Are you against a draw in the GF? I wonder where the club stands on this.

Personally I think it is a terrible thing for our club. Having the players to travel over 2 weeks in a row, and that is if we hosted the prelim at Subi. In 06 if Sydney kicked 1 more point we would have had to travel to Adelaide then Melbourne then Melbourne again in the space of 3 weeks. It would have killed us.

Also for the thousands of fans that forked out big dollars on flights, accomodation and the rest to support the side in the biggest day. Its fine for the Victorian public to support this antiquated rule from an amature suburban comp. They dont need to spend their life savings on getting to the game.

So if you feel like I do then its the perfect time to let the club know our feelings and try and get this changed.

The outcome of the GF should be changed to:
1) The Premier is the winning team of the GF; OR
2) The Premier is the team who drew the GF and higer in ranking in the Regular Season.

There is no need to have extra time

disagree,
the whole 'best team on the day' line would go out the window.

best team on the day.... except for the big day!

would have to be the last drawn grand final,
i like the tradition of the replay, but purely on the disadvantage to interstate teams, surely has to be scraped.

I can see no objection whatsoever to extra time. None. Whats the flaw? Its not contrived, there is no change in the rules, its on the same day, same players, same conditions, just an extra 10 mins (5 each way to take account of factors such as wind). Its a proper ending to a great day.

I would not want contrived results, like soccer, where penalty shoot outs are required - thats a farce, may as well toss a coin but in our game where scoring is much greater, give me extra time to decide all games. You just have to look at NBA games where they do have overtime all season, the overtime games are hardly an abomination, or a corruption of the game - they are simply games in which additional time is played in order to enable a winner (and its actually more problematic for them than it would be for AFL because of the foul limitations and players fouling out).

I honestly can't see any realistic objection to extra time. Feel free to give me one that doesnt involve some completely inane and vacuous use of the word "tradition". Tradition in this context is like arguing for steel boot studs or placing ones cap on the ground to show "the mark" - its dumb.

So, what are the reasons to not have extra time (particularly in a GF)?

extra time as long as the afl lets them have a long break (about the same time as half time), players struggled through the 4th quater let alone extra time

This will be the last GF Replay ever. The AFL all-but said so last night.
whats your source?
it's happened 3 times in the past 110+ years , it's not really a major issue in my opinion

plus it's another excuse to get drunk and watch some more great footy

i'm with mick malthouse = don't change it it's fine how it is

You fly over yesterday? Pay $300+ a night for a shyte room in Melbourne, a couple hundred more for the tickets, take a day or 2 off work?

You planning on doing it again this week?

Or you just not really think through your first statement? Which given your idea of a good time is "get drunk" seems quite likely. :)

Well i would still have seen an amazing game of footy and i could tell people for the rest of my life that i was at that drawn grand final.

Reality is mate neither team was good enough to win on the day , a rematch is a perfectly reasonable outcome to this very rare occurance.

Anyway i don't see anywhere in Demetrious comments that he wants to change the rule over draws in grand finals - it's a tradition get over it.

But Mr Demetriou said today the AFL hierarchy were proud of the unique nature of their code and of not following the lead of other sports, such as soccer.

“Of course there was a strange feeling after the game, but it would have been even more strange and hollow for a team that loses after extra time,” Mr Demetriou said.

“I think we've all seen the lack of satisfaction from a World Cup or major game that's decided on penalties.

“The premier team this week can reasonably say it's one of the great teams of all time.”

Mr Demetriou said given there have been only 146 drawn games since the VFL started in 1897, and three in grand finals, there was no cause for a knee-jerk reaction.

He said the 100,016 spectators in attendance yesterday witnessed “one of the most memorable grand finals in the history of our game”.

“As we sit here, we are not of a mind to changing the rules, we don't change rules as a knee-jerk reaction to something that's happened yesterday,” Mr Demetriou said.

“I'm sure that at a point in time the AFL executive and commission will review and consider all of its options, but I remind everybody that it is a unique nature of the game.

“We all went into yesterday's game understanding that one of the options was a draw, it wasn't a new rule ... and it was one of the great experiences to be part of.”

Mr Demetriou said next week's replay would have more members of the competing clubs present than any previous grand final, given there will be less corporate tickets sold.

He said the competing clubs and players would also be financially compensated by the AFL for having to play again.

He predicted a “very low-key” grand final week the second time around, with considerably fewer functions, including no parade on Friday.

I was there last week and have no problem with there being a replay.

To be honest, I feel as though it would have been incredibly unfair to have such a match decided with extra time. The way it will play out, they now have another two hours to compete for the Grand Final.

At the end of the day noone remembers who came second, and I don't think it would have been a fitting end to play it out through extra time. Anyone complaining about not being able to see a result who actually attended the game is just plain stupid. We got to witness an amazing game (hey, I'd rather have seen us win but whatever), a once in a generation thing as stats would have it.

And for those who missed it, you've got a chance to attend. Definitely annoying if you had plans, but that's life. If people miss a trip to Bali and that's the biggest concern in their life, get a reality check. A lot worse things happen in life.

I posted this in a different thread, but I find the debate interesting anyway.

All the online polls seem to suggest people are more against the replay than for it, but I really don't see that. Definitely fine with it for me, from the perspective of:

a) A Collingwood (i.e. GF team) fan
b) Someone who attended
c) Someone who will have to rearrange work commitments to attend next week.

Love the footy, and this is such a rare, unique occasion, I was just glad to be a part of it. And yes, I would've preferred to win, but we'll do that next week :)

The lamest of lame arguments.

You in favour of bringing back the Diamond instead of the Square? Removing the 50m arc? Reinstating the 15m penalty? 18 a side with 2 reserves? Placing your cap on the ground to show the mark? No interchange? 2.30 Saturday start for all games? No interstate finals? No interstate teams? ...

I could go on and on and on .... but one suspects its beyond you ... enjoy getting pissed ...

By the way, what do you think of the new tradition, being extra time in the Grand Final this week?

Demetriou has dug his heels in on this issue before and he generally refuses to ever be pushed. This is a typical example. Yep, we've ****ed around a lot of people, included our Broadcasters, fans, the spring racing carnival, the A-League, our own draft camp etc etc but **** it, I am Andrew Demetriou and I do whatever the he'll feels right to me.

Expect an AFL Commissioned report, released quietly mid next year that recommends extra time on Commercial Grounds and is somehow connected to the TV rights deal. Then it will be his idea and his ego will cope better with the change.

Personally, I hope full time this week ends in a draw. It would end all arguments about the merits or otherwise of extra time.

So you're comparing things that affect every single game of AFL to things that affect 3 games in a 110+ year period?

It's a unique part of the game , you can't compare AFL to soccer where every 2nd game is a draw.

Its awesome. GF day is one of my favourite days of the year. Its like having 2 Australia days.

Or 2 Anzac days....

I personally love the replay - another week on the piss with the boys.

I just wish there was another replay of the game - i barely remember the second half!

I wonder wtf is going to happen with the Premiership DVD that gets released every season.

But I must say, love the replay. :thumbsu:

I like the replay. The issue I have with extra time is that then the best team of 100 or 90 minutes wins. It is supposed to be the best team over 80 minutes on the day. Not the fittest team that can outlast the other.

Though no doubt the result would have been good on Saturday with Collingwood being over-run.
