When did you last use cash?

If I had a small cash revenue stream through, I'd use cash a lot more for incidental expenses, obvs.

In the middle of a loan application so trying to keep my bank statements tidy as possible. Pay goes in, bills and online purchases come out, and a sum of cash to get me through everything else.

I may be missing something. This sum of cash comes from 'elsewhere'?

I'm not sure it's relevant to how most people run their affairs.

Used cash once this year.

Had to get a document photocopied. Since WFH no access to a photocopier, don't print at home either. Went to newsagent the chick behind the counter scoffed at me getting two copies done on card for 40 cents.

Luckily had a 50 cent coin in wallet.

I love tap and go. I find it easier to track expenditure than using cash.

The sum comes from the bank. Just rather one withdrawal out than dozens of minor purchases for things.

Aside from that time i snorted a line off that hookers butt, my youngest school tuckshop was still cash up to last year. Now its online which is great.

my lawnmower man prefers cash but doesn’t die in a ditch if i ask him if i can bank transfer it

Note to future self

You'll have shell companies charging $2000 for a plumber to go out and change a washer in a tap.

at least that will be taxable

Someone owed me $17 last week, and then I used that cash to fill up on Thursday. Also had to bolt down urgently to the pharmacy (Sat just before noon cob) for someone else the week before with a provided banknote.

Also earlier in the year in February I attempted to deposit cash into a bank atm, but not many of them support that nowadays, depending on who you are with and where. Some relatives still do the birthday card with dough thing as well.

It comes in handy. On occasion it feels swell to use it knowing it won't flash up on bank statement or the like.

Back in 2012 I was already joking about the next generation not knowing what to do with cash. EFTPOS seemed to be already dominant by then, banks were already places you'd seldom enter. Occasionally there is a cash-only small business store (bakery, drycleaners, antique shop, etc.), or stores that only use EFTPOS if you spend a certain amount, so handy to have cash on you or be near an atm or just be flexibly prepared if that is the case.

Me at 18: Go to the ATM, get some cash out, go to the pub which was cash only, buy a bunch of pints and end up with pockets full of shrapnel, make sure I had enough for a kebab, queue up for a taxi and pay for that with notes then end up with more change.

18 year olds now: Uber, Ubereats, Apple pay... when they do socialise they just sit around on their phones the whole time too!

Every time I've been overseas recently I have bought foreign currency - 'just in case'. Each time I've brought most of it home and transferred it back into Aussie dollars at a loss of maybe $50 to $100 by the time charges and currency spreads are included.

I've done the same, except I'm paranoid about losing my card or having it eaten by a machine while overseas. So I use cash unless eftpos is the obvious choice (electronics store buying a local phone charger etc). Foreign transaction fees are criminal, unless you've got an ING account and they waive the fees. Last couple of days is about spending the rest and going home with just a few leftovers.

Surprised to see ANZ ATMs in various places in Vietnam. Had a shit limit of something like VND2,000,000 which was $100 at the time.

Bought a burek from the Balkan/Turkish bakery. Cost $5.50 and I only had notes. Lady didn't want to give me $4.50 in coins, I didn't want $4.50 in coins. Next time I will remember to take some change.

Whatever happened to the "I'll drop 50c in next time I'm in" and following through with it?

My most recent trip, I got one of those travel cards that you can load up with different currencies. They're Visa, and you get 2 cards with different numbers in case you lose/have one pinched.

Ended up cancelling the trip so no idea whether they would be good or a load of shite in practice.
As I was transiting through Vancouver, it made it easier to put some Canadienne pounds on it to cover incidental poutine and Molson purchases in the airport.

Citibank is a debit card (theres a few others that are fee free too)
and its free to get we have 2 incase we lose one and you get an SMS everytime you/the pickpocket use it
I have about $20 in it now
When I go travelling I load it up
If you need more you transfer some more from your real bank account online
It costs nothing to get the local currency from their ATMs and the exchange rates are pretty good too

First time I went I had cash sitting in the room safe (not really safe) and when I needed more I used my Australian ATM card and paid $10/$20 or 5% and got a shit exchange rate every time I used it

weekend as the cafe establishment was adding a card surcharge

Don't get me ****ing started on surcharges... a certain petrol station that shall be unnamed (yes you arseh*le Caltex service centre just south of Seymour) added a 50c surcharge for me using my debit card to buy $50 petrol. Went back in and spazzed out at the campaigner behind the counter (50ish, acted as if he owned the place, so it was a fair assumption he did), then he moved the rack of lollies to show the miniature "50c transaction fee added" sign hidden behind it.

Last time I've ever been there, it's fun driving from Seymour to Epping with the fuel light on the whole way... but **** 'em. There's a principle involved.
