What if: How good would have Brad Smith have been for us

Hard to say really, you think he would have been ok but there is also tonnes of guys who blitzed it at WAFL level who didn't convert it to AFL level. Guys like Jason Heatley, Daniel Schell, Ryan Murphy etc would regularly kick big bags but come their shot in the AFL weren't able to hit the same form.

Heatley did have one or two particularly productive years with the Saints.

Felt he would have been the missing piece for us in that era. Would have really made a difference as he was a quality full forward. Sure, we had Lynch and he excelled in 2006 but he was not a FF like Smith was.

Always have been dirty the other clubs (pretty sure it was Sheedy led, too) cockblocked our request to put Smith on the rookie list after his two knee recos. Of course they changed the rules soon after.

That was the most ****ed part

What about freo utensil blocking us when North nearly sold us an 'away' game at subi.

You would need to be some sort of sadist to bring this up. Looked poised to tear the AFL apart. Big body great hands and a nice kick sitting in front of one of the best midfields ever.

Sucks they changed the rules but after 2 knee recons it would have been hard for him to get a game.

IIRC didn't Darren Glass talk him up as a gun, really hard to match up to in training.

I don't know much about Smith but I remember he was rated very highly - much higher than Wilson. But Wilson could've been some player too had he been 2-3 inches taller. Had a ton of injuries, both as an AFL and WAFL player, which was no doubt spurred on by his kamikaze playing style. It was a frustrating period for us in terms of key forwards. Lynch was OK on his day and did well in 2006 aided by that amazing midfield. Hansen played his role well but was about average for a starting key position player in the AFL.

There was a world of talent in Wilson, Smith, Travis Gaspar, Andrew McDougal and even Michael Gardiner when he become a key forward after the emergence of Dean Cox. For a wide variety of reasons not one of them made any huge impact as a key forward. Frustrating. Potentially the difference between a flag and multiple flags through that period.

We didn't trade hard enough for a FF. Would have been the missing link.

Imagine we has Fev from 2004-2007.

Was he any good? Better than Wilson ?
yeah he was the driving force for Subiaco's triple premiership 2006-2008.
140 games for subi, 530 goals. think he was Subi's full forward in their team of the century (though i thought Jason Heatly should have been - 370 goals in 73 games, what a legend).

Carlton wanted Gardiner and Hansen.
