We came out with intent to play and win by attacking, and Eze through the middle is delicious. It was nice to see Arteta let the team play with more freedom, and the first 15-20 minutes showed that. We were well on top and deserved a goal.

I am not sure why VAR intervened with the Pope/Gyokeres incident. It's hardly a "clear and obvious error". Gillett is an awful ref, he's reffed 4 of our 6 games and he's junk irrespective of which game he is in charge of. Absolute rubbish referee. An indictment that he is a Premier League ref.

Pope was huge, made some outstanding saves, especially against Eze. Gabriel should have done a lot better on the goal, weak to go down with a little push in the back for such a big and strong guy.

Can we talk about Jurrien Timber? A pillar of consistency, and a ****ing bull. I don't think there is a better fullback in the league than him, and there aren't many better than him in the world.

We have such great depth on the bench now. To be able to bring Merino, Saliba and Martinelli on is fantastic. And that was with Odegaard still on the bench.

Rice was excellent, his best game this season.

13/18 points with OT, Anfield, St James and City at home out the way is a great return.

Well what a ****ing joy that was to watch. Just brilliant. A resounding **** off win, its just what was needed for Arsenal.

- Let's get the shit out of the way first. The standard of officiating never ceases to amaze. What I don't get is why is Gillet involved in so many Arsenal matches, that's 4 out of the opening 6? Are there no other refs available? I don't get how he's not permitted to officiate Liverpool because he's a fan of their club, but somehow is persistently involved in a direct rival like Arsenal? I cannot understand how you can overrule that penalty, how is there clear and obvious evidence to rescind his on field decision? That penalty get paid ten times out of ten. Thankfully in the wash up it doesn't affect the end result however this stuff just shouldn't continue to be happening in a league of this stature.

- Pleasing however that the ol delaying the restart does actually apply elsewhere, the thug Joelinton (who should've been on a yellow already) finally got booked for it on 83 minutes. And at least they showed consistency with not nailing Gabriel for handball late on because it deflected off his body first, supposedly that was the rationale for overturning Pope on Gyokeres.

- Now, onto the good stuff. This is a monumental win for Arsenal given a) how difficult St James Park has been in recent seasons b) Newcastle slapped Arsenal around 3 times last season and there's always that extra element of spice to this fixture and c) to comeback and win it the way we did, burying that winning goal right on the full time whistle garners so much momentum and energy.

- Gabriel is a ****ing monster. So pleased for him that he was the won to win it, given the prior events. He should'nt have been beaten as easily for their goal, that was very preventable and he usually deals with those crosses with ease. In fact that goal was even more preventable as Mosqeura's mistake led to the unneeded corner, a big learning curve for him. He's been otherwise excellent so far this season and I think it was always intended that Saliba could only manage 45 minutes so that's probably the reason for the switch at half time.

- Eze is a masterful signing. Transformative. It was always going to be special to have him back at the club, the way which he ditched and snubbed Spurs' in the days leading to his signing at Arsenal just make it funny. He is brilliant, loved that Arteta gave him the midfield position again and can see him learning the offball movement in this system. Given how small a sample size it is already in that position, this is brilliant to see him adapt that to his game and it gives Arsenal another potent option in that role whilst also decreasing the load Odegaard has had to carry with pressing in that position. Eze's ball striking is also very impressive, without Pope pulling off a number of a worldy saves we'd be looking at a comprehensive smashing here.

- I would have preferred Trossard come off the bench given the impact he has, and Martinelli start instead. However Trossard I felt was good in ball retention, which was important in a few moments as we looked to dial down the temperature of the crowd here which Arsenal haven't been able to manage in recent seasons. They bay for blood usually with Arsenal, and those Joelinton and Bruno usually oblige with tackles that amazingly escape bookings time after time.

- Declan Rice was immense. He may not get man of the match plaudits however he was everywhere, that engine he has is starting to get back to his best. He usually works his way into a season and based on this performance, there's a lot there to be encouraged by. I thought he and Gyokeres had their best games for the season so far. Gyokeres I am very confident would have scored the penalty however regardless, there was much to like about his involvement and didn't shy away from the battle. And apparantly having his face almost gouged is also acceptable haha.

