I just love Garlett even though Wellinghams great, i think Garlett provides not just those quick goals a game but also some great f50 pressure i think he had 9 inside 50 tackles or something like that V West coast (first time?) Noted its west coast but 9 is quite extroadinary on top of a few goals?.

Wellingham though really turned it round from being reportedly up for trade to a more than handy rotation player through collingwoods deep midfield.

Just positional preference i guess.

kicked 40 goals from memory, probably one of the better small fwds going around, both players should only get better, "should" being the word there though, doesnt always work out that way.

For the sake of this discussion, let's consider a 'close' game one which is decided by 2 goals or less.

We had 3 of them - Fremantle x 2, and Sydney.

In those games, Garlett kicked 7 goals. That's over 2 per game, whilst he averaged just under 2 per game for the entire season.

In terms of disposals, in those 3 games he gathered 44 disposals, at an average of 14.6. Over the course of the season he gathered 245 disposals, an average of 12.3.

The fact that Garlett kicked more goals, and gathered more disposals in close games than in blowouts, should tell any person that has the slightest idea what they are on about, that Garlett didn't struggle in close games. Indeed, it is the exact opposite that is the reality of the situation.

In summary - you are an idiot. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. But hey, we're used to that by now. Keep your rubbish on the bay.

that was the key IMO, that put a massive rocket up his ars, i rate him higher than beams and sidebottom, in GF 2 he was sublime IMO, shouldve won the norm smith IMO.

As for the poll, both players are guns TBH I think it's early to determine which one is better. Also irrelevant I feel, they'll both get much better with time

Good comparison in terms of draft position and age. But they're extremely different players, despite having similar natural assets. Wellingham is an explosive midfielder who plays outside and inside; Garlett is an explosive crumber.

I was watching the third quarter of the grand final replay again the other day, and I really noticed Wellingham's influence in the packs and around the stoppages. Of course, one quarter a tiny sample size, but it's the only footy I've seen for a while. People severely underrate his ability to win contested footy and get the hard ball. He throws himself at the contest, and has immense strength for someone his size [either that or he's slippery], as he can always be seen shrugging tackles in a congested area and making space to run into. His outside game is quite good too, though at times his kicking lacks polish. I think that he plays the inside role better, but Swan/Pendlebury/Ball generally fulfill that role the most.

The best comparison I can think of for Wellingham is Chris Judd in his West Coast days. At Carlton, he plays exclusively inside, but at West Coast he could play both. Wellingham obviously isn't anywhere near the level Judd was, but it's a stylistic comparison. He doesn't accumulate huge numbers, he generally doesn't get involved in the 1-2-3-4 handball chains. His touches come in and around stoppages, which is why he has a large influence on our success or failure in any given week.

Anyway, I went way off track... just thinking out loud about that discussion on Wellingham's 'inside' ability. I think Wellingham is and always will be the better player, but I do rate Garlett. Extremely talented and a valuable asset to have in any forward line. Perhaps could be better with a gun forward to crumb off. Both great rookie selections, that's for sure.

clearly wellingham is ahead at the moment IMO, a better performed player ATM

don't get me wrong garlett is a freak in terms of his skill level with the football, and i think he could end up being a better player... however that is too close a call who will be so early in their careers especially with both having breakout years this year

for me garlett is one who could really move into the midfield and do some damage, and he doesn't need to get a lot of the ball to be damagin or creative... and i love that in a player... very similar to Bennell from Melbourne, against sydney i though he was one of our best, yet after the game i learnt he only had 12 touches .... he seems to make every touch count... and from what i have seen of garlett he is exactly the same

i honestly can't choose which one i would prefer... even though Wellingham is ahead (for reasons stated in the last paragraph)

Wellingham was hugely improved as well, did some very nice defensive roles as well as winning good amounts of the ball himself. If i was recruiting for Essendon i'd take Wellingham but if i was recruiting for a new team i'd take Garlett, as i just think he has the potential to be really great. People tend to underate quality small forwards, but there really aren't that many real quality ones around. Probably only Lecras and Milne consistently then Garlett would be the next level down. Of course there are a few players that could play there full time and dominate (G.Ablett, Chapman etc) but still it's a very handy position to have some quality in.

a better poll would've been dick V garlett, but with dick being injured lately it was clear that garletts ahead, if both were fully fit it would make a very good poll though IMO.

also, betts is a better small fwd than garlett at present, you have to add him to the lecras/milne list as well, the blues are pretty much set for small fwds, possibly 2 of the top 5 in the game at present and another one who's just starting to hit his straps, but in saying that i doubt your going to win a premiership with 3 genuine small fwds, the acid will be if they can cut it in the midfield rotations.

It's close, but still think Dick is more talented, we just haven't seen enough of him yet. Would have thought a Melbourne supporter of all people could see that though considering he's kicked 9 goals in the past two Queens Birthday clashes.
