All has gone quiet on the striker front.

Mustafi appears close (but then again have been saying that for over a week) however I'm hoping the search for a defender hasn't glossed over the glaring need for a new forward. You never know at Arsenal.
I think we'd all just be happy with him signing a defender at the moment!

Once Higuain went to Juve for 90 mill, RM activated their buyback on Morata in order to keep him, and Lyon planted their feet and refused to sell Lacazette, there wasn't a whole lot left to choose from, in terms of getting someone better/potentially better than Giroud.

RM bought back Morata weeks before the Higuain move. It was one of the earliest transfer moves.

Same difference, it's about the sum of the parts, not the order they happened in.

It means that in the end, the only striker of that calibre to move this window was Higuain. It's like treacle out there.

Cool. Was reading it like a chain of events.

There'll still be big (ish) striker moves though, can't imagine Lukaku stays at Everton (though kudos to them if he does). Benteke moves too.

I'm honestly at the stage I don't know what we're looking for. Someone to compliment/challenge Giroud? We should have been all over Ben Yedder. Someone better? Well, sorry Arsenal, that's gonna cost you.

No big name striker will want to move to Arsenal.

Right now I concur (to a degree, I can imagine sitting next to Alexis getting fed by Ozil would still have its appeal to some).

So what are we actually looking for?

Quality striker we can sign at Wengers value not the market value.

How many big name strikers want to move anywhere? They're all already at clubs as big as or bigger than Arsenal, where's the incentive to move? How easy do you think it is to talk Lewandowski out of Bayern, and do that plus afford the astronomical fee for Aguero from City, Ronaldo from RM, or Messi, Suarez, or Neymar from Barcelona?

The best we can do is find someone who is about to be there, beat the others to them, and then hope they become the next Henry, rather than the next Bendtner.

And Benteke isn't a big striker, he's gone to Aston Villa after being a bust at Liverpool.

I'd be making Juventus an offer they can't refuse for Dybala.

Welcome to Arsenal, Mandjukic.

Will be seriously pissed if we don't land a decent striker this window, ****ing welbeck outshines Giroud as a striker in our team has everyone forgotten the amount of chances he fluffs and that ridiculous goal drought he went through for us in the most critical time of arsenals season?

He's a ****ing backup striker at best, not a starting striker especially not at a club who should be competing for the title.

I like Giroud but he's just a bit too slow and not clinical enough.
Works hard, good touch and build up play.
If we got someone like Mahrez or played two up front, I'd be happy to start him.
Fact is though, we need someone that can get 20+ league goals a season.
He's not young either.

Giroud needs to be pushed. Whenever his spot has been under threat he excels. It's easy to et complacent when you know you can't get dropped.

What I don't understand is how, some like Wenger who loves to unearth gems, can't even sign a striker who's performed well or admirably in the Dutch, French, Spanish or German leagues, who can improve with experience and take themselves to another level. Sure he's gone after Lacazette but he's not the only striker in the world that's on the brink.

He's gone from Villa > Liverpool > Palace.

Because everyone else caught wise, he's not the only one scouring those leagues anymore, and even at those levels the money thrown around by some clubs is ridiculous, and the stars in players eyes when RM and Barca recruiters come knocking (to eventually put them in their feeder teams) grow bigger and bigger - hence our 'unearth' picks keep getting younger and more speculative, ie Campbell, Sanogo, Vela

He's gone from Villa > Liverpool > Palace.

Right, but still, a parabola

It's much much much harder to do now.

Clubs are picking the smaller leagues apart looking for the next bargain, then you have the bigger clubs like Chelsea buying any youth player that shows an ounce of talent and farming them out for the next 3-4 years.

If you look at our transfer history since 10/11 it hasn't been terrible -

Good - Very good - Amazing

Cazorla
Giroud
Monreal
Ospina
Mertesacker
Koscielny
Sanchez
Ozil
Cech

Serviceable - Good

Arteta
Ox
Paulista
Ramsey
Podolski
Flamini
Chambers
Welbeck
Podolski

Not good enough

Debuchy
Campbell
Gervinho
Santos
Chu-Young park
Jenkinson
Squillaci
Chamakh
Miyaichi
Wellington Silva
Sanogo
Vivano

Most of those are the same kind of speculative buys the other clubs have been making.

The problem now is players like Santi Cazorla (who was a good player but not amazing) cost us a reasonable €19m. The same kind of player is going to cost us double or triple that now.

Look at Giroud £9.6 million for the top goal scorer in France 5 years ago.......now people are saying Lacazette for £60-£70m. Its madness.

He didn't want to play for Arsenal because of Wenger - the famous 'Zlatan doesn't do auditions' story.

Plus, Arsenal isn't exactly a destination club for the top shelf strikers in today's game. With all due respect to Vardy and Leicester, if we couldn't convince Vardy to come - what chance do we have for the likes of Ibra etc.

Mediocrity, softness, victim's mentality and lack of ambition are synonymous with Arsenal these days. Majority of which originates from the top.

Vardy said it "was an easy decision" to stay at Leicester. Good on him for doing so, but that also reflects poorly on Arsenal.

Vardy has never been to London except to play football. He is a stereotypical little Englander.
