We simply don't have the funds to keep paying 100k + wages to crooked players if we want to be competitive with the top echelon of sides, we need to make every cent count.

It's a fine line, they sign contracts, other potential targets watch and observe, you can't afford to be too ruthless because no one will come. You can't afford to be too ruthless as some of these boys are club legends and you'll piss some supporters off.
It's a delicate balancing act.

And it cost us dearly being far to soft and lenient, successful clubs make ruthless decisions not sentimental ones.

That’s being quite selective. Sure, the sentimental value on guys like Diaby was a mistake in hindsight. Wenger was too emotionally invested with him.

But you’re forgetting the bigger picture. That was during a time of the socialist wage structure that derailed the ability of the club to acquire the talent needed to challenge.

Off the top of my head, there were guys like Chamakh, Bendtner, Gervinho, Fabianksi, Almunia, Arshavin, Squillaci, Vermaelen, Park Chu Young, Eboue. Possibly more.

They would have been in the £55k - £80k ish a week bracket. They floated around the squad for a couple of years, in and out. Winding down contracts or unable to find another club because of their wages.

When you add all this up, £600k-£700k a week on guys who in some cases didn’t even make a match day squad, that’s a crippling problem on free cashflow.

No wonder there was next to nothing available to invest in new players. For me, that was he biggest mistake during that era.

Carrying one or two injury prone guys on the books is more than feasible, but carrying 8+ who aren’t contributing to the first team isn’t.

For me, financially speaking and based on performance, retaining Welbeck is a non event for Arsenal.

I'd be gutted if I was TV getting put in the same bracket as those other blokes. The socialist wage structure was a shambles though mate, I couldn't agree more.

The new administration have been pretty ruthless with Ramsey thus far so you would expect similar treatment for others. Having said that, without a diagnosis on Welbeck's injury it is hard to credit this one to being injury prone as it looked like an impact injury.

From memory, I believe TV5 was in the £80k range. Perhaps only Arshavin was equal/on higher wages than him from that group I listed earlier.

That wage structure really caused a lot of problems. And it’s effects were far reaching, took a number of years for those guys to gradually exit the club.

Park Chu Young, £2m for 7 minutes of premier league football and £60k a week for 3 years. And just on Arshavin, in his last year or two I genuinely forgot about him. Until you see a photo of the team training and every few months he randomly appears.

He probably paid his dues by helping us get qualification for the CL in the 2008/2009 season though, we looked in real strife in Jan when we signed him.

It's an impact injury I'm pretty sure, but my point remains in his 5 years at the club he's been injured more so than healthy.

And hardly fired a shot in those first couple of months until he ran riot at Anfield late April. What an insanely good game that was, even watching the highlights again now is something else. Outstanding.

Nelson scores again in Germany, that's 6 goals in 7 games for the 18 year old, some on here didn't care if we sold him for pittance from memory ?
He's killing it atm, the loan move has been great for him.

Was thinking nketiah could have used a loan move aswell but think he'll start getting minutes now since welbz has broken his ankle

Welbeck shouldn't be offered a new contract. Let's not forget this is a guy that's been in the Premier League system for 12 years.

12 years. At both Manchester United and Arsenal and still has never scored over 10 league goals in a season. He's not good enough for a "top 6" team.

His injury is a shame but he really should be told to look at other options.

But he is such a nice guy! How could you say no to that smile? ;)

Nelson was pretty good in the pre season last year. I wonder if we can recall him?

We could but why would you want to? He's clearly found his groove there and is developing in a great environment.

Why rip him out of that to put him in to the cut-throat Premier League atmosphere where he'll need to re-adjust to everything? Let him play out the season there then see what we have at the end of the season.

Yep would be hard decision. Continue his great progress vs fill in with our depth. I would more then likely not recall him... but would be tempted.

Nketiah should be the deciding factor as to whether or not Welbeck gets offered another contract. If he can prove himself between now and the end of the season then we won't need Welbeck, if not Welbeck will be handy option to have once fit.

If he takes a contract on half the money he's on now.
