I posted something about the use of "understood" when it comes to making up bullshit rumours in an previous post, but since Hackdorn's article now has legs on the Herald Sun website, I'll revisit it.

From now on, whenever you want to say something ridiculous or blantantly false, just use the words "it is understood"...you'll get away with not having to name sources or diminishing your journalistic credibility...

For example:

"It is understood that Stronzo makes paper airplanes in the bathtub while singing the theme music to Good Times".
Or, "It is understood that Memories is really 130kg and can't come back from Tasmania because he can't fit on the plane".
Or, "It is understood that hitmeup007 and Salim Malik are the same person".

It's understood that hagdorn was caught havin an affair with barra and a chimpaneze in an eagles jumper.

Its one of many from this well known sportswriter...

Then this came out....

FWIW, i am bewildered why Taz would not be floated during trade week...unless he was going to sign another contract with Freo.

Whats the deal with Tazs' high price tag??. Are the interested clubs required to pay whatever he was going to get at Freo if they traded for him??.

He has a contract. Someone has to pay it. If a prospective new club can't afford it, Fremantle would have to pay it to get the deal done.

It is understood that Woosha looked every player in the eye...
It is understood benny looked him back in the eye, fed him a bunch of bullshit and woosha believed him.

It is understood woosha was a bit pissed for being so easily duped by a junkie.

I think people on this thread can be too precious, and ridicule minor inconsistencies is text. The whole point is to discuss interesting topics, not shoot down people on terminology.

Don't think you have quite got it yet, Stronzo. It's meant to be something that is ridiculous or blatantly false ;)

PS go the Mighty Lions on Sunday

How about this?

It is understood that Subiaco have a chance of beating South Fremantle in the 2009 WAFL grand final. ;)

It is understood that big footy has the most enlightened and intelligent critics on anything football .

Nice one. :thumbsu: It works because its a ridiculous and blatantly false statement. Everybody knows that it only applies on the Fremantle board. :p

Not bad, but I prefer this one

It is understood that South Fremantle's belting of Subi in the second semi has had no effect on their approach to the GF this Sunday, and provides a true indication of the outcome of Sunday's match

An age old device to lend credibility or get away with saying something without actually having or needing to provide proof/evidence/compelling argument etc also to avoid accountability later.

In the same vein as "some say", "sources tell me" and "it is widely believed".

Alarm bells should always ring when these and similar are used to back up a statement or as qualifiers.

Notice how many times Carro uses one of these phrases when speaking, should provide a solid indicator of her credibility.

It is understood that it's widely believed that sources close have mentioned that it is understood that some have been saying that Caro has journalistic integrity....

It is understood that naitakneei swift Brad conttested ball evert and notte are better than hill suban palmer and hinkley LOL

If I ever hear "It is understood- absolutely" I reckon I'll smash the offending piece of hardware.

Nothing makes my eyes roll more than people who think they sound 'like clever' by saying 'absolutely' in all it's various ways.

It is understood that everyone missed me terribly while I was away and that the Freo board was a poorer place without my invaluable input.
