I'm sure that most readers appreciate the time and effort that goes into your list. That said, your prediction of Ben Eckerman going at pick 8 a couple of years ago highlights the difficulty of such a task. He in fact went 40 + and was delisted this year.

I'm pretty confident that your top 10 will bear no resemblance to the real deal.

12. James Sellar (Melbourne). Will be excused his poor championship and remain regarded as one of the better key forward options. Might be one that could struggle to adapt to the AFL. At 195cm he probably can’t ruck and he lacks the pace for the backline. Up forward he shapes as an old-fashioned lead-up, pack-marking CHF. Superb leadership, good skills. Probably in the Nick Holland, David Schwarz style. A strong young midfield group should see the Dees draft tall

I was abit dissapointed with this thread i thought it was going to be better. i know it only ure oppinion but the draft wil go nothing like that.

But isn't that time from last year's draft camp? I don't think he tested anything like that well this year.

I appreciate the effort that's gone into this, Weaver. It's nice to see a phantom draft that's not simply a regurgitation of the 1000 phantom drafts that preceded it.

A question: do you rate Trevor Oliver at all?

Good work Weaver. Putting your phantom Top 80 draft out there in the open. I think some people have been caught up in all the hype of this draft and have been accustomed to "normaller" looknig drafts. I agree Riewoldt and jetta could slip that far. Riewoldt because he is more of a flanker type, while Jetta because of his height. His kicking can be a mixed bag at some times. Brisbane could certainly have a look at Proud with pick 4. I am sure that if it is a choice between a QLD lad and a person from another state who have aroudn the same ability and potential then the QLD player will always be taken first. Interesting O'Keefe is up there. Hasn't even been mentioned in top 30 in most drafts. I disagree with Sellar however. He is not that slow.. he is quite mobile but was sick or something at Championships.


Very ver good read. I'm pretty sure yours will be a LOT LOT more closer than some people think. Great effort and work.

Good effort, and the best thing about it is that you have predicted trends of who will fall and who will rise, because if history has said anything to us it's that the Top 10 will look NOTHING like the cookie-cutter efforts that get thrown up by the majority of users.

However, I do have issue with the Collingwood picks - We reach for Shane Edwards at #10, and pick up a player that we have absolutely NO need for in doing it. We are DESPERATE for a young, inside midfielder, and I would doubt we'd pass over Armitage in this situation, as we are apparently very high on him. Hislop would be another we'd consider.

There aren't many top-notch inside mids in the draft - I'd imagine that we will walk away from the draft with one of Selwood, Proud, Armitage, Hislop or Connors wearing a Collingwood jumper.

Well done weaver, its not an easy thing to prepare and then all the flak that comes with it. There are a few surprises in there, but at least with this its you backing your own judgement on what you've seen.

Awesome Weaver! Great read, I'll be refering to this an a couple of other phantom drafts when the real thing is on. From an Essendon perspective I'd be happy with that mix.
Top-class tall backman, a few good mids, raw utility and a gamble. Perfect.
Forget Jacobs, we won't use that pick i don't think, don't need rucks anyway.

Thats gotta be the best effort i have seen in along time very impressive! Essendon Supporter just don't think we will take Gumby, Hansen or Leunberger just thinking we have aging legs in ohter places with Hird's rotation through midfield coming to its last year i think Selwood's ability to find the ball in tight spaces in packs would be a great replacement for the games' greatest! Love that you have shown some respect to Danny O Keefe (9) i play at the same club at him in Warrnambool very good mates and his ability to find space and deliver the ball lace out is impecable as is Hogans (48) his fitness engine is unbeliveable also very good mates and played much footy for and against him and great skill also

Don't agree with your Renouf theory, he is a reluctant handballer, will back himself for a shot at goals and for a big bloke I believe his foot skills are very acceptable. I honestly believe he will go before Hampson. Easily beat him in state championships, the 3km run will put him on notice with recruiters and his two games in the AFLQ finals especially grand final at chb on Wellar were excellent and really does add more to his resume than just ruck. I was surprised as many to see him in these back roles and kept saying its time for him to go into the ruck, but coaching staff at southport stuck to their guns and he performed accordingly.

1. Bryce Gibbs (Carlton). This is an era of dominant midfielders and Gibbs is by far the brightest midfield prospect available. Genuinely football smart and takes up intelligent, dangerous positions, accumulates high kick numbers, uses the ball superbly and creates and kicks goals. Not a speedster and probably not a hard-ball player; very much in the Ben Cousins or Nick Stevens playmaker mould. Will play next year and will be a preseason favourite for the Rising Star. At 187cm he is very much the modern midfielder who could develop into a Lenny Hayes type centre square presence.

