Other Teams
there are no other teams worthy
Some of us witnessed some brilliant Test sides in our time that seemed clear number 1 in world for a period of time. For the sake of this virtual 4 Team SuperTest Series I am thinking of the great West Indies teams I was in awe of as a kid. Then around early 2000's the Aussie side with basically an allrounder keeper batting no 7 seemed an awesome team to beat for other sides. Before my time I can only assume the South African teams just before banned in 1970 must have been a special team and the Aussie team in mid 70's with Lillee and Thommo must have been breathtaking bowling duo go at it against other sides.

They all host a series at home between 4 teams with each meeting the other once in that part of tour as they visit each sides nation once. Who wins the overall champions trophy?

South Africa 1967 to 70 era
Australia 1973 to 76 era
West Indies 1980 to 83 era
Australia 2000 to 03 era

They each play 12 SuperTests in the overall series with playing the other side 4 times across the 4 tours.

Work it out anyway you like but restricted to players that represented their nation at some point in those periods.

Will Chappelli punch Waugh for not playing the hook shot?

Aus 1973-76 the odd man out?

Possibly, but with Thommo at his quickest apparently around 1974 to 76, it must have been quite a team to try to bat against with Lillee and him together.
I cannot find Australia losing a series between 1973 starting and end of 1976.
1977 was when all the World Series Cricket discussions off the radar happening so stopped at 1976.

Summer of Test Series, First Match, Test Matches, Result
1972-1973 Australia v. Pakistan 22/12/1972 3 Tests Australia 3-0
1972-1973 West Indies v. Australia 16/02/1973 5 Tests Australia 2-0
1973-1974 Australia v. New Zealand 29/12/1973 3 Tests Australia 2-0
1973-1974 New Zealand v. Australia 01/03/1974 3 Tests Drawn 1-1
1974-1975 Australia v. England 29/11/1974 6 Tests Australia 4-1
1975 England v. Australia 10/07/1975 4 Tests Australia 1-0
1975-1976 Australia v. West Indies 28/11/1975 6 Tests Australia 5-1
1976-1977 Australia v. Pakistan 24/12/1976 3 Tests Drawn 1-1
1976-1977 New Zealand v. Australia 18/02/1977 2 Tests Australia 1-0
1976-1977 Australia v. England 12/03/1977 1 Test Australia 1-0

South Africa of the mid 70s would have been the best team in the world by a fair measure imo.

Was just looking at their Team then before banned. Some ridiculous allround depth.
Wonder if Clive Rice and Garth Le Roux were around in mid 70's. Certainly saw them in World Series Cricket.
Anyway it is their side before banned part of this virtual challenge.

What era's laws of the game are we playing under?
Good question. Never even thought about it as was just idea that popped into my head reading another post and I posted this thread with no further thought, to see what others would come up with. Guess I left it too open ended. Guess we can make it for the team hosting the other 3 that series played on their terms from their era and vice versa.

I'm willing to run a text based simulation of these. Do you want me to use career averages or averages in that particular era? Either way, if you list all the averages (bowling ones for batsmen you want to bowl too) I can put them in.

I do not know the exact averages of the era's.
I can look them up over the weekend if you want and post them later. I reckon a simulation from averages would be interesting. Maybe a weighting system of their average from games they played in the 4 year chunk given 60% weighting and career 40% and see what it does.

Damn close true, but going for a 4 year chunk if possible and given 2005 we lost to Poms and not long after 2007 we fell off cliff think the early 2000's a better version. Think that one even won 15 Tests on trot before Steve Waugh infamously enforced the follow-on, on a road and bowlers ran out of freshness not long after hit a road hump called Dravid.

Not how it works mate. I either punch in the 4 year average or the career average and that's what you get.

How about I go with whichever one is better, the period or the career?

Well what I meant is after I find the period average and career average if I do a weighting sum will end up with one figure for each player anyway and list them here when I eventually look it all up.

If you do not want to wait perfectly fine to do as you suggesting.

If we're playing current laws, you'll have to leave the Windies skipper out after their second test - he'd be bannned for over rates

When the 4 teams play a round of SuperTests against each other in South Africa it will be 8 ball overs. :p
Rest day after 3rd day and no helmets there.

The sim is playing up, unfortunately I can't simulate it on there. However ICC has an "all time test greats" series that I could probably use to match up all bar the Australia vs Australia game (which the 2000's would win anyway). Is there a different team you'd want to put in instead?

Technically there was never a law against wearing helmets.

Technically there was never a law against wearing helmets.

Yes, South Africa side of that era before banned for two decades had none so when the other 3 teams are hosted by South Africa we are wearing no helmets in that round of Tests to play with the conditions that Test teams had at that time. Similarly the 3 teams being hosted by the mid 70's Aussie team will face Thommo and Lillee with no helmets like the Poms of that era and Windies batsmen had to then. Some of the conditions of this virtual champions trophy tour of the three lands.

When the 4 teams hosted by this centuries Aussie team or early 1980's Windies helmets can be used.
