WAFL Round 9, 2009

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last round before the state game break and it probably can't come quickly enough for a few clubs, particularly Perth, who have a few key injury worries and have to face Subi before the break, and East Freo.

Sharks v Swans - again depends on the players chosen for AFL duties. Naitanui should play more ruck time and was very good in the ruck last week, for first game after a 3 month lay off. This game should be decided by the runners, with both teams having good running brigades. We'll see Lucas, Sheppard, Fasolo, Basile, Davidson, Houlihan against Jetta, Wolfenden, Embley, Naitanui and Notte. Add the experience of Green, Griffiths, McCarrey against Robinson, Twomey and Roberts and they should be pretty evenly matched. At Shark Park I'd normally go for Easts but I'll still enjoy a bit of banter in the Shark Pit on Saturday.

Bulldogs v Thunder - should also be an interesting match, especially after a surprisingly big loss last week at home. Both teams will also be dependent on AFL team selections, but Souths haven't had Thornton, Murphy or Duffield for the past 2-3, so they should cope. Could this be the Dell'olio v Morabito show? Jeffrey returns to entertain the hordes, which is a bonus! Souths should have too much strength at home, but Peel will give them a run.

Subi v Perth - a few weeks ago we would have said this would be match of the round, but how quickly things change. This match is going to be won by the coaches, in the heads of the players. Can Jarman get the Demons up and keep them revved for the entire match? We saw what can be done when they played Swans and when EP played Subi, just kept harrassing the ball carrier. I've heard Watters address his players a few times this year and the recurring theme is for them to keep their mind on the game - that'll be his task this week. Seriously, call me biased, but for the WAFL comp we need Perth to beat Subi. Unfortunately, I can't see this being a closely fought match, but am happy to be proven wrong.

Falcons v Tigers - OK, so which Falcons team is going to turn up? The one that beat Peel or the one that doesn't seem to be switched on every few weeks? The Falcons have possibly the best forward line going around, Seaby has been in impressive form and they have a good running division when on song. Who's going to ruck against Seaby? Can't see Ruck or Warren beating him. McGinnity and Crabb will go in hard in the middle, Swift has undoubted talent, Stevenson seems to be talented as well, Jarvis and Matson put in week in week out, but can they get their hands on the ball enough in the middle? Still should be a pretty good match, but if Seaby is playing can't see the Tigers winning.

Should be another fine weekend, last one before the rain sets in it looks like, so get out there, support your team and have some fun whilst it lasts.

Some guy on the radio said that Hansen towelled up Spangher early on and has 3 to half time.

He also said Naitanui was doing well. :)

Natanui better than last week and tackling like a demon!

As my Swans supporting mate said 5 mins ago, he is ready and "might as well learn the rest at AFL level" .....

Lewis Jetta should be drafted, as long as you dont need too much defensive accountability.

Can anyone confirm that Trent Dennis-Lane has kicked 8 for Subi???

Always liked the kid, quick enough and beautiful skills around goal. Still only 19.

Haven't noticed Ash Smith at all. Haven't been concerntrating on the game but the TV is next to me and I have hardly heard his name being called.

Very good news about Naitanui.

No idea on NickNats stats but he is getting better the longer the game goes on and he has been very good today IMO.

i was watching the second half and ashley smith looks great. very good kick of the ball.:thumbsu:

Went to the Souths Vs Peel game and kept an eye out for our WAFL listed players.

Callum Wilson started well and kicked a couple, after Hammond bagged a few JD rushed him back into defence where he struggled.

Brad Ebert was very good for Peel, polished by hand and foot and worked himself into the ground. Was in Peel's best, fierce tackler.

Jordan Jones showed some good signs down back for Peel, really takes the game on and has good closing speed. He went forward for a period and didnt look out of place. Probably needs to find more of the footy.

Ashley Arrowsmith is polished when he gets the ball, it's now a matter for him to get to more contests. He's built his body up, just needs to work a little harder without the pill.

Pretty easy win for Souths in the end.

OK, I'm sensing the hordes want a report?:D

Houlihan - started by kicking the first goal and then being heavily involved for the first 5 minutes, then went missing for the next 2 quarters, but was again quite prominent in the last.

Spangher - you're not going to want to hear this, pantsed by Hansen. Hansen was absolutely dominant through the latter part of the first and entire second quarter. Spangher fought it out, moved into the midfield at one point and provided some drive that had been missing in the first half. Thought he was still one of the better players for Easts.

Hansen - As I said, was dominant for 3/4 of the first half, the difference is, Swans players can deliver the ball to him. Could have kicked 6-9 goals again. Led well all over the ground and was a pivotal focus point.

Notte - one word sums this guy up, genius. Genuine footy smarts, his kick to set up the fourth goal of the match was sublime, a 50 m hard, low trajectory kick to get to the forward before the defence got back. Then his 2nd goal, Swans 12th, was just awesome. Went up in a pack of 5-6 players, brought the ball to ground about 45m out, collected the ball of the ground and snapped over his left shoulder. Brilliant! Tired in the last.

Davis - I thought was one of the catalysts behind getting Swans up and running in the first and second quarters, where he played a lot through the middle. Moved back to defence in the second half and between him and Clancee Pearce they cut off most attacks the Sharks mounted.

Naitanui - well, going from playing about half the game on the ball to playing almost the entire game I thought might be a big ask. Must have won close to 35+ hit outs, in the end (just to amuse himself I'm sure) he was just belting the ball forward 15+m from each stoppage and then run and tackle the poor Sharks player that took the ball.
His tackling is ferocious. There were at least 3 occasions when he wrapped up the Shark player and just slammed them in to ground, I actually felt sorry for no.12 when he was 'bounced' off the ground in a tackle in the last. Took a great contested mark in the first 5-10 mins, which really set the tone for him for the day. I can't believe the Sharks supporters talking to me in the Shark Pit actually said he wasn't that impressive!:confused: Not even listed in our best players but he dominated that ball out of the middle!

Oh, and LJ was ordinary again today, don't even bother looking at him!:D
