After 20 years they can't call a team a different name? Stubborn old fuddy duddies resistant to change, is more like it.
If you can remain resistant to change for that long, the idea you're resisting against must be a fairly poor one that's easy to resist against?

The name is shit, and you chucked away your identity to chase a pot of gold you well a truly should have realised by now. Given keys to half of the city and still poor and small.

Not necessarily.

Regardless of the motivations, success or lack there of, it's been 20 years and it is the name of a footy club. Hardly worth the effort of sticking with Footscray.

Why would a non dogs fan even care so much as to bother?

I think I'll revert to calling Melbourne the Fuchsias, as it suits them better...

They were also gifted Ballarat which is as much western Victoria as I am Ron Jeremy.

One rule I'd love to see the AFL implement is to ban the freaking man bun!

It's an awful hairstyle!

Every man over 30 would agree.

Do the ladies like man buns?

Even North Melbourne woke up to the fact that they made a mistake.

Non-Western fans don't really care, it's you who seems to care about being called Footscray, a name which makes far more sense.

Male, 30. Don't really get the hate/criticism.

It's simply a way of keeping longer hair out of your face. Fairly practical when you're playing sport.

Hey, Brodie, I hope Buckley drops you until you get a proper haircut.

Again, whether a mistake was made or not, is an opinion that each individual is welcome to hold. That is not the issue.

Continuing to dig your heals in over a rival clubs name, obviously exhibits some level of care, or pettiness. Otherwise, why bother?

People who think that haircuts, or the colour of someone's boots, or short or long sleeves, affect how someone plays, or is a comment on their commitment, "hardness", or masculinity, are just complete idiots who need to stay in the 1950s.

Yep. Same as those who think a white uniform is somehow weaker

So, that's what I said, is it?

Symbolism around being team orientated is relevant.

The Aker handstand and the Mark Williams shotgun goal celebration come to mind.

Garish hair might not intrinsically impact performance, but many times in the past it has been symbolic of an individual selfish mindset impacting the performance of a team.

Depends on the circumstances.

Or it could just be a symbol of them being young with a full head of hair, chosing to grow it out just because they can.

It's a rubbish idea and that's why people persist with Footscray.
It's a national comp. Footscray to me is a place that is highly likely, but not inevitably, somewhere in or about Melbourne. At least Western implies it's West, possibly of the Pacific? Not this far West but, I suspect I would have noticed if they were here.
