Based on what we saw in India, what key lessons can the Australian selectors take into account when picking the squad for the Ashes later this year?

And who from the Australian team that went to India will be on the plane to England and who will be the unfortunate ones forced to spend the winter back in Australia and wait until the 2023-24 home summer for redemption?

It seems that Warner has the pass to play as long as he likes....despite only 2 test hundreds outside of Australia since 2014 (both in Bangladesh in 2017)

That stat alone is damming.

He should not be picked for England.

Part of me wants to give him farewell test for the WC final but then ....

What worries me is that he will be picked for the ashes for the first two tests and will do nothing. Get out around the wicket put pressure on the middle order and we lose a test ...then he gets dropped and we have to introduce a new opener who will struggle to find there feet

Just make the decision and retire him..its not hard

And the problem for Australia and David Warner is that Warner's nemsis in the 2019 Ashes series, Stuart Broad, will be waiting for him. If Warner does get selected in the Australian squad, expect to see Broad give Warner a hard time in the Test series like he did back in 2019.

Warner is past it however anyone who thinks Travis Head is a genuine opener need a reality check.

Opening in Asia is totally different, he'll rightly be back at 5 going forward which means our options are basically Warner or Harris.

I'd still take has been Warner over "prime" Harris.

Horses for courses works well enough, provided you get time either prior to or during the tour to adapt to local conditions. Pick your form batters. Don't be afraid to throw the magnets around while on tour; people are going to bitch about what you do regardless of what it is, they'll complain if you do nothing.

Treat no-one as essential, and plan for key absences should they occur. Bring bowlers you know are up to it, and ******* use them when they're there; don't use the same 4 bowlers for an entire series, give players rests should they need them.

Block out the sound of the media, because they're never going to have anything worthwhile to listen to should you lose.

Year the Warner situation is inevitable really, Broad or Anderson around the wicket and then the ball will either crash into off stump or nicked to the wicketkeeper. I mean that is how Shami got him out both times, imagine what Broad would do to him.

We were 2 down for not much and expecting Labs/Smith to save the day again is optimistic at best. We are going to stubbornly persist with him until we are 2-0 down in the series and then it might be too late... again.

All I learnt is I'm in no hurry to ever return to India. Annoying waste of time and won't help us at all in winning the Ashes.

Agree on the first two, for the third think Smith is fine as VC and to cover if Cummins is not available.

Some series rose tinted glasses about Smith's captaincy based on one good Test in Indore on an awful pitch. Was no great shakes as a captain in his previous run and it ended as badly as it possibly could be imagined.

Hard to take much for the Ashes from that because the pitches are so different.

Obviously need better preparation in country but we are already doing that.

Perhaps don't take a bunch of injured seamers on tour either.

Carey needs to value his wicket a lot more or his spot is in danger.

Their was a double whammy here. South Africa, West Indies so poor our tailenders didn't have to bat much, then they just rest after the tests.
BBL needed the publicity as most decent overseas imports went to South Africa or Middle East for better money.
Having a shorter big bash, thrn getting players to play a red ball game at home is better preparation in future.
Also on tour, play a proper first class warm up game. If it rains, pitch is crap you can still practice ( only indoors) anyway.