- Odegaard for what its worth I thought was very good when he came on. As was Lewis Skelly. And speaking of subs, how many goals is that now off the bench so far this season? This time Merino. That's a brilliant header, he placed it so well. He's always had an excellent technique and I think I read a stat he's Arsenal's highest goal scorer in 2025 so far. Can see why Arteta finds a way to get him on the pitch, because he delivers end product.

- The squad strength is brilliant. Its one thing to have the options, its another to use them. This was the right time to bring Saka off, who I thought looked very sharp in moments. He is still regaining fitness and nice to see that speed returning sprinting into the box. However on 70 minutes was the right time. It was a bold move at the time too bringing off Calafiori for Merino, Arteta is making changes and taking some gambles that doesn't always fit the media narrative around him.

- It looked to me as a back 3 off ball but Rice covering the left hand space until later in the match when MLS came on. Saliba, Odegaard, Merino, Martinelli and MLS as the 5 subs brought on. With Dowman and White unused subs. Havertz, Madueke, Hincapie, Jesus missing through injury and still to return. Is this real life haha.

- There's some nice clips doing the round of Ian Wright's reaction in the studio, I always love seeing that stuff. Some good clips as well about Arteta's reaction to how much injury time there will be, relaying that to the players and pushing them to attack the win.

- I've said it before and I'll say it again. For all the noise around Arsenal, and there's plenty (the level of obsessiveness on Arsenal on the main board is ****ing gold), the players believe irrespective. They tell you that in their actions and digging deep here is the kind of thing, off the back of Saliba's pending contract announcement, that seasons can be built on.

- There's so long to go and still so much has to go right, for now though with the opening fixtures including City at home, away to Liverpool, away to Old Trafford, away to Newcastle and 13 points on the board, I will take that for sure. To be only 2 points off top from those opening matches is a very good spot to be in I feel and nothing to panic about.

- Long way to go from here and now needs backing up in the coming weeks with some "winnable" matches upcoming (which counts for nothing though if you don't go and get it done).

A massive win and a huge 3 points here.

Bruz, no offence, tldr.

I'm loving it. Salah literally handled a ball in the lead up to a goal and it doesn't receive a single mention, but every incident in an Arsenal game is forensically analysed. The way Arsenal in general, and Arteta specifically, triggers those muppets is a joy.
I thought maybe it was just me noticing this.

Arsenal twitter in particular, is HUGE. We are one of the most well supported clubs on there.

Some of them are also fragile as hell and easy to wind up. That's why you have daily thinkpieces on Sky sports etc about Arteta/Arsenal. It brings in thousands in engagement $$$$$$$$$$$

It's clickbait. And that clickbait moves into other spheres, like here.

It's bizarre, my favourite this week was the win in the league cup being "embarrassing" because they didn't win by more. Of course City won by the same score, away from home against a team in the same division. Didn't rate a mention.

I do think this is a massive issue. There are a bunch of heavily followed Arsenal fan accounts that constantly share triggering content to make a point - but all they are doing is falling into the trap of amplifying the content. If you share every single thing designed to wind you up, they will continue to push it out every day.

Unfortunately these clowns are not smart enough to recoginse that, so they walk into the trap day after day.

Nope I’ve definitely noticed it too, it’s fascinating the amount of discussion Arsenal seem to generate, proportional to the content of other clubs (or even their own club actually). Never ceases to amaze me.

As Planet14 mentioned, that rant about Arsenal being pathetic or whatever because we didn’t win the league cup tie by more is one for the ages. Sensational stuff :D

The levels we’ve seen to have come under Arteta the last few seasons. I guess they liked it more when Arsenal were a banter team being pummeled in Europa League, to now bitching about the margin of goals we win by. Just hook it to my veins.

After every round of Premier League matches this season, BBC football pundit Troy Deeney will give you his team and manager of the week.

Eberechi Eze (Arsenal):
In the number 10 position he was easily the best player on the pitch in the win at Newcastle. If it wasn't for Nick Pope he would have had a hat-trick on the day. He opens up so much for Viktor Gyokeres, for Bukayo Saka, for Leandro Trossard. You have so much to worry about because he just blends into these wonderful positions, he can shoot from the edge of the box which now nobody is really doing. Once he is shooting, it forced the defending team to come out and try and close the shots down which opens up space for other people. He was great.
