Dear Victorians

Over the past weeks I have seen thread after thread of people bagging out teams such as The Bulldogs and St Kilda as sides who have no success. I am fully aware of the failures of my own team, so any lolmantle comments will just confirm what i already know. All you Victorians know that despite the failure of my club, we are just one grand final victory away from being equal to most of you in terms of success, and that is worrying you deeply.

After all, why should I recognise the VFL as a legitimate competition when the Victorians fail to recognise the WAFL or the SANFL. The denunciation of any recent flags as 'bradbury' or 'tainted' demonstrate the fear amongst these Victorian clubs. After all, if the VFL was such a great competition that it deserves equal status as the AFL, then why have just 50% of the flags come from VFL clubs when they make up more than half the competition?

The VFL is simply an excuse for the fans of clubs such as Collingwood to rip into other clubs, despite their relative failure in the big picture, it is time to realise that VFL flags do not count, especially as a comparison to the non Vic clubs.

The AFL is just the VFL with interstate teams added in. It is the same league. What is known as the VFL these days is the equivalent to the SANFL and WAFL.

I am South Australian, and that is my view. I'm not doing it to hide behind my clubs successes, because frankly, there isn't much to hide behind.

Just calling it as it is.

Good thread, 100% agree as it's only fair. This is not the VFL but the AFL. Brisbane/West Coast on top bitches! :thumbsu:

This is not true. The VFL continues on as a suburban competition, the AFL is a complete new entity by virtue of a legal agreement. All pre-AFL flags are defunct.

Don't blame me, I'm just the messenger. As I am for all intents and purposes relaying Clive's message, I am a messenger of god.

Yay verily, Clive spaketh unto me and he did utter "Not only can I bombeth them from 60m out, but I too am from South Australia and calleth it like it is".

All AFL flags count.

The AFL began in 1897

All premiership tallys, individual awards, individual player game records, coaching records all begin and measured against statistics that begin 1897.

The record holder for most goals in a game is Fred Fanning with 18

The record holder for most games is Michael Tuck with 426

The all time goal kicking record is held by Tony Locket with 1360

The most consecutive premierships is Collingwood 4

The are all AFL records

The league has many times added and sometimes had mergers over the years, Freo & Port etc entering are no different to Richmond coming late or Hawthorn & North Melbourne.

Go ask anyone associated with the AFL commission when the league began and they tell you 1897.

They even celebrated the centenary in 1996. They made a big song and dance and actually had a gold premiership cup instead of silver.

If you dont give a stuff about the AFLs history before your expansion club entered then thats fine, but the history is there and counts for the clubs involved and also the league itself.

Brownlow and Coleman weren't even born in 1897.

You're breaking up. Are you going through a tunnel?

Brownlow and Coleman weren't even born in 1897.

And they never played football post 1990 so why are the AFL awards named after them? and why have they been for decades before the name change which was simply a marketing gimmick to promote the league?

Why does Jock McHale hold the record for most games coached?

Your like someone born in 1947 trying to argue WW2 didnt happen because you werent a part of the world yet.

Because interstate teams chose to join the VFL/AFL not vice versa.

So does that mean we wipe the slate clean at the end of this year when the Gold Coast team join and then again when West Sydney joins the comp?

Clearly it will be a whole new competition once these teams join and we would not want them to feel bad about not having a history.

I suppose it would work out well for Freo as they would be able to drag everyone down to their standards instead of actually doing something to reach the great hights that St Kilda and the Bulldogs have set for them to overtake.

I did not know that West Coast and Adealide were teams in their own right before they joined the competition. Would you like to count every permiership in the WAFL and SANFL for them?

Victorians do recognise the WAFL and SANFL:thumbsu:. They were leagues that provided the best comp in the land with some half decent players. All WAFL and SANFL players aspired to play in the VFL, so what does that tell you?

Were VFL players saying to their team mates 'gee if i have a big year this year, i might get a call from an SANFL or WAFL side'.

You really think it was a recent decision dont you? with poor little Freo wanting to name it the Peter Bell medal and getting shouted down by the big bad Victorians?

Brownlow and Coleman were handy VFL players on muddy suburban grounds but would struggle getting a game in the AFL.

Better options that would have more credibility with today's players would be the Kemp and the Lockett.

Why dont you write to the AFL expressing your views that the names on their most coveted individual awards are outdated and lack credibility

Stuff tradition right

Maybe we can change the medals names on an annual basis?. With the previous years winner the name of the medal?, thats the kind of idea that appeals to folk like you i bet
