Do you know how much Eagles go over soft cap and what is the tax?
No idea how much we go over by, all we know is that Pyke said we spend over the soft cap every year.

The tax is exponential for every year you are over, so it's unfeasible to do it long term.

The aflpa won't let them pay less which is fair enough since it's just less money going to the players overall.

But there should be much more flexibility with list spots.

Every year we see a bunch of state league players get drafted and look like they belong. Let teams have anything from 40-50 players. Then the struggling clubs can give a bunch more guys like that get a go.

Maybe 10 more guys get to chase their dreams, the standards at training probably improve with more mature players and there's less pressure to pay your good players way overs just to make the cap.

We are paying the players though.

AFL rules lead rebuilding teams down a path of overpaying senior players because the more 1st to 3rd year players you have the higher the proportion of your salary cap is dictated for you. All the hoo ha about paying Harley Reid 20 gazillion dollars over 1000 years he still gets a 3 year draftee contract as a first round pick. If WC have 20 players getting $100k and Geelong has say 10, then by extension the same amount of money shared between 35 Geelong players is shared between 25 WC players which is arse backwards.

I agree that mandating list spots is an unnecessary constraint. Just make it minimum 40 and if you want to have 45 or 50 or whatever then good luck to you. It's not the EPL where you can just have two squads worth of players. IMO the AFL could easily introduce a sliding scale.

0-5 draftees: 100% of the cap
5-10: 95%
10-15: 90%
15-20: 85%

True. Hopefully we can get a bunch of father sons soon and then cheat the salary cap to keep our team together.

Diamond buffet at Crown anyone?

Perhaps a couple of nights in Munich on the sponsor's dollar?
Yep, Stuff em.

Does that mean the back to back premiers and other teams currently playing finals stop getting their assistwnce every year as well?

Happy to receive zero assistance. As long as everyone stops getting it.

Fair?

I think that's fair.

Or maybe your club could hire competent people to manage the list so you don't need to deflect with sooking about soft cap equalisation. West Coast dug themselves the hole they're in, they can dig themselves out.

You’ve already received assistance, last year.

WC are digging themselves out.

So did you. And the year before. And two years before that. And two years before that. And the year before that...

And we are a battler club just trying to grow the game.

I’m not against the eagles receiving more assistance either, so you don’t need to get too worked up.

I’m just holding old Obeanie1 accountable after he’s claimed that WCE have never received any supporter.

Yep, breaching the salary cap would make that very easy.

So you think WCE's only way out of their horribly mismanaged list now is to just cheat? I guess that's exactly what the Fever did so thats why people from Perth think it's a viable solution LOL

People from Victoria invented cheating:

We don't have the luxury of paying people outside the cap to play/work at our club, despite the fact it's very difficult to attract non-WA people to Perth.

Honestly think soft cap space will help more than draft picks, especially next year when the academy is looking ok as an option for us to pick players up from .

For some reason we just can’t use our competitive advantages unlike well everyone else

Good point about soft cap but maube you could help me with the eagles financial situation

From whats being mentioned the eagles have so much profit every year and really have only a few places they can use this excess money on the team.

Lets just say they made $15 mill profit for argument sake
With such a young team and needing the best development coaches why wouldnt they just throw a shed load of cash at the soft cap which is $8 mil just allocate an extra $4mil and pay the tax ?

What else can you use all that money on

Soft cap shmoft cap. You can get Michelangelo in to paint your ceiling but it's still not the Sistine Chapel.

WC currently have 14 players from the last 3 drafts plus 9 rookies. We also have Maric, Dewar and McCarthy on the main list as Cat B/MSD upgrades. and some role players from 2021/22 who have passed their rookie deals.

Compare that to the Crows (alphabetical) and they only used 7 picks in the last 3 drafts. Contending teams have different list profiles and (drumroll....) better players that in theory should be paid more.

Given the AFL mandate draftee salaries there should be more flexibility in the salary cap. If WC are paying 20 guys $100-200k a year because they have to it seems ridiculous that they also have to pay the other 20-25 enough that the TPP is 95% of Brisbane or Geelong or whoever.
I have said that for years

The amount you can bank should be 10% per year for 4/5 years and also have another 10% of your player cap that you can use or transfer to the soft cap as clubs like Richmond, Eagles , Bombers , North really can only over pay kids just to even meet the cap floor then by the time they are good the kids have already been over paid and reach free agency and have to still pay the extra to the same kids that have been overpaid when not deserved that.

Pretty sure that extra soft cap would do wonders for fast tracking development

You need to start encouraging players to buy farms with Cattle
Hungry jacks could buy that beef ftom players farms at double what they are valued

* e.g Hawkins/Cameron

When did I say that? Never said that.

Posters who misquote and gas light the conversation I rank as the lowest form of poster on BF. Add gloating about AFL assisted flags whilst being pumped full of welfare year in year out.........that is a podium finish.

Your a troll gloating about flags propped up by welfare and handouts. Wash rince repeat for the Lions. Cant win one without it.

Welfare flags dont grow the game, they slowly destroy its integrity

Enjoy your next nepo flag gift wrapped by AFL House.

PS your on ignore with the other trolls so dont bother.

They need a PP. They are absolutely hopeless.

Finishing last and chasing clubs playing finals who get assistance every year does make rebuilding feel hopeless at times yes.

The PP that ended up in the mid 20's Eagles were forced into trading to the Lions wont move the neddle when the premiers get priority access to the best mid in the draft at a discount. After buying the Eagles captain as a RFA at no draft cost to the back to back premiers.

Its a tough gig rebuilding for some clubs.

WC need to start digging up. I agree they should get a North like packed this year but I still don’t think they have a very good development system due to their WAFL team.

More kids in a broken system that hasn’t been fixed means more losses for the whole club. The standalone team should have been ditched and alinement with either Perth or East Perth put back on the table. The board just can’t share control or admit it was a terrible mistake.

Whatever the AFL does next, they need to start putting more emphasis on not sacrificing players' careers in the interests of balance.

West Coast are a slightly different beast because they are a club that knows how to be successful and won't stay down perpetually. They'll win a flag in the next 10 years. It's what they are.

However, the number of promising careers wrecked because of all of the handout picks to North, Gold Coast, Carlton and the likes, where the culture was to continue to expect handouts to take you up the ladder every year rather than really fixing the development program and trying to build a winning culture the right way. The young guys forced to play in poor systems with bad cultures are the collateral.

You said that WCE has never received assistance from the AFL and that our flags and other teams flags are tainted because we’ve received assistance. It’s good stuff.

Damn straight. Our assistance comes from the gods of football.

Just like when a doctor saves a patient's life.

It's through the grace of the footy gods that WCE have received divine help.

The AFL is merely the instrument of their will.

love that every single WCE fan response to this thread is whataboutism mostly about Geelong and a little bit about Brisbane

You're not getting a priority pick because your club administration are bed wetters. Maybe the Tim Kelly trade wasn't worth it after all? :$

1. We already got a priority pick.

2. We didn't start this thread.

3. We haven't had the benefit of getting the #1 pick in multiple years whilst contending for/winning flags, nor have we had our salary cap indiscretions to keep our contending list together swept under the rug.

4. If we did either of #3, we'd shut the **** up about a club at the bottom of the ladder and keep our opinions to ourselves due to how privileged our clubs our with the AFL's help.
