Tis true.

Hope the bloke is remembered for his freakish ability.

Wonder if the injury flared up in the West Coast game of whether it has been a long term thing, I just dont remember seeing anything about it before last round.
He has carried that injury for about a month prior to WC game where he got a knock to it and made it worse. He was a good chance of pulling out of the side against Hawthorn. Thats why we had Watts travelling as an emergency to melbourne that round but Carey decided to play with it. That knock against WC did firther damage tot he injury.

Is it immediate or an end of season job?

Immediate.

Fox Footy announced that there will be a press conference at 11 30 am tomorrow EST, at which Carey will announce his retirement.

A specialist has advised him to retire immediately or risk permanent nerve damage.

Sad to see, but, that said, he had a magnificent career, as if you needed reminding:

North Melbourne Best & Fairest 1992, 1993, 1996, 1998

All-Australian 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 (Captain 96, 98, 99, 00)

AFLPA Most Valuable Player 1995, 1998

North Melbourne Leading Goalkicker 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000; Premiership Player 1996, 1999

Pre-season premiership player 1995, 1998 (Nth Melbourne), 2003 (Crows)

Michael Tuck Medallist (Best player in Pre-Season Grand Final) 1998

North Melbourne Captain 1993 - 2001

272 AFL games, 727 goals.

As a Melbourne fan, I saw the very best of Wayne, as he constantly tore us up over the 90's. Will never forget the 98 preliminary final. Best player I have seen.

I should be devastated - he was my club's hero...I just can't be...I just don't forgive him yet...

It's a terrible shame his final game he wasn't triumphantly adorned in a Roos guernsey...

I understand how you feel. I'm not a Roos fan, but I think it's a shame he didn't play his entire career at North.

Along with Leigh Matthews, the greatest player I've seen.

Carey set to retire

137496am.jpg

A tumultuous week for the Adelaide Football Club will continue on Thursday with Wayne Carey, arguably the greatest player of the modern era, set to announce his retirement from AFL football, effective immediately.

It is believed the Crows will schedule a media conference in Adelaide late on Thursday morning, at which Carey will reveal that the neck injury he suffered during the West Coast clash a fortnight ago is worse than first thought and that a neurosurgeon had advised him that he risked permanent damage if he continued to play.

"At this stage we know he's got a bulging disc and it is a problem," Adelaide football manager John Reid told AAP.

"It doesn't look terrific, (but) we will meet tomorrow morning. It doesn't look good."

On Monday morning, Gary Ayres resigned as coach after four and a half seasons in charge, after being told by the club that his contract would not be renewed at the end of the season.

Interim coach Neil Craig told his first media conference on Wednesday that he hoped Carey would continue playing next year, even though Carey had indicated as recently as Sunday that he was ‘99 per cent likely’ to finish playing at the end of 2004.

Carey, 33, joined Adelaide at the start of 2003 after a magnificent career with the Kangaroos, but one which came to a crashing end in March 2002 when news broke of his affair with Kelli Stevens, the wife of teammate Anthony Stevens.

Carey managed 16 games and 29 goals for the Crows in an injury-interrupted debut season, but hadn’t missed a game in 2004 for the club before suffering the neck injury against the Eagles.

He showed some glimpses this season of his former magic, particularly against Essendon in round eight when he had 17 touches, took nine marks and booted six goals, and two weeks later at the MCG – in what proved to be his last ever match at his most famous venue – when he booted five goals against Hawthorn.

But he will always be remembered as probably the greatest North Melbourne/Kangaroos player of all. Recruited from Wagga and North Adelaide, after being overlooked by the Kangaroos, Carey made his debut for the Roos in 1989 and proceeded to play 271 games and kick 679 goals.

He captained the club from 1993 to 2001, played in the 1996 and 1999 day, and 1995 and 1998 night premierships. He won four club best and fairest awards (1992-3, 1996 and 1998) and was leading goalkicker in 1995 and 1996 and from 1998 to 2000.

Carey played his best football under Denis Pagan, his under 19 coach when he first crossed to Arden Street. He was tough, fearless, a wonderful mark, superb kick and an inspirational leader.

He was also one of the greatest finals and big occasion players the game has seen. Carey’s rise to greatness coincided with his club’s greatest period of sustained onfield success. He played in 21 finals for the Roos and was among the best players in nearly every one of them.

He was also emerged as a superstar at a time the game was making huge inroads commercially and he was able to surpass his considerable onfield earnings with endorsement and media deals.

ADELAIDE ARE DOING A SYDNEY OF 2 YEARS AGO

Two years ago Wayne Schwass retired the week before Eade and Lockett left the club in the same week.

Nigel Smart just retired and now Ayres and Carey are leaving.

The only difference is this happened one round later than it did 2 years ago.

One of the greatest players who ever lived.

One of the less than adequate human beings who ever lived.

Still, can't have everything. Would suit me just fine to be known as the former, even if I'd sold my soul to the devil.

All I can say is Essendon supporters are breathing a lot easier today knowing that he won't be playing against us anymore.

The b@stard always fired up against us. ALWAYS!!

see: Adelaide vs Bombers game this year for a more recent example.

A sad day.

So ends the career of the greatest I've seen. Certainly when we talk about the last thirty of so years most people agree that Matthews, Carey and Ablett are the top 3.

His ability to turn matches in ten minutes of footy was a trait which set him apart from most to play the game. He did it countless times for North Melbourne and unfortunately we never got the chance to really thank him.

A game I think signalled the beginning of the end for Wayne was in 2000 against Essendon in the Qualfying Final (as much as I hate to bring this game up). He literally couldn't jump that day and was basically that restrained in his movement that he would've been better suited to the confines of a wheelchair. Theres no way in the round world he should've played but such was his value to the team and dedication for success he took to the field. There were smaller signs before this game that after playing for ten years in the most physically taxing position on the football field that Wayne's body was deteriating, but I think in this game we saw just how tired, bruised and battered Wayne's body had become.

In the years between 93 and 99 Wayne was supreme and there was simply no better. North was never a one team, but there were times when Wayne put on one man shows. To pick my favourite Carey memoroy is like plucking a needle from a haystack such are there quantity and obvious quality. Ironically it probably is a performance from a losing side. The game against Essendon in Round 17 of 99 was in my opinion equal to the correpsonding fixture between the two sides two years later.

Unfortunately we never had the chance to say a proper goodbye to this great champion. Lets hope Wayne comes back home sooner rather than later.