17. Clayton Collard (Carlton). Collard is better but less credentialed than the higher-profile Jetta. Has a hint of Gary Ablett jnr about him. Collard might develop into a midfielder in time and alongside Betts gives the Blues some flair and genuine game-breaking pace and talent across half-forward.

19. Nathan Brown (Carlton) – A solid bodied man-marker, Brown has size and bulk but is deceptively quick. Obvious comparisons to Rutten. Enough speed off the mark to play at fullback as well. Thrives on the physical contest and seems to lift a level after he has been thumped a few times. Brown would free Thornton from FB allow O’hAilpin and Bower to run. Pagan would be keen on the second coming of Mick Martyn.

35. Ben Reid (Carlton) – Long-term projects as a key forward but at the moment is more likely to be seen on the wing of flanks. Extremely light and tends to show a very much an outside brand of forward play. Not completely dissimilar to Jarrad Waite and will probably remain a player who relies more on skills than pack crashing. Probably 20kg off a playing weight but will be one of the youngest taken.

51. Sam Sheldon (Carlton) – Son of Kenny and eligible under father-son rule but probably not quite worth sacrificing the pick. Is a clever outside wingman. Predominately played school football and missed the tail end of the TAC season with injury – which means he has not had too much exposure. Good athlete with reasonable skills.

67. Tom Sheldon (Carlton) – Nephew of Ken. True winger who struggled for consistency and will need to get fitter to play out full games. Good skills and was amongst the best handful in the Allies game on his wing. With the Blues axing Sporn, Longmuir and co they could be looking to bring in a new batch of receivers. The Sheldon cousins would be a good choice on merit with the added bonus of being popular in the stands.

How do you know? Expect at least a few big sliders. There is always a slider. Every year. Weaver is predicting Reid, Sellar and Jetta and a few others to slide while some go up the pecking order. He will be a lot more closer than you think.

that was 6 months, 1 month before his ilness. He will get much quicker then that with a weights program at his club

14. Tim Houlihan (Adelaide). A stand-out at under-16 level who improved rapidly over the course of the season to be amongst North Ballarat’s best by the time of the finals campaign. At the start of the season a pencil thin winger nervous of traffic, by the close of the season doing superb defensive jobs across half-back. Quick, elite stamina, good skills and runs with the ball. Loves to weave his way down field with baulks. Very much the modern winger. Crows love the taller, running utility types and have based their gameplan around runners.

32. Jarryd Allan (Adelaide) – Impressed late in season 2005 as a rake-thin backman. Started there this season and was in good form. Swung forward late in the season and showed himself to be the best FF in the TAC Cup. Played some important minutes in the ruck and at CHB for Metro. Might not be quite quick or athletic enough to make the jump to AFL as a forward but could be a solid project as a key defender. Adelaide won’t want a gorilla type with Meesan and Maric already on their books.

48. Simon Hogan (Adelaide) – The star of the draft camp registering a series of eye-catching test results - quite possibly enough to vault him ahead of the pack of rovers into the draft proper. Is extremely light and was in truth a fringe midfielder in a very deep Geelong rotation. Spent most of his time floating around the wings and flanks. The Crows are the club of the sports scientists and will have circled his name after camp and could feel they can find a way to use him.

64. Mitchell Brown (Adelaide) – Twin brother of Nathan. Nathan found a niche at fullback after being an adequate FF. While Nathan was thriving Mitchell played ruck and CHF and showed a love for the argy-bargey and packs, earning comparisons to Cam Mooney as a mobile small ruckman. Not overly athletic by modern standards. Could well become a good fullback if given a trial (if Nathan can do it Mitchell probably can as well). Tough as nails – played some of his best football with concussion.

80. Alex Hutchins (Adelaide) – Centreman who is a member of the AFL/AIS academy but missed the Championships after not being able to put an early season injury behind him. Reasonable skills but a question mark on his pace and running ability. Perhaps lacks the stand out qualities to lift him above the crowd.

Good work as per usual but from Adelaide's perspective you have got the needs all wrong.

We are in desperate need of KPPs. Craig and our recruting manager have come out and said we will be looking at KPP and with 5 vacancies on the list I would suspect at least 3 of those picks will go on KPPs.

You have us picking up 4 midfielders and 1 tall. Thats just WAY WAY unbalanced and out of whack AND against what the AFC want to get out of this draft.

Well done, good to see some original thinking. And kudos for putting up your previous efforts as well.

A far more logical look at some players, particularly Jetta/Collard and Sellar and views that seem to be based on an appreciation of AFL needs rather than junior standouts.
