What makes a good commentator?

Someone with excellent knowledge who just calls the game without trying to create their own celebrity.
Excitement is good, but no catch phrases and definitely, DEFINITELY no favourite players fapped all over and called out as being "champions" and "geniuses" when even executing the most bland, high % play.
All players and teams called equally on merits - No opinions.

What is it about a commentator that makes you want to listen to them whilst watching a game?
Not working for Channel 7 is a good start. Flogs or flogs by association the lot of them.

I have some improvements.

One, Brian Taylor needs to be louder, angrier, and have access to a time machine. Two, whenever BT is not on the air, all the other commentators should be asking "Where's BT"? Three...

1. Not a former player
2. Not biased to a club
3. Has excellent football knowledge
4. Has excellent statistical knowledge
5. Has a media or journalism degree

The no.1 problem with commentators is that they are former players who show incredible bias. There is a total conflict of interest. I have openly heard Mark Ricciutto say that he 'Wanted Adelaide to win' one night on Triple M. There is no accountability for these idiots. They are all overpaid and undereducated idiots.

Playing down brilliant football, talking down bad football

Outrage in regards to incidental/accidental contact between players

Carefully worded statements that put questions in the minds of fans about the lifestyle of players, or contract status, and have no accountability because it was from a "source"

Go over the top at every opportunity

Endorse anything the the league or rule committee implement

great game if footy tonight, but Bruce Macaveyney as good as he has been over so many years, has got to go. Overcooks everything! Player"s kick is clearly going though for a point and he is calling it a goal. Calls great kick when clearly the players kick is no good. His word selection for the play is not on que and dated and continually misreads the play. Great with statistics but his time in calling the game is over.

So people want a commentator who has good knowledge, focuses only on the game, and doesnt make it all about them.

I recommend Adam Papalia. Relatively new, yet is one of, if not the best commentator going around.

MMM is a certain of radio. Why the **** would you listen to it if you don't like the style. Ricciuto is the leased biased of any former player by a long way

A good commentator would do the opposite of what Bruce did with Franklin's goal tonight. Before he'd even kicked it he'd stopped calling what was actually happening and started predicting what might happen, comparing it to another goal, then when Franklin had kicked it made it about himself and Dennis.

Way to ruin it, you ruiner.
