Interesting comments to day in the US by Dr Fauci, :

Football also gives the virus ideal conditions to spread, said Fauci. “If people are in such close contact as football players are on every single play, then that’s the perfect set up for spreading,” he said. “I would think that if there is an infected football player on the field – a middle linebacker, a tackle, whoever it is it – as soon as they hit the next guy, the chances are that they will be shedding virus all over that person.”

ALSO THIS INTERESTING CONVERSATION:
Anthony Fauci's testimony before a congressional committee started as a genteel affair, with senators treating him as a long-serving public health official whose advice carries considerable authority and expertise.

Then Senator Rand Paul spoke.

When it comes to the coronavirus, the Republican from Kentucky said, public health experts had made "wrong prediction after wrong prediction after wrong prediction".

"As much as I respect you, Dr Fauci," he continued, "I don't think you're the end-all, I don't think you're the one person that gets to make a decision."

Mr Paul went on to assert that "outside of New England", the virus has followed a "relatively benign course". He told Fauci that schools, which have been closed across the US since mid-March, should be reopened as soon as possible.

Mr Paul was giving voice to a growing sentiment among the conservative base that Dr Fauci does not have the nation's - or the president's - best interests in mind.

Crowds of anti-lockdown activists in several states have chanted "fire Fauci", and the director has required special protection after receiving death threats. They, like Mr Paul, have dismissed the spread of the virus beyond the current coastal hotspots, even though data indicates cases are spiking in some areas in the interior of the US.

It's evidence of a growing political divide within the nation over how to respond to the virus and how, and when, to begin easing from existing state-ordered mitigation efforts.

Dr Fauci, for his part, responded coolly.

"I have never made myself out to be the end-all and only voice of this," he told Mr Paul. "I'm a scientist, a physician, and a public health official."

He added that there is still much that is not known about the virus, and warned not to be "cavalier" about the threat to children, given new evidence that they may not be "completely immune to the deleterious effects" of the virus.

Dr Paul, a practising physician, was himself diagnosed with the coronavirus last month and received significant criticism for continuing to work in the Senate after being exposed but before he received his positive diagnosis.

I’m worried sick the campaigners won’t let spectators back for yonks, it’s an absolute crock but consistent with this bludgeon lockdown approach where anything and everything causes transmissions rather than doing some simple risk assessments When will these idiots get it that there’s a fair difference from eating in a cruise ship buffet to going to the footy. There was no reported outbreak at t20 final , that should be all the evidence the afl and govt need and believe me the virus was around then in March

Relax, Sam. You can play golf now.

There will be a second wave, far worse than the first. Bookmark it for July.

No there won’t unless we re beset with cruise ships and umpteen inbound international flights . That was the catalysts for the first wave , it’s just Like smothering a fire , you put out the ignition source first ,,,read my lips there won’t be a bloody second wave

Better to be worried sick than to be actually sick with Covid. The time is not right to have big crowds gathering. Is football with crowds worth risking even one persons death? Football with no crowds is sh#t and I am hanging out waiting for the time I can get back to the G. I hate the thought we could be in a GF and I won't be there (no spectators) but we have to be cautious and if necessary, over cautious. Possibly when spectators are first allowed back wearing a mask maybe mandatory. Chill out life is more important than football.

It's getting more and more difficult. SA medico won't let Crows and Port travel without 14 return quarantines upon return. WA looking to hub it up on the Goldy. SA boys can't contact train in SA until 3 days before first game if they stay (Crows play bruise free anyway) - looking like a push back date already. Answers are looking harder then the questions. Get the game going with the Vic teams......!

The SA teams will just have to go to a different state Asap to train. Unless something changes WA and SA will probably ease restrictions around July so it’s only a month or 2 away for those teams. Footy will still be back in mid june

I accept your point and I get a sense the sentiment against crowds is that strong that they’re unlikely this year at all for any sport ,,,I just cant believe that they couldn’t still manage the risk with a limited crowd say somewhere between 25-50% capacity
