black and wood surely the most promising, but they are hardly your big strong unstoppable monster forward. Tarrant and Daw have the physique but neither have developed at the rate required and injury and off field issues could further be a hindrance there. Who knows with Curran, a late 2015 debut is probably optimistic at best. Currie is a backup ruck man that's all. That leaves us with Brown. Has shown good athleticism and promise for a guy his size and still young, hopefully a full year in the system to build up strength and endurance sees him have a breakout year in 2015. Clubs always use the excuse that key position players take time to develop, but seems we have been trying to develop drews heir apparent for years but are no closer to resolving the issue. Question......come trade period this year, is it time for north to get bold in trying to package players and draft picks to try and get a Boyd or Patton for example? Who would you part with? Or do people have faith in the development trajectory of our stock of key forwards?

Patton or Boyd would be ideal, will most likely cost too much though.
It will be much easier going after Tomlinson or Jaksch.

And if you want even cheaper than that, Tim Membrey from the swans hasn't played a game yet but apparently a few Victorian clubs interested in bringing him back to Melbourne

Personally I think we need to go after someone who's had AFL experience and someone we know who is showing promise in the position. Taking a risk with someone who hasnt played is just as risky as drafting someone through the draft.

We should go after either Patton or Cameron. I think one of them will be leaving at the end of the year and thats why Boyd was drafted becuase GWS know it will be very difficult to keep them all.

Cameron will probably command about 800K a season which we could afford if we could offload a couple of guys (i.e-Tarrant, Wright, Anthony). Patton I think will be cheaper probably 500-600K but he plays more a full forward role so its just depending what the club thinks they need and what they can afford I guess.

Membrey is way too short to play as a key forward at AFL level. Third tall at best.

we knew we lacked KPF's years ago yet we didn't really draft for any, apart from Curren who has always had injury problems (probably why hawks passed on him)

To be fair the good ones usually go early and I can't think of any horror stories where we've passed up on one and really botched that pick.

Is Curran highly rated or did we more just take a bit of a punt? Hawks passed on him didn't they? Don't know much about him

Dominated at CHB for Oakleigh in the TAC Cup and played forward for Vic Metro to decent effect. Hawks passed because they weren't looking for talls and he hada hot spot on his foot they were concerned about.

His junior footy was decent. The thing I like about the footage I saw of him was he exerted a physical presence. There's something I saw about him that excited me, something we don't currently have. He's not the next Carey but could become a solid 150+ game player for the club.

The Hawks passed because they wanted to be active in trade week and tall forwards weren't a major concern for them.

When the ambulance chasing reporters were seeking out North people to doorstop for a comment re. Maj a couple of days ago, they were disappointed to find the players had the day off. However, the one player I saw have a microphone shoved in his face for a comment was none other than Tom Curran, who was in there on his day off. He fresh aired them of course but it was good to see him doing "whatever it takes" to get on the field.

true but that is what list strategy is, dont want to end up like Carlton's forward line.

I agree but maybe we haven't had the currency or opportunity?

Not playing sycophant here but quality key forwards are the rarest commodity. I genuinely can't think of many occasions we've taken a Carlton or bulldogs approach and bypassed a good tall forward in favour of a mid.

The only players I can think of that we missed out on were Jack Riewoldt, Kurt Tippett and Sam Reid.

Not sure I'd swap Lachie for the former and the latter were overlooked by a lot of clubs.

Do you know this as fact or based on your opinion?

Recall something being said about tall forward stocks at the time.

At a glance Hawks traded in Gunstan that year and then went about getting back some picks for Lisle and Sierakowski (ahem) so it checks out.

Tom's own words:

''Graham [Wright] basically explained that they want to be active in trade week and that, if they nominated me, it might be too hard to do that. And he said if they did nominate me, they'd have to see me in their top 45 prospects, which they didn't. They had to make the decision and, when I thought about it, I could see how it might end up being better for me this way."

The Hawks picked up Gunston in the trade period, so didn't need to go after a tall. Their picks before #40 were on smalls.

Maybe Pykie saw a bit of his junior days and would care to comment...?

Fair enough, cheers. (including King Corey and Only Forwards)

Shame he has been curtailed by injury so we don't really know what he has been capable of thus far. Due for a change of luck.

The limited footage I have seen, looked a very likely prospect in the Petrie mould. Big boy, with a big leap but perhaps more of a physical presence.
