Quite possibly the concept of the WAFL beagles for 2022 will be sunk before the season even begins

With borders closed for the foreseeable future it’s probable that Fremantle and west coast will have to relocate to the east coast to start the season leaving no AFL listed players in WA to play WAFL.

There won’t be a side

That's a distinct possibility now. 👎

Just looking on the WAFL site at who is currently registered with us, does anyone know anything about any of these players who appear to be new additions this season?

Joshua Brooks Burke - 192cm 24yo with 11 senior WAFL games for Perth
Harry Creasey - 186cm 24yo with 24 senior WAFL games for East Freo, hasn't been in WAFL system since 2019
Edward Curley - 173cm ex-East Freo colt, originally from Mullewa
Josh Edwards - 199cm ex-Peel colt
Jack Eastough - 182cm ex-Swans colt, originally from Rovers in Geraldton (not sure how he got from there to Swans)
Mitch Henderson - 184cm 26yo with 41 senior WAFL games for Perth
Jed Kemp - 170cm ex-Subi colt, originally from Railways in Kalgoorlie, nephew of Tommy
John Levien - 182cm 23yo with 39 senior WAFL games for Perth and South Freo
Darby McCarthy - 175cm 25yo with 40 reserves games for Perth
Andries Mercer - 183cm 26yo with 2 senior games and 82 reserves games for Perth
Caelen Penny - 180cm 23yo with 1 senior game and 32 reserves games for ... you guessed it, Perth
Jarrod Pickett - 179cm 25yo with AFL experience at GWS and Carlton
Ambrose Ryan - 179cm 23yo with 25 senior WAFL games for East Freo

Ambrose Ryan is mates with Suma jnr. Was a small forward who hit the scoreboard often for East Freo in the colts comp. Haven't taken notice of what he's done since then.

Ed Curley is another small fwd from East Freo, he had a tiny bit of AFL interest apparently. Was in the WA under 19s squad, don't think he played though.

Burke - handy swingman flanker - does his best work in the forward line. Fringe league player but will have a game or two where he looks absolutely quality.
Creasey - was a solid lockdown defender with East Freo - played in the guts in the SWFL
Curley - does some nice things up forward but remains to be seen if he can make the step up from colts after playing about 4 seasons of colts footy
Edwards - tall. Quite telling Peel picked 17yo Broadbent over him to play league footy last year
Eastough - don't know a lot about him. Played in the back line as far as I can reacll.
Henderson - rubbish. Tries really hard but a symptom of the problem at Perth, a player with limited skill like him shouldn't be playing 40 league games
Kemp - ball magnet in the juniors. Quite small, probably doesn't crack it at league level
Levien - solidly built small defender. Does the little things right, doesn't get a heap of the footy
McCarthy - exciting twos small forward. Quite crafty, should have been given a league game by Perth at some point
Mercer - battler. Demoted to the back pocket after falling out of favour as an inside mid in the reserves. If he plays, you're in the s**t.
Penny - not good enough
Pickett - if he's motivated and fit he'll be a star
Ryan - actually a handy wing-half forward. A lot of promise. He is someone who should play every game.

Interesting to see there are four rounds of WAFL practice matches this year before the actual season gets underway on the 15th of April, which is when Round 5 of the AFL is.

The first round of them was the weekend just gone but the Beagles didn't have a game. Probably for the best, that would've gotten ugly.

We're taking on East Freo this Saturday at 10am, can't imagine they'll stream these practice games though.

Have they always started the WAFL this late with so many practice games? I can't remember beyond last year when from memory it started in Round 3.

Definitely later than usual

they are starting the wafl year later after they figured out that playing the wafl grand final after the afl grand final will likely get a bigger crowd.sanfl have played their grand final the week after the afl grand final for a long time and they always get bigger crowds then when the wafl played their grand final the week before the afl grand final. .the only way to play the wafl grand final after the afl grand final is to start the wafl season later as the afl season has 22 rounds and the wafl have only 18 rounds.it gets down to money.the only way for the wafl to play 21/22 rounds in line with the afl is more money for all the wafl clubs and we know that won't happen.

Each club in the WAFL is playing three practice matches over four weeks. The Eagles and five other clubs had a bye in the first round.

No, traditionally the WAFL started the week before the AFL season when there was nine clubs and it was a 20 game per club season, this was common place for a number of years. The start time of the season has varied in recent years due to COVID-19 and the Eagles becoming the 10th side in the competition which resulted in the fixture decreasing to a double round-robin home and away season. The WAFL has generally aimed for a start in early April of late but they have pushed the season back this year as they want to play the Grand Final the week after the AFL Grand Final, this was what happened last year and the attendance at the GF was almost 30,000 people, the best in two decades.

It's a good initiative by the WAFL and hopefully there will be another strongly attended GF this year as well.

West Coast’s WAFL pre-season clash against East Fremantle has been cancelled in an ominous sign for the WAFL season ahead.

The Eagles were set to take on East Fremantle at New Choice Homes Park from 10am, but the game won’t go ahead because injuries and COVID-19 meant West Coast could not field a team.

The West Australian understands West Coast pulled all of their AFL players from the clash, which included returning premiership defender Liam Duggan because of fears of further COVID-19 cases within the squad.

Five players have entered the AFL’s health and safety protocols, while the team is set to take a squad of 26 to Victoria for their AFL clash with North Melbourne on Sunday - including WAFL players Declan Mountford and Stefan Giro.

i would hope that when the wafl season starts proper we won't have this same situation.i think west coast have a obligation this season to field a wafl team everyweek.they may need to have more top up players from amateurs.i don't think it will be only afl that will be impacted by covid protocols.i wonder how it will affect the wafl competition as well.

If he can't get a game at a rabble like East Freo then I question just how good he is :cute:
Gee the only rabble here is WCE and their reserves team.....already can't field a team and it's preseason.....swallow your ego and let the listed local boys go back to their clubs of origin and allocate the listed ES boys amongst the other WAFL clubs.....atleast that way they will get a game of footy each weekend whilst not playing AFL.
