An unfortunate situation with Tomiyasu and his recurring injuries. A shame it came to that. I wonder if it was player led or not, it was reported last season he spent a considerable amount of time back with his family in Japan and doing some recovery work there. It can be very difficult and lonely being on the other side of the world whilst suffering those setbacks.
Perhaps it was he who initiated this decision, as that type of thing isn’t necessarily associated with Arsenal (and long history of persisting with frequently injured players, Arteta even handed out a new contract extension to Elneny when he did his ACL for example).
He was excellent when on the pitch, there was a time he was integral to Arteta’s plans, either a regular starter or usually amongst the first substitutes to bring into a match. His departure leaves a whole in the squad for that type of unique, versatile defender across the back 4. Hoping he can return to fitness and get back to playing again at the highest level.
