Second-year midfielder Ed Allan was fantastic through the centre of the ground on Friday, finding plenty of the ball in space and in the contest. The 19-year-old’s increased endurance was a feature as he bobbed up in many of the side’s damaging plays all across the ground. Often using his height to his advantage, Allan dished quick hands to his teammates, while also weaving his way out of traffic on multiple occasions.


Sofronidis stands tall in defence


Playing in his first official game since joining the Club’s VFL side, Sam Sofronidis was impressive in the defensive fifty against Port Melbourne. Often the last man in defence, the 194cm tall was tasked with matching up the opposition’s key forwards all day and repelled many forward entries. Having spent the summer trialling with the AFL squad, Sofronidis is well equipped with his teammates already.

After trailing by 21 points at the main break, the Pies came out with vengeance in the third quarter to turn the game around. A brilliant team play saw Jack Hutchinson kick the first goal of the term, while the pressure displayed in the front half caused multiple turnovers that resulted in goals. Often looking for a better option in front of the big sticks, four different goal-kickers hit the scoreboard.

Frampton kicked our first goal
Reef had a shot at goal but the wind faded it, but I thought he did some nice things. Led well, had some nice plays. But it was a tough day for our forwards.

Love reading about TJ. I think in a season or two he is going to develop into a regular at senior level, and become a very handy player for us.
He may be one of those players drafted that in a few years time commentators say, " l can't believe Collingwood got him at pick 37"

There is Sullivan available for more midfield time. He at has the VFL resume that others do not. Jack Bytel exists, although it now looks dumb we did not invite some tall timbre to play.

Oscar Steene is not ready. Would be cleaned up from the MCG.

Cripps supposedly had no endurance, whereas our boy supposedly has a tank. So not sure if it's the same issue. Not that I've seen enough of Allan to know if it is an issue at all.

No, by his second year Cripps was seen as a player who’d make it. We’d assessed his endurance wasn’t good enough. However, we soon learnt that you can train endurance whereas you can’t train talent and skill as easily. That’s why we took Maynard. Should always have been Cripps over Freeman but to be fair, Freeman had many issues outside of football, still not entirely sure what. Scharenberg was the right call - injuries unlucky.

I was hoping we'd select Teakle too. Surprised when we didn't. Particularly when I heard Leppa say we'd been looking at him the year before.

Well if you look at the practice games, I’d have taken Sullivan. I don’t see it with Bytel.

At least with Teakle, we’d have a ruckman for the inevitable crisis. Aiden Begg does not look VFL quality and his pre-season has not been inspiring (in the kindest way possible).
